This was a fun, low-angst read full of great banter and chemistry between the hero and heroine and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good epistolary romance.

this was a super cute light rom-com that I really enjoyed. I beyond enjoy lynn painters YA romances and this one was just as good. I absolutely loved this one and also loved how there was no 3rd act breakup or unnecessary drama. I’m not normally a fan for strangers to friends to lovers but this one was great. There are a few points where this book lost my interest, mainly near the beginning but other than that loved.

HOLY CHEMISTRY!!! Y’all this book was PHENOMENAL. I didn’t think Lynn could write a better rom com after Mr. Wrong Number…. But she one thousand percent did it with The Love Wager. I’m telling you, from Chapter 1 to the Epilogue it was full on goofy grinning and insane butterflies. I was laughing out loud and shaking the book because I could couldn’t handle the banter and angst. I just wanting to devour all the words while simultaneously trying to pace myself because I didn’t want the book to end. Jack is the book boyfriend to end all book boyfriends. I said it and I won’t take it back! And Hallie is just so amazingly HALLIE. She’s cool and funny and someone I want to be best friends with.

Y’all — I haven’t been this excited about a pub day in I don’t know how long!

The Love Wager by Lynn Painter comes out today and it is a RomCom MASTERPIECE! You’ve probably already seen me say this, but it will without a doubt be a top 2023 book for me. The banter, angst, and laugh out loud moments are unmatched! Go grab a copy ASAP!!!

Painter is one of my favorite authors and this was such a delight! I LOVED it. I found the humor in it resonated and I loved that it had some fun tropes, but they weren’t the entire plot point; I loved at times this book had a lot of funny self-awareness towards tropes in romcoms, like the “only one-bed” trope. I found Hallie and Jack undeniably cute and I cannot wait for my reread of this!

What’s it about?
Hitting rock bottom after crawling out of a man’s hotel room, Hallie is resetting her life. When she logs on to dating apps, she comes across Jack, the man she just crawled away from. Establishing that they don’t want anything romantically between them, they still support one another in finding love by making a wager on who can find it first- Thus ensues a series of comedic, questionable, and heartfelt experiences, but while they have determined they don’t want to date each other, the universe calls for other plans.

I wanted to read something fun, light that was a quick read. This book achieved all of this. I picked up the book and finished it within 24 hours. The story involved a couple different tropes at the same time: a hook-up, and fake dating. This book was perfect for meeting this.

Hallie is working two jobs and having fun living a young adult life. She has put her grown up life on hold and wants to work lots and save up money before she starts adulting. Jack is attending his sister's wedding party where the bartender (Hallie) looks familiar. Turns out earlier that day Jack purchases an engagement ring for his current girlfriend who is planning on proposing to that day. Things don't go as planned, as his girlfriend becomes jealous, has an outburst and throws a glass of wine in Hallie's face. Jack revisits the whole notion of proposing to Val and decides not to move forward with the proposal plans. He ends up breaking up with Val, returning to the Wedding with a bottle of alcohol and suggests to Hallie they get drunk together and hangout.

I recommend you pick this book to take on a vacation and enjoy by the pool or on a plane.

Absolutely delightful.

This book is hilarious and sweet. It's got alternating perspectives between both main characters, and it's laugh-out-loud funny!

LOVED this book. This is my third by this author and I’ve loved them all.

I especially loved the alternating chapters in this book as well as the wit, charm, and hilarity of the situation both characters have gotten themselves into. They shared a drunken one night stand together, but ended up becoming very good friends. Because their friendship bloomed so quickly and genuinely, this reads more like a friends to lovers, even though they’re new friends and only recently met.

Oh, gosh. Where to begin? Thank you, thank you, NetGalley, for the ARC! First and foremost, I went into this already behind a huge fan of Lynn Painter as both a writer and a person. Better Than the Movies, her YA debut, is one of my favorite novels. I also read Mr. Wrong Number, her NA debut, and enjoyed it, mostly for the comedy. Anyway, I was rooting for Jack and Hallie from the very first page. The two of them have one night together, and then become best friends after betting on which one of them could fall in love with someone from a dating app first. Obviously, it’s not very platonic between them, and as we read each of their POVs, we learn how much they enjoy being around each other and are begging them to finally admit their feelings to each other. Like Lynn’s other books, this one felt like I was watching a romantic comedy. She hit every beat—from the meet cute to the confession in the rain—and yet it felt fresh and organic. It’s an incredibly sweet story and the dialogue, especially the banter, is GRIPPING. I was giggling and kicking my feet, and although romance is my favorite genre, I don’t usually have strong physical reactions to flirty lines or romantic gestures. If you want to feel like you’re watching a movie, and if you enjoy stories in which the boy falls first, I would highly recommend picking this up!

This book will show you that the friends to lovers trope can be fun and can deliver banter like an enemies to lovers book could! I really enjoy the back and forth between the two leads and find myself either laughing or gushing at their exchanges.

Hallie was such a great female lead and Jack is totally book boyfriend material. You’d honestly find yourself rooting for these two to just finally talk and admit their feeling to each other lol

Idk what it is but if a book includes travel and a wedding trope, I also gravitate towards it. I love reading abut Vail, Colorado and honestly, it’s in my travel bucket list too.

