Reading this book was like talking with your best girlfriend. I found it very encouraging and the advice to be most helpful.
It was a quick and enjoyable read.
I had the privilege to read an advance readers copy of this book (thanks Waterbrook & Multnomah!) and it is absolutely WONDERFUL!
Jordan Lee Dooley is an inspiring young Christian woman, and her book inspires women - of all ages, of all walks of life, in all seasons of life - to live their life in full ownership of who each one of us is made to be. "Own Your Everyday" reads as if you are having a conversation with a sweet soul-sister of a friend. She encourages us to look deeply at our own lives and dig out and address insecurities, expectations, and the pressure to prove. Jordan shares honest, compelling anecdotes from her life and explores other ways these three main issues might manifest themselves now or in the future. With empathy, guidance, and practical action steps, Jordan helps us address imposter syndrome, disappointment, shame, comparison, perfectionism, and distraction. We are called, Jordan declares, to redefine a successful life on our own terms and in as many unique ways are we are all born and gifted to live. Jordan gives us permission to be our individual selves and break free from societal, cultural, or familial expectations we all bear at one point or another in our lives. This book is for you if you are a young woman, a young-at-heart woman, raising a young woman, working with a young woman, or even just know one. Happy reading! This one is worth it!
Ladies, listen up! No matter what season you are in life, please, do me a favor, and pick this book up for a quick read! Jordan is full of so much positivity and encouragement. It’s easy to fall in love with this book from the very first chapter. She shares some of her fondest memories and deepest desires. It also makes her so relatable.
Jordan teaches us that we all have a purpose, life can be messy, and it’s okay to not be perfect. We aren’t handed the life we dream of, we must work hard for it!
This book is beautifully written. I couldn’t stop highlighting quotes!!
I received an advanced copy for review purposes and consider it a true blessing!
This book has been SUCH A BLESSING to me!!!
I am SO grateful for being accepted to be a part of this launch team, & even more so to have been chosen as 1 of only 500 to receive an Advanced Reader Copy courtesy of WaterBrook & Multnomah.
This will definitely be a book that I will be reading again & again!!!
LADIES, I don’t care what stage of life you are in, you NEED to read this book!!!
“Own Your Everyday: Overcome the Pressure to Prove and Show Up for What You Were Made to Do” by Jordan Lee Dooley has plenty of practical & applicable advice for living your best life no matter what season you are currently in.
I cannot state enough that I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!
(I already ordered 2 extra because I want to bless others with this blessing of a book)
Own Your Everyday reached inside my heart, mind, and experiences to make me feel seen by Jordan. Some of the experiences were literally play-by-play my own. I knew Jordan was going to give me a new goal or perspective for my life from listening to her podcast and following her on social media. What I didn't expect, however, was just how motivated or alive I would feel after reading Own Your Everyday. I am excited to put Jordan's words into action in my life. I am going to recommend this book to every woman I know, no matter their age or where they are in life.
I'll admit, when Jordan said she was going to be releasing a book "that would be for everybody" I was a bit skeptical and honestly a little bit concerned because I thought she would end up compromising the Gospel/biblical approach to life in favor of appealing to secular audiences.
THANKFULLY Jordan did not do this. She was clear in making sure the reader understood that her purpose is not tied to a specific career path, married life, etc but rather to HOW she lives her life. This includes cultivating relationships with others around her right where she's at, battling our pride and the need to be better than other people just for our own glory, trying things and being okay with failing knowing that it in no way thwarts God's plan for her life, taking that first step, and knowing that her identity is in no way tied to what she does BUT in who God says she is.
I also liked how Jordan had practical steps in almost every chapter that gave the reader some actionable ways in which she could carry out the truths Jordan spoke about.
Although I know this book was not marketed strictly towards Christians, I do wish Jordan had done a better job at presenting the Gospel and salvation a bit clearer than she does on the part titled "The Door I Never Opened". I wish she had just spelled it out a bit more i.e. talked about SIN and how that distorts the view of ourselves and leads to our pride, need to prove ourselves to people, and wanting to do everything out of our own strength. This section could have been presented better than it was but honestly, apart from that, I would recommend this book.
I also wish she had clearly spelled out that our purpose in life is to glorify God with our lives. I believe Jordan didn't do that because she's trying to appeal to secular audiences as well.
I am thankful for Jordan's ministry because I got to join The Sisterhood when it was still in its early phases and I've met some wonderful women who love the Lord and most importantly, His Word. I am happy to go out there and Own My Everyday by living intentionally because of my identity in Christ and making sure I'm valuing others above myself and doing everything as unto the Lord.
In exchange for my honest review, I received an advanced reader copy from WaterBrook and Multnomah.
