This book was enlightening and very engaging. I had no idea that the Catholic Church was so involved with the Far Right Christian movement. The connections that the author shares with us are very shocking at times, even for someone who has been aware of some of the dark money schemes to make our country a theocracy. I think it is very important for citizens to understand the extent to which their thinking is being programmed by highly conservative groups. I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Net Galley, for providing me with an early copy in return for an honest review.

Mary Jo McConahay reveals the disconnect between the values that many Catholic Bishops in the United States say they uphold and believe in and their actions. Their singular focus on abortion rather than other life-affirming initiatives like opposition to capital punishment, promoting peace and disarmament, care for the very poor, turned them into political operatives supporting the Republican Party. Many readers will come away from this wondering how the Catholic Churches (any church?) can maintain tax-exempt status.
Even more dispiriting is the contrast between this group of Bishops and Frances, the current Pope who calls out all threats to life - ecological, political, anti-racism,etc. It seems that some (not all) American Bishops have lost their way and miss the message of the New Testament.
This is an important book that should be widely read by members of all faiths and by citizens who want to understand the the role of money in politics.
