Kara Valari is the daughter of a celebrity family known for filmmaking. Maximus Kane is a professor of literature at a local university. Kara signs up for Maximus’ class her senior year and their chemistry is undeniable. The two can’t figure out why they’re drawn to each other and mythical, strange occurrences keep popping up when the two spend time together.

I was pleasantly surprised with this novel. I didn’t realize it was the first in a series so it ends with a cliffhanger. Kara knows about her supernatural powers and her duty as the daughter of a demon. Maximus Kane knows nothing about his origins and cannot explain his otherworldly strength and healing. There is clearly a big backstory that the reader is hinted at, but for someone who is curious about his past, Maximus asks very few questions. I think both of their “kinds” could have been explored more, but I’m sure it’s addressed later in the series. I loved the chemistry between Kara and Maximus and I enjoyed that their relationship wasn’t plagued with nonstop “forbidden student/professor” commentary. There could have been more steam, but at least there were a few intimate moments. I hope Maximus’ friend Dr. North gets a book one day!

I liked the role reversal of the characters. Typically the girl is the person who is introduced to the fantasy world but this time it’s the guy. Plus there’s an age gap and taboo romance between a professor and his student.
For a shorter fantasy romance I think the author did a good job of establishing the world and characters. It should be interesting to see what happens next!
