Somewhat slow burn but a fun read for spooky season. if you like witchy books, you should definitly check this one out. Sadly, it's another book I read postpartum and most of the details have left my brain. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy in exchange for my honest review. 3.5 stars.

I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book. This was an outstanding debut novel for Cass Kay. I am a sucker for a witch story and this one was so special and incredible. Vienna has to go home to Salem for her mother’s burial 10 years after she left. Faced with the decision of what to do with the house she was left and feeling very unwelcome by the covens, Vienna is forced to make some hard decisions about her future while also trying to solve a mystery from her past that hit way too close to home. Did I mention the demon? Or the ghosts? This story has it all and I’m so excited to learn what comes next in the series.

Legacy Witches is an amazing dark urban fantasy/magical realism that is utterly perfect for fans of dark witches, coven politics, found family, small town antics, and incredibly researched details that bring the witchy world to life.

This is the PERFECT book to read for the coming spooky season. Would definetly recommend it to everyone. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I'm torn on this book because I wanted to love it so much but I was a little let down. Witches and a murder mystery is something that is right up my spooky, thriller-loving alley, but there were some issues that took away from that for me. I really did not like the main character Vienna that much. Her attitude and childishness bothered me as this is an adult novel. Had it been NA or YA I would have been more forgiving of her as a main character but she was just not my style at all. While yes her mother was not a great person she saved her from her uncle and yet Vienna still harps on her mother like she was a horrendous monster when she wasn't. I actually enjoyed Sandeen more than I did Vienna and I don't think you should like secondary characters more than the mains, just my opinion.

I felt like the drama with the other witches could have been less of a focus in this book and it would have made it much better for me. I think my favorite part was the big fight scene at the end of the book and was probably the main reason I rated this as highly as I did. I will be reading more from Cass Kay in the future as I want to give her another chance and think she has some great ideas based off this book.

This was hauntingly enchanting, there were times where things dragged on but the atmosphere was so magical. This is a perfect fall/halloween read.

I devoured this book. The Legacy Witches had my full attention, the storylines were gripping, anything involving witches will instantly gain my attention and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy

If I could give this 10 stars I would. Hands down the best book I’ve read this year.

I’m all about witch stories but sometimes they get a little stale. This one was 100% FRESH.

Vienna, our main character, is back in her hometown of Salem after running away from her legacy there 10 years prior. She returns for her mothers burial only to find absolutely nothing has changed. Shunned by the other covens and unsure of what she wants to do with the family familiar she faces some hard decisions.

Jam-packed with curses, hoodoo, hexing and some seriously snarky witches this book literally has it all if you’re a fan of the witchy genre!

This was an amazing debut novel and I can not wait for the second book!

This was okay, it just wasn't for me. It was incredibly hard to get into at the start - literally, it felt as if the text and therefore the author was trying to keep you out. While this may have been a deliberate choice to echo the reluctant way the demonic house allows the MC in, it didn't feel deliberate. It felt as if the author didn't really know how to start. Either way, that was not a fun way to start reading a book.

Everything is a really gross mess and there's little to no contrast. Let me elaborate: the possessed house (which contains the family's familiar) is literally filthy, full of animal parts in jars and even some human remains. It reeks of stale garlic which gets into everything. And this is a house that's been lived in recently, not one that's stood derelict. The house resists being cleaned or tidied which could have been funny but was not presented in an amusing way. And then there's the MC who is just as much of a mess as the house. There is very little of her character to begin with other than she can see ghosts and it's messing with her, she doesn't want to be involved, she can't manage her finances or even wear clean clothes and she clumsy. I tried and tried to engage with her but I guess we just don't click.

This book has some great concepts, even if I'd categorise it more as dark contemporary fantasy rather than urban fantasy. I love the whole 'going back to a home you fled from trope'. I love sentient buildings. I even like the idea of witches legacies being bequeathed from person to person. But I really don't like this portrayal of witches (literal eye of newt, murdering with magic, living in filth etc). I think we've had so many of the 'devil worshipping' witch depictions in fiction, that I am just weary of it, so unfortunately that was against the book from the start. To have yet another one with no contrasting 'light' witches was annoying.

Basically, I wanted to like this but found the way the story was told off-putting and started being hyper critical of the story. Some of that is definitely on me.

