Just as the Hallelujah aria causes one to have full emotion, so will this book. This is the first of the series. We get a brief introduction into each team member as well as info on the border situation between Texas and Mexico and some information on the bias and prejudice of some Border Patrolmen. This is an amazing series that I hope the author continues. It can be read as a standalone but you will be intrigued and want to read the rest of the series.

A really diverse novel. I can't imagine a US Marshall like Alex, though, and I didn't like that the solution was brought by a supernatural experience when the same thing could have happend naturally.

Suspense at the Mexican border with a lot of diverse ingredients
I was intrigued by the diverse crew of the investigative team and the setting at the Mexican-American border and picked up this first installment of newbie author BJ Taylor. The crew and the story didn‘t disappoint: esp. Alex, the gay shaman Marshal, and the insights (and insults) he brings into the narrative were refreshing. Gabe and Sam paled a bit and Cyn was mostly investigating elsewhere.
The writing flows well and the focus is very tightly on the investigation. I esp. liked the pinch of the shamanic element. I would have loved to have the story, the characters and the setting at the border more fleshed out. There is a lot of potential here and the author clearly can write (the editing though missed some mistakes), so please BJ Taylor elaborate a bit more and broaden the focus and this might well become one of my favorite series.

Thanks to the author and netgalley for the ARC. The review is written voluntarily.