In "Own Your Everyday", Jordan Lee Dooley makes the case for focusing on the now and the current role that you are playing -whether college student, newly-wed or new mama. Through her everyday anecdotes, she provides teachable moments on overcoming perfectionism, insecurity, loss and identity. One of my favourite lines from the book is "..Embracing your reality by starting where you are". This was a gentle reminder that we can get overwhelmed by decisions and not know where to start but taking the next few steps in faith is sometimes all we need,
Her conversational style will be welcomed by readers especially for long-term listeners. I was personally drawn in by the beautiful cover (C.mon she is a beautiful person both in and out) and all the Instagram buzz around this book. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book when in need of a bear hug from a big sister.
Having watched a few of the author's YouTube videos before, and been encouraged by her passion and vulnerability, I was excited at the chance to read and review her debut book. But . . . to be honest, I was a bit disappointed. The book wasn't bad, I just didn't find it that great. It was easy to read, but it also felt a bit shallow. Like things I'd heard over and over again. And especially... like the book was missing an emphasis on the whole point of purpose. The author shared a lot of tips for how to find and pursue your purpose and what lies to fight... but she didn't talk a whole lot about what in the world our core purpose actually is: to glorify God and be in relationship with Him. She briefly touched those things but didn't talk a lot about how they are our core purpose.
Some other random thoughts:
-The chapters were short and readable, with a nice amount of personal stories
-The book's subtitle wording drives me crazy . . . please tell me I'm not the only one who sees it
-I actually liked the excessive use of alliteration throughout the book XD
-This book shares a lot of practical tips... while on the other hand, there were moments when I wished for more. The author would say "do this great thing" or "build this beneficial discipline!" without explaining, practically, *how* to do it
-I did not agree with all of the theology
Overall, this book wasn't bad. It did provide some food for thought. But it wasn't great, and I honestly got a little bored once I realized it wasn't going to go very deep theologically.
Note: I received a copy of this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts ate my own.
I want to start out by saying, I am not huge on self-help books. I love more personal development type books, not where the author tries to “fix” everyone. So whenever I read a book like this, it falls into one of these categories for me. I have followed the author on social media for a few years & love her content. She is very real, raw and inspiring. So I had high expectations for this book. She did not disappoint y’all. This book is amazing!!! It doesn’t feel like she is standing at a pulpit preaching to you. It feels as though Jordan is your friend & you are having coffee together. I found so many tangible tools in this book to carry into my every day life. Thank you Jordan for this book! It will inspire many, many women out there. This book is out 5/14.
Thank you to Netgalley & the publisher for this advanced readers copy.
This book was received as an ARC from WaterBrook & Multnomah - WaterBrook in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
A lot of our young teenage readers at the library are familiar with Jordan and her podcast and were highly anticipating the release of this book. The format and the language used in this book connects with that particular audience and I know they will develop a personal relationship with Jordan with her sense of sharing and her personality. When I was reading it, I felt like I knew her and that we are friends and I knew her personal struggles throughout key parts of her life. I really think this book will succeed with the teen audiences and who knows maybe even change some lives too.
We will consider adding this title to our biography/self-help section of our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I loved this book. Real everyday advice to live your life and not let it pass you by when things aren't going how we planned. Huge thank you to Waterbrook & Multnomah for my advanced reader copy.
Own Your Everyday is such a wonderful book and I truly enjoyed reading it.
It is like getting to sit down to a cup of coffee with Jordan Lee Dooley herself and discuss life.
She reminds us that we are more than what we feel we are not,
we are everything that the Lord made us to be and He has a plan for our lives.
She reminds us to "Own Our Everyday"
even on the days that it just seems like one big mess - because even the little moments...
they matter.
If you are looking for a great pep-talk and a "You can do this!" -
I highly recommend this book!
I really loved the feeling of this book - helpful without being preachy. Good, implementable ideas to aid in our search for purpose and identity. I will be recommending to many friends I know struggling with “imposter syndrome“.
When I saw the cover of this book, I said to myself, I want to smile like that. Jordan has written a sweet book that reads like a conversation with a dear friend. It is like she is telling you her deepest secrets to help you know you are not alone in your feelings. She writes about insecurities and limiting beliefs that she had to overcome to get that radiant smile. This is the book I wish my younger self had picked up out of college.
I finished the book last night. All day long I have contemplated how to comment on this group page.
When I was first chosen for this team, I really thought I was chosen by mistake. I read all of the introductions on this page and everyone was my boys' ages. But then, God.
I picked up my Kindle and started reading and felt as if Jordan wrote the book just for me. It will be a book I read over and over and over again. I will buy copies and pass them out to ladies in my community.
