This book was interesting. I was invested and wanted to find out what happened, but there was a lot of jumping around. Between the three (four) different narrators and the jumping from the past to the present and each narrator's separate story, there was a lot to keep track of. It was easy to follow, but by the end, I still don't think I quite understood the whole motivation of everything.

You also have to read this with a large suspension of disbelief. There is a ton in this book that seems very out there. It makes for a fast-paced story, but also one that makes you truly doubt reality. Overall, it was good in that I wanted to keep reading, but jumbled and rushed at the end.

Have enjoyed other works by this author, but this one didn’t really work for me. An interesting story but not gripping.

Thank you Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press, Minotaur Books and Alex Finlay for free e-ARC in return of my honest review.

"What Have We Done" is a gripping and emotionally charged thriller that delves into the lives of three childhood friends who are brought back together by a series of chilling events. Jenna, Donnie, and Nico share a dark past marked by abuse and neglect at Savior House, a group home for parentless teens. When the home is shut down and the three friends are separated, they try to move on with their lives, but the trauma of their past continues to haunt them.

Alex Finlay masterfully crafts a narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats, blending elements of suspense, mystery, and psychological depth. The characters are vividly drawn, each grappling with their own demons and struggles as they navigate the dangerous territory of their shared past.

"What Have We Done" is not just a pulse-pounding thriller; it is also a poignant coming-of-age story that explores themes of trauma, friendship, and redemption. Finlay's writing is both evocative and gripping, drawing readers into a world where the past and present collide with devastating consequences.

Overall, "What Have We Done" is a riveting read that will keep you hooked from start to finish. Alex Finlay proves to be a formidable voice in the thriller genre, delivering a story that is as heart-wrenching as it is suspenseful. This novel is a must-read for fans of thrilling and immersive storytelling.

W hile I did not dislike Alex Finlay's What Have We Done, I wasn’t quite bowled over by it. But I am eager to read more from Alex Finlay in the future. I really hope he gives us another book featuring FBI Special Agent Sarah Keller (from The Night Shift and Every Last Fear).

I SO wanted to love this one! Every Last Fear is one of my favorite thrillers EVER but this one was very much a miss for me. I loved the premise but it lacked the punch I needed for it be an edge of my seat, omg wow read.
It had too much action and not enough suspense!

This is another great read by Alex Finlay. In What Have I Done, three friends who grew up in a home for parentless teens. The home ends up being a house of horrors for those living there and eventually closes down. Years later, an assassin is trying to kill the girls so back to Servant House they go. At times the story seemed a bit far fetched, but overall I enjoyed the story and it kept me guessing until the end. Although this is not a favorite book of mine from this author, it is worth reading if you enjoy his books. The characters were likable and the plot kept me guessing!

I had a hard time with this book. It's my own fault of course, because I just requested the book without even reading the synopsis. Had I read that I wouldn't have requested it. This isn't really my type of book, I like murder-y books but I don't enjoy reading action.

This one didn't work for me, but I thought it would have been a great movie.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE is a bingeable read. This play on the past coming into the future is done in a way that is entertaining as well as well-crafted. Finaly continues to deliver thrillers with all the right twists, turns, and reveals.

THIS. WAS. WILD. Right out of the gate we have a sniper and a chase and wow, this one was a roller coaster I could not put down! Highly recommend this one!

I like this author, so I enjoyed this one. But it was not as good as Every Last Fear. I found the characters to be interesting enough to stay engaged but I am sometimes angered by the fact that there’s something obvious being withheld from the reader. Either way, I liked this one and I’m not upset I read it. I’d definitely continue reading more from this author.

A stay-at-home mom with a past.
A has-been rock star with a habit.
A reality TV producer with a debt.
Three disparate lives.
One deadly secret.

The premise is interesting, but you'll have to suspend disbelief to enjoy this one from Finlay. I really enjoyed The Night Shift but this one fell short for me. Little character development and multiple POVs with too many characters to keep straight. Crazy assassins, unbelievable events & OTT violence and action.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley and St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

The past Finlay books have centered around families in crisis. This did as well, although a different type of family. It was dark and twisty, but I found myself only liking the stories of certain characters. Not all were likable or believable. That being said, Alex Finlay knows how to write an engaging story!

