Well-written, comprehensive nonfiction about forest fires. In a couple instances, illustrations accompanying text donโ€™t do it justice. See the spread when Jacky as a seed in scorched earth is growing over the course of all of the seasonsโ€”I was confused and thought that Jacky was now multiple Jackies momentarily.

Children's Nonfiction | Ages 4-7
Well-known CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe has collaborated with illustrator Julie McLaughlin to help young readers understand more about the fire cycle and the impact of climate change. Jacky the pine cone is in the forest with his friends, and watches as a forest fire threatens the forest and the people who live nearby, and sees fire fighters tackle the flames. We also learn that for some living creatures, fire is key to the life cycle. Lots of information and appealing imagery - I did find the text a bit small; I love text that is emotive and this is rather flat. My thanks to Orca Books for the digital reading copy provided in exchange for my honest review.

I love Jack pines and I loved this story. My kids and I enjoy listening to Parks Canada talk about wildfires (especially the Keno wildfire of 2017 in Alberta). This book is another great resource for us to read as we learn more about how Fires hurt and help the environment.

This was an adorable introduction to the importance of wildfires to forests, while also recognizing climate change has created a scenario in which more drastic and devastating wildfires occur more frequently with sometimes devastating results. Pictures were bright and colorful. This would be a good choice for readers that are interested in weather, forestry and other related scientific topics.

I thought the Little Pine Cone was a decent read but a bit too fact based and depressing for little ones

This is a Children's Book that I read to my twin boys. I have to start off by saying this book had so much great information in it, and I also learned a lot of things I did not know about. I really loved reading this book to my boys, and I also loved learning more about the type of Pine Trees in this book. I really loved the characters in this book, and my boys loved seeing how the characters changed. Great Children's book and I can see this book being used in a science class. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A story about a little pinecone who is trying to survive a wildfire. There is lots of information about what happens during a wildfire and the many jobs that there are. Very informative.

Little Pine Cone was packed with information on why fire is actually a key component to a healthy forest. I really liked how the author stressed that although fires can be dangerous there are ways to be prepared for them and that they are essential for pine trees to survive. This book is a great way to educate our children about forest fires. I think that children will enjoy the illustrations and learn quite a bit as well.

As residents of the Pacific Northwest where wildfires occur frequently, we found this book to be very informative and relatable. While we understood the dynamic of wildfires, we had no idea how the trees were effected, especially the Jack Pine. Jacky's story was interesting and we really enjoyed seeing her transformation at the end. The illustrations were vibrant and helped bring the story to life.

This is a really cute, educational book presented in a way that will draw children in and keep their attention - while learning something new! The labeling of the animals is helpful and information. My three year old really enjoyed this. He loves the pictures! I feel that this book had many different elements you could pull from when teaching different lessons!

This is an educational children's book about how fires are necessary for helping pine cones release their seeds. I will suggest this for my library. It is for younger readers. I did learn some interesting information I hadn't been aware of before.

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I loved how this book labeled all the animals and birds, which my class would love because they also want to learn about animals . It also had great facts that can be shared for science as well as how a forest regrows after a fire. The changing seasons in the story would be great for learning about seasons. The story is a great learning tool that can be used in many areas and the pictures are adorable.

This is an educational book written by Johanna Wagstaffe, a Meteorologist, about the life cycle of forest fires and how they affect the ecosystem of the forest. The life cycle of the Jack pine cone is used to illustrate the concept of forest fires in this book in a way that children will understand.

Many of us grow up thinking that all forest fires are the result of an accident (remember Smokey the Bear?), when in fact many such fires are started on purpose and managed for our climate to survive and thrive. However, during the warm seasons, firefighters and many other safety workers keep an eye out for fires when the conditions are right. It only takes three things to start a forest fire: fuel, oxygen, and heat; all of which are in high availability in the hot seasons.

The cheerful and vibrant illustrations in this book are adorable and educational. They blend with the scientific story to educate children about forest fire concepts without making the topic appear frightening. The target age group for this book is 6-8-year-olds.

This book is very detailed and explains all the necessary players of importance in the forest fire life cycle. It would be an excellent tool to be used in a science-based module in an elementary classroom. I enjoyed this book and learned a lot about wildfires. I believe that children will enjoy it as well.

I appreciate the โ€œfact pageโ€ that explains how our changing climate affects our forest fires, thus possibly making them more dangerous year by year. A glossary section follows the fact page and defines important words.

I want to thank Author Johanna Wagstaffe, Illustrator Julie McLaughlin, Orca Book Publishers, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this Advanced Readerโ€™s Copy. This is a voluntary review, and all comments and opinions are entirely my own.

This book deals with the causes of forest fires and ecosystems in an accessible way for ages 6-8. The artwork was vibrant and bright. The text is rather small, though I think the book does a good job of getting the important messages across without becoming too verbose. I think the book cover art doesn't adequately match the topic of the book and thus some readers may not realize they are picking up a book about wildfires if they do not read the subtitle.

This book tells the story of a pine cone who is observing a forest fire. The pine cone explains that forest fires are natural and necessary, and that animals are able to escape and survive. He also explains that sometimes fires get out of hand and talks about the necessary safety measures people may make such as clearing dry leaves from their yard and even evacuating. While this is a fiction story about a pinecone, it is filled with important information about animals, plants and fire. I would recommend this book to families and teachers of children in the 4-10 age range, especially for children who are concerned about or interested in forest fires. As a grade 3 teacher I could definitely see this book in my classroom library and being used for lessons on animals and habitats, natural disasters and fire safety. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this awesome book!

Little Pine Cone is a fun yet informative children's book. The illustrations are filled with beautiful colors as well as labels for all science minds!

We follow a story about Little Jacky, a pine cone who lives in the woods with different animal friends. This follows Little Jacky's scary adventure as a forest fire breaks out.

This story captures perseverance and the growth life cycle, and the real threat of climate changes in our environment. Little Pine Cone is for any child interested in botany and learning more about nature and wildlife.

My students would love this story as I've observed that children have a deep appreciation for all nature in my years of being a teacher. I would like to add this story as part of my collection and curriculum.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an e-arc copy in exchange for an honest review.

Little Pine Cone has beautiful illustrations and captivating storytelling. It masterfully explains the causes and effects of wildfires on people, animals, and the environment. Being that millions of North American kids live in areas where wildfires warning and alerts are a daily occurrence, this picture book would make a perfect addition to every classroom/school library. It also hits many of the NGSS and LA standards.
