3.5⭐️
Those book could be just the thing for some readers. Masonheimer writes to give Christian women a biblical understanding of the gospel and its practical application, and also a confidence to explain and defend their own faith. Beyond this, she also writes with a desire for readers to walk away with a greater love for and devotion to God through their study of Him. Although I don’t agree with every viewpoint the author holds, I appreciate her ability to present an overview of Christian doctrine in a way that isn’t overly academic or overly casual.

Readers should approach this book as a high-flying overview of each doctrine and not as an in-depth explanation. Neither is it a book on how to build your own approach to studying theology (as the title suggests), but it attempts to provide women with a foundation for continuing their own pursuit. This book attempts to cover a lot of content in a very small amount of space, so some concepts felt rushed through. It’s a helpful starting point for those newer to studying doctrine, but others may want something that focuses on specific issues with more depth.

Thank you to Netgalley and W Publishing/Thomas Nelson for the complimentary ebook in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.

Everyone should be knowledgeable about what they believe and why they believe. In this book, Phylicia expertly articulates the topics discussed so you are able to see and understand more than one view. This book creates a tangible understanding of the foundation of Christian faith for anyone wanting to grow in their understanding of doctrine and Biblical literacy. Phylicia has the gift of teaching and this book will help many believers grow in their faith.

As much as I wanted to love this book, it's just not my favorite. Phylicia Masonheimer gives a lot of information but doesn't land the plane on definitive theological topics. It's not that the book is bad it's just not my favorite. There are many other systematic theology books that are easy to read and comprehend that are more helpful in figuring how what you believe.

Excellent introductory book on the different theological views within Christianity! I’d recommend this to anyone who is wanting a better understanding of the different Christian traditions and how they differ theologically.

LOVED this book. Phylicia packed each chapter of this book full of research and wisdom. She really helps bring big theological topics down to basic understanding. This book is so helpful for anyone wanting to learn more about theology!

This book is for everyone. READ THIS BOOK! I learned so much about the Bible in these pages and I’ve been reading it and walking with Jesus my whole life. Whether you’re new to Christianity, just checking it out, or have been a Christian for many years, this is a must read. I bought a copy after borrowing on Net Galley because it’s that good.

Thank you so much Thomas Nelson for my early release of Every Woman a Theologian! I felt like it was very educating without reading like a text book. It really made me look inside to evaluate my relation and taught me some great tips to use daily. Will be reading this author again!

I’ve seen that this book has definitely been awesome for some people, but it just wasn’t for me at all.

I’m a woman and I wanted to learn more about theology, so I thought this book would be a great option. However, there was pretty much nothing that made it specific for women (which made the title and marketing odd), and the theology felt like it was only a piece of the book.

The book was saturated with stories and and many, many passages that read more like opinion or inspiration from a traditional Christian self-help/inspirational book. It’s not that those parts were bad—it’s that they didn’t interest me, and, had I know they would make up a large portion of the book, I wouldn’t have picked it up. It felt like the author was trying to combine aspirations for multiple Christian non-fiction books into one book. None of her ideas were bad, they just should have been separated into two or three books.

As far as the theology side, I found myself disappointed with the lack of “meat” to grab onto. Again, I found out too late that I wasn’t the target audience (I consider this more an error of marketing—this isn’t geared towards “Every Woman”—than writing). As someone who grew up in church, most of the material was familiar to me, seemed commonsense, or was never discussed in depth. And the parts that were unfamiliar to me didn’t have enough evidence with them to convince me that they were true.

However, my favorite part of this book was the way she broke apart different strains of beliefs around certain doctrines. She explained denominations’ beliefs on salvation, different Christian’s beliefs on the rapture, etc. Again, while I have some of the same issues as listed above (not enough evidence, skimming over some concepts, etc.), I did learn things from these areas that I’d never learned from the churches I’ve attended.

In conclusion (I just realized I wrote an essay-length review), I think this book has untapped potential that could have been better utilized with more focus and a slightly different marketing plan. While this is not a book I enjoy or recommend, I am happy that so many other people have appreciated it! And I hope it continues to reach the right people.