From the disastrous meet cute to that movie worthy of an ending, this book has fully grabbed my attention! I am honestly fighting a reading/ booksta slump right now because life is crazy this week but this book reminded me of why I love reading and it’ll now be forever special to my heart because of it.

It is a little spicier than what I usually read but like I said if the chemistry and story are both there, I can handle all the spice 😂

Seriously, Lynn Painter is a romance author you should look out for!

I think I may be a little in love with Jack. OK a lot in love. There's just something about the way he cares for Hallie that's very appealing, and she is a firecracker that I would love to be friends with. Their story is so much fun and I enjoyed the little twist that made it unique in the world of romcoms. I won't spoil it for you, but you don't want to miss this one! The audiobook is narrated by Kristen DiMercurio and Zachary Webber which makes it perfection!!

I absolutely loved Mr Wrong Number, so I was beyond excited to read this one. Unfortunately, I think this was a case of it's me and not the book. I just didn't click with it. I will most definitely recommend it to other rom com lovers!

One thing about me is I love a book set in my hometown. 🫶🏾 okay this is my first Lynn painter book and I am obsessed. I loved this story from start to finish. From the one night stand gone wrong to best friends to lovers. I ate it up. This book kept me laughing and swooning. So so good. 10/10 recommend.

A fun rom-com that will make you laugh out loud. When two people make a wager on who will find love first. This book will make you laugh and make you want tacos.

I am still largely on the "romance is bullshit" end of the spectrum and I'm actually surprisingly okay with it ... for me. Then there's Jack and Hallie and you just have to know from the description that they're destined to be together. Watching them figure that out and overcome the obstacle course of online dating other people in the process was an absolute delight -- except, of course, for the times that I thought it was going to rip my heart out.

It was nice seeing Jack's best friend and sister, Colin and Liv. I would highly recommend reading Mr. Wrong Number first to meet the family ... and because it's another phenomenal book.

And now I go back to swiping left and right just in case there's actually a Jack out there.

3.5 stars rounded to 4 Not my favorite by the author but still a rollicking good time!

Whether you’re a fan of Mr. Wrong Number or reading this as a standalone story, it makes no difference, as the author does a fantastic job cementing these characters in their own arc fully. As someone who fell into the first category, I was eager to continue with some familiar side characters in finding their own happily ever after, and I wasn’t disappointed. Painter is known for her witty banter and hilarious exchanges between characters, which were on full display here. My gripe with the ending is that it felt like Jack took all the heat for how things went down, and I think both characters were equally at fault. Regardless, this was such a fun read and I look forward from more from the author!

AMAZING !! LOVED IT!! Full of ALL the tropes!! I fell in love with Mr. Wrong Number and this was no different. Lynn is the QUEEN of online message banter !! Lynn’s writing is simply effervescent. Her stories always keep me smiling, and The Love Wager is no different. It’s fun, flirty, and so funny.

Hallie Piper meets Jack Marshall when he buys an engagement ring from her. The next day, she’s bartending at his sister’s wedding, and he ends up dumping his girlfriend (bc really, she’s the worst). He and Hallie are each flailing near rock-bottom. They end up hooking up that night. It’s just the tipping point Hallie needs to fuel her transition into so-called adulthood. After a new haircut, apartment, and wardrobe, she takes her chances on a new dating app. When she connects with Jack on the app, the two team up to help each other find love, making a wager to see who will find it first.

Dating wise, it’s not going great, but Hallie and Jack become fast friends. And their consolation prize for failed dates is getting tacos together, so it can’t be all that bad, right? The banter is perfect. The epistolary elements through the app/texting are so cute. It was really rewarding seeing these two goofballs fall hard for each other.

Hallie and Jack think they don't want to pursue a relationship. Are they lying to themselves or just can't see it yet? I don't know. They do, however, strike up a great friendship. I thoroughly loved their banter via text message and in person. These two are so good together. Of course, it takes the whole book for them to realize there is more than friendship here.

As mentioned, the banter was great. Both Hallie and Jack are sympathetic and likable. The whole book was a great escape from the real world for a bit.

I wasn’t aware that this was the sequel to Mr. Wring Number. I guess I should’ve picked that up when the synopsis said it followed Jack, the brother of the female lead in Mr. Wrong Number.

Overall, The Love Wager was a cute read. Lynn Painter writes witty dialogue and is my favorite thing about her books. However, I found Mr. Wrong Number to be a bit more engaging and funnier than this book.

I liked seeing the characters from Mr. Wrong Number make an appearance! But overall, the friends to lovers and characters in this book were less compelling and engaging than book one!

I will absolutely be reading this book again. The banter, chemistry and swoon factor were off the charts here! Jack and Hallie were a couple made in fiction heaven. Betting on who will fall in love first while on a dating app, it just gets so sweet and honest! The tropes in this book are wild! It made me so happy. Forced proximity, fake dating, he falls first...really the list goes on and on! But you should read this book purely for the banter!