What Have We Done, Alex Finlay

What have I been waiting for? Break out the popcorn for this thriller and settle in for the night!

Honestly, I feel like slept on this thriller in my TBR pile for way too long. With Finlay set to release a new book in Spring 2024 I knew I wanted to read his 2023 release first.

It’s rare that I am able to read a book in day because - life! But I TORE through this book, pausing only to get take out because cooking would have consumed precious uninterrupted reading time. And, I do need to feed the kiddo’s!

This psychological cat and mouse thriller was fun and twisty. Even when you figured out what was going on, the story was so well written and FUN that it literally read itself.

If you have consumed all that Netflix has to offer and are looking for a binge, What Have We Done? Is a goodie.

Can’t wait to read the next one!!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and the author for my advanced copy!

If you’re looking for a thriller that feels like an action-packed, cinematic experience, What Have We Done definitely has those vibes. It’s a little over the top, but that’s what makes it fun. A group of adults are being targeted, and it turns out they all knew each other as teenagers in foster care, where something bad went down and they all did something about it together. The mystery about what happened back then unravels slowly, but there’s plenty of suspense in the present, too, as the gang gets back together to try to find out who’s coming after them — and why now, all these years later.

This book was okay. Not my favorite by this author. I felt like this one was really predictable and not as fun to read compared to his other books. I will read others by this author, but will not reread this one.

This book was a bit of a miss for me. It was descriptive and creative but required a lot of suspending belief and was quite confusing at times. The characters weren't very well developed and that made it hard to connect with or care what was happening with the characters. I wish we had gotten more of the backstory and more developed characters.

What Have We Done is very different from Alex Finlay’s previous books. The last Finlay book I read was more of a detective mystery but this one was a full-on action-packed thriller. The short chapters made it super easy to fly through and it was super entertaining!

In this fast-paced thriller by Alex Finlay, three people, once connected when they all lived in the same group home, are now in danger of their very lives. Their lives have taken completely different directions, yet an event from their once shared past just might be the ruination of them all.

Something happened 25 years ago when five teens were all involved. One has been killed and now three of them are being hunted by a pair of twin psychopaths. They are assassins with a very specific motive and now Nico, Jenna and Donnie are all desperately trying to stay alive.

We will begin with Jenna. At the tender age of fifteen, she was recruited to become an assassin of a secret corporation. She eventually retired, married and became a stay-at-home mother of two girls, one a problematic teen stepdaughter. Although retired, she is forced to take another assignment, one which could end up costing her her life, and also the lives of her family.

Nico is successful in his career as a television producer, but finds himself trapped in a mine when they were filming. Nico barely escaped with his life. What is more is that Nico was more than a show producer. In fact, he is highly in debt to an Irish mob. and he wonders if it is them who might be after him.

Lastly, there is Donnie, a famous rock star who is also in jeopardy. His drug addiction might be his downfall, but for now he is being hunted, just like Nico and Jenna are.

The three met as kids at a home called Savior House and the story occasionally goes back to that time, but the present is where most of the story takes place. Very interesting premise and the story moves along nicely and comes to a satisfying conclusion. Factor in the four narrators and a good story is made batter.

Many thanks to Minotaur Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

25 years ago Jenna, Donnie and Nico were the best of friends, relying on each other to make it through their time at Savior House, a group home for parentless teens. Things weren’t easy at Savior House, especially where kids started disappearing, including one of their friends. When the home is shut down due to these disappearances and the friends are sent their separate ways the three lose contact, but they have now been brought back together due to one commonality: someone is trying to kill them. If they hope to survive they must not only work together, but they must confront the nightmares of their pasts, as well as a secret that they share.

The thing I liked the most about this novel is that it is told from the perspectives of many narrators, allowing me as a reader to immerse myself in each of their stories. I also liked the nonlinear timeline and the way in which the past and the present were woven together to tell the entire story. It was fast-paced and entertaining, I just wish it was a little less predictable.