This is the book I have been looking for, even praying for. If you want to read and learn more about the Bible, in a simple, easy to understand text, this is the book for you. So many of us dive into the Bible for the first time not knowing very much about it. We read the pages of the Bible and are lacking the history and structural knowledge of what we are reading. This book breaks all that down for you so you can go into the Bible with more knowledge than if you were just to open it and start trying to decipher its passages. I like how the author also discusses different denominations, which is also helpful in understanding where today’s Christian denominations started and who believes in what. She also paves the way for us, so we know what being a good Christian entails.

Every Woman a Theologian was a good read. I liked how the author explained different denominations, doctrines, beliefs, etc. While I was already familiar with some of the things talked about, it was interesting to learn the things I didn't know.

"The Bible is the foundation of our theology, our worship, and our experience of Christ. It's hard to let something that valuable gather dust on the shelf! If we want to become theologians, we have to start where theologians begin: the Word of God. Through this breathed-out Word our own lungs are filled with air, empowering us to live the Christian life God desires. "

All in all, Every Woman a Theologian was well worth the read. I found all the chapters interesting and can see myself rereading it in the future.

This book is such an amazing introduction to Bible doctrine. It is readable and easy to understand. It is simplistic, so if you are already a student of theology, you may find this repetitive of things you already know. I was already familiar with 98% of what Phylicia covered in the book, but I have and will continue to recommend this to people who are just starting to learn about Bible doctrines and theology. Phylicia graciously shares and explains perspectives that may differ from her own. Reading the book, you wouldn't know where she stands on all of these issues, and I think that is awesome.

I enjoyed all the information in this book of how to look at the Bible and understand the Christian faith even more. It was practical yet deep.

I love the upsurge of books empowering people - women in particular - to not shy away from claiming the moniker "theologian." We all have a theology and it's important to be able to explain the whys and hows behind your own beliefs. Phylicia Masonheimer gives a wonderful overview of the basics of Christian doctrine. Her stories give a nice personal flavor to the studious aspects of the book. I've been a Christian for decades and this was still an awesome resource.

Phylicia does a wonderful job introducing women to theology. She uses practical life examples to illustrate her points. Some of the uses I could see for this study would be a mom and her teen girls, or a homeschool class, or women’s Bible study. The companion study guide includes the option to watch a short ( about 15 minutes) video with Phylicia. There are several new books coming out emphasizing theology and I think the features of this study are unique.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I wasn’t sure exactly what I expected to find in the book, but what I did find was a deep and well-researched theology book! It brought home the reasons why women need to make sure they understand their faith while also providing women with a starting point of what exactly they should make sure they understand. A needed book in this world!

Phylicia Masonheimer brings all the biblical fidelity and clarity of a theology textbook within the helpful context of her own backstory with everything from deliverance from her porn addiction to the daily details of marriage and motherhood. She exposes her readers to the words and work of prominent theologians and makes it clear that whatever camp we claim, our view of God impacts the way we live and work.

I appreciated Masonheimer’s counsel to “diversify the voices we listen to” and her conviction that we need not all agree on second and third-tier issues. For example, orthodox believers can disagree about the timing of Christ’s return, but we must stand strong on core doctrines such as Christ’s humanity or bodily resurrection.

Believers with questions need solid direction that takes them directly to Scripture for their answers, and at the very least, those who are walking away from the faith need to know exactly what they are walking away from.

Every Woman a Theologian by Phylicia Masonheimer is exactly what the title says. It is a basic, but thorough, overview of Christian theology for women. The author does a good job of covering all the major Christian theological stances, for anyone who needs that information in one book. I didn't quite agree with some of her points, but I appreciate the thoroughness of this book. Thanks to NetGalley for the free digital review copy. All opinions are my own.

I have been following Phylicia on social media for years. Phylicia does a great job of laying out the basics of introducing Christian theology from many points of view. It is a great starting place to study theology or a refresher for those already more familiar. Glad to have read it.