THANK YOU TO NETGALLEY FOR AN ARC OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW!

🌟🌟🌟🌟

Vianna comes from a long line of witches, and she can also see ghosts. This ability has taken a toll on her character where she isn't sure how much longer she can remain sane. There is a lot of growth that Vianna needed to do in this book to be able to accept her family and her friendship with Dee. This book takes a few chapters to get into but once you start you can't stop until you are finished reading this book. This was such a unique book. I would recommend it.

Woah. This book. It’s a ride, but a slow burn ride.

I had a hard time getting into it because the pacing was slow at the beginning, However, this one is dark and alluring with witches that have sass.

I will definitely be picking up the second one.

This was a fun read! I love witches, spooky houses and all things supernatural!
The beginning was slow going and took some time to get into the book. All in all a decent debut. I will definitely be checking out the next one.
If you love witches, mystery, and the supernatural this is for you!!

This book was similar to others but still one of a kind. Love that you got a bit of the past which explained why she steered clear of her hometown and the relationships with others, yet you get to experience her growing and coming into her own as not only a witch but as a woman. Even though it's got fantasy and some heavier subjects, it's still fun

I really enjoyed legacy witches. It had the perfect mix of witches, ghosts, hoodoo. I couldn't put the book down.

The characters were great. I loved Vianna and Dee's friendship.

Can't wait to read more by Cass Kay

Witches ✅ seeing ghosts ✅ running from your legacy to be dragged back in ✅ a demon familiar that is hosted by your house ✅ this book was absolutely fantastic. I loved the growth that the main character had in this, facing her fears and doing what she thought is right rather than easy. I can’t wait to read more! Also: there’s a trans rep in this book, and I’m pretty sure she’s my favorite character. She’s the bees knees.

Vianna ran from Salem and everything that came with being a Legacy Witch a decade ago. Her mother died, and she’s back to lay her to rest and get the estate figured out. Only the ghost of her childhood best friend is now residing in her bathroom. She vows to figure out what happened, and the dominoes start tipping, revealing an ugly underbelly of the Salem witches.

Legacy Witches is book #1 in the Legacy Witches series by Cass Kay.

Vianna Roots comes from a long line of murderous witches. She runs away but comes back when her mother dies. She plans to sell the house and go back to her life in Boston, but she wants to solve the disappearance of her friend Nancy.

I thought this started out a bit slow, but I’m happy I stuck with it. I love the setting of Salem. Vianna didn’t enjoy the ghosts, but I did. Grandma spoke her mind. I like Vianna and Dee and Shuck, the house. The dynamics of the covens was interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens next for the solitary witches and whether Vienna can do things the way she wants.

Thank you to the author, Dream the Dream, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Interesting start to a new urban fantasy series!

Admitedly, I wasn't a huge fan of the first part of this book. I had a bit of trouble understanding or seeing where the story was headed. I thought there was too much going on and the main mystery wasn't being properly addressed. Plus, something I'm not in favor of, info dumping.

But that perception changed when I reached the halfway mark of the book. Things became much more clearer, all of the characters had been introduced, their intentions were pretty clear and the plot finally clicked.

I appreciated the humor in this book. The protagonist, Vianna, has a unique way of cursing and I thought that was hilarious. Also, the way her character was written, made her quite relatable. Her life is basically in shambles but she pushes through, she does the right thing and ends up prevailing.

Oh, and her relationship with Dee was adorable. I loved seeing their friendship develop.

Another aspect worth noting is the witchcraft part. I hate it when authors trick readers into thinking certain themes or elements will appear on the book and they only cover them on a surface level. This was not the case. Witchcraft is present all throughout the book. It's relevant to the entire story and there are plenty of scenes where it is involved. Plus, I thought it was really well done without over complicating things.

Despite my initial experience with this book, I'm glad I kept on reading. I'm sure the next installment will be equally if not more fun than this one and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

After Vianna Roots' mother dies, she reluctantly inherits the family's haunted house, and her demon familiar. Wanting to clear the house and sell it as soon as possible for some much needed cash, life gets in the way when Vianna is forced to confront her past and future. This was a dark, gothic read with lots of violence and death. While it was initially a slower start, it really picked up and had an engaging conclusion.

This was a NetGalley review.