I have lost my purpose the past year or so. My 46 year old sister-in-law passed away unexpectantly last summer, leaving behind a husband and 3 teenagers. Then my oldest son suddenly got married and moved out after 23 years at home. My youngest son went back to college. My husband started commuting to work 68 miles one way. I got two new principals as bosses at my elementary school. With all of this, I think I have kind of disconnected from everything and everyone. I have interacted just enough to get things done and keep up with life.
God has used this book to tell me to get back to life. He still has a purpose for me. There are still people out there that God can use me to reach.
Thank you, Jordan, for letting God use you to give a message to me and so many others.
There are some books that we do not want to end, and “Own Your Everyday” was one of those books for me! At first, I was thinking that maybe this book was more geared towards younger readers: teens and college students who were still figuring out which direction that they want their lives to go in. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could really connect to many parts of this book, and I found plenty of truths that applied to my life as a 32 year old mama with an established career.
Reading this book felt a lot like having a conversation with a dear friend. Jordan writes in a very real and down to earth way, and her words were very encouraging to women in many different stages of life. My main take away from the book was to not just sit around and wait for the perfect circumstances, but go out into the world and live a life of purpose NOW. Do not be a perfectionist who thinks you are a failure if life does not go a certain way. Instead, live a life where your purpose is to love others well, and let any failures instead become a learning experience.
Some quotes that stood out to me from the book include:
“You cannot live your purpose if you if you are so preoccupied with with trying to make it look like someone else’s.”
“Stop waiting for someday or one day to be more disciplined, take a tiny step toward your dream, or try new things. You’ll get stuck living for one day. Start right here, in your everyday. You never know what amazing things it could bring.”
“You won’t even be happy when you get to where you’re going if you don’t learn to love your imperfect, everyday life now.”
“I hope you do big things and go after your wildest dreams. But guess what? You cannot do the big, cool, extraordinary things until you learn to show up for the not so cool, everyday things. There is no way around that.”
I would recommend this to any woman from high school age on up who feels that this message resonates with them. I was blessed to receive an advanced reader’s copy of this book from the publisher, Waterbrook and Multnomah, in exchange for my honest review.
I just finished an advanced copy of this amazing book, it is such a fun and impactful read.
Jordan is so honest and spoke straight to my heart. I loved how it was written... Not because it was perfect English, but because it read like a conversation, as if Jordan was sitting with me and speaking to me directly.
But what I loved most about this book is that it is full of practical advice. Jordan speaks about topics that I think every woman can relate to and shares her own stories, and actually gives tips we can implement into our day to day lives to live out the truths she is sharing.
I do think this is a must read for every woman out there.
What are your priorities? Are they plainly evident to others by the way you live your life? As you answer these questions and examine your life, the author will lead you down a path to own your everyday.
How many of us waste time, energy and emotions on comparing? Wouldn’t it be so much better to spend our time, energy and emotions on being more compassionate, getting connected and helping to create community? The author offers helpful and practical advice as to how to accomplish these important things.
I loved reading about the friendship between Jordan and Mel. They became fast friends and were able to be vulnerable with each other. They instantly enjoyed each other’s company while laughing and spending time together. Close friendships are gifts from God and every woman needs at least one.
Each of us needs at least one person, in our corner, who dares us to dream. Now that I have read this book, I will be looking for others to encourage and I will dare them to dream.
This book is loaded with good advice, but my personal favorite is to develop an attitude of gratitude. It’s easy to be grateful for the good things in life, but we also need to be grateful for the disappointments and setbacks. Our difficult experiences can be valuable lessons and redirect us to something even better than what we were originally hoping for.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Waterbrook & Multnomah through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Holy moly! This book got straight to the heart of things. It really forced me to look at my own motivation for what I do and where I struggle with my sense of purpose. If you want to begin peeling back the layers of insecurities in your own life, then this is the book for you. You don't have to be perfect or perform for everyone. You just have to be clear in your "why" and let that carry through in your life. That will guide everything you do and help you fulfill your purpose. Doesn't mean you have to have it all figured out! But this will give you a good start in overcoming some of the things that often hold you back.
I really enjoyed this book! I’ve been following Jordan on social media for a few years now, and have always found her writing style very accessible and realistic.
When I first started this book, I was concerned it was going to be a very fluffy self-help book with a lot of platitudes but not a lot of actionable content. I was proven wrong pretty much immediately. Jordan has listed tactical steps to take to address things like perfectionism, uncertainty, and insecurity, which I really appreciate. I highlighted a ton of text to refer back to later, and am already brainstorming ways I can apply her tips.
I think the book gets stronger about 25% of the way through, so I encourage you to stick with it through the introduction and really get to the meat of her advice.
One comment, though - can writers please stop referring to their readers as “sister”?! 😅
All in all, I really liked this book and would recommend it.
