A detailed, technical guide to botany for gardeners. Your average gardener doesn't need to know the vast majority of the information in this book, but for interested gardeners, this book does a good job at making a quite technical topic relatively accessible.
A book you can either read from cover to cover or dip in and out of, it would be particularly good as a hard copy, rather than an e-book.
Clearly explained and nicely illustrated, I'd recommend this to gardeners who are keen to learn about the science of plants.

I am such a plant and science lover so I am glad to have a book that discusses Botany. This is an extremely technical book, so if your just looking for something that is written in Layman's terms you may want to look elsewhere. There are also a lot of blocks of text to read, which doesn't bother me as I knew I was going to be reading an academic book, but I can see how this might throw others off who are not used to it. This book was filled to the brim with information, and Zona is really knowledgable something which I greatly appreciated.

As a keen gardener with some previous horticultural training I've been wanting to learn more about the science of plants for a while, and this title seemed like it could fit the bill perfectly.

For the most part, I'd say that my expectations were more than satisfied. I enjoyed reading it, I learnt a lot, and I was left wanting to learn more. I've already followed up some of the helpful suggestions for further reading at the end of the book.

I must confess to finding the Chapter One section on Life Cycles of Plants (pages 20-24) heavy going. My feeling was that too much information was being squeezed into too few words, and although the figures were helpful they didn't clarify everything about what is clearly a complex topic.

Once I got past that section, however, I found the book to be an easy read. The informal style and copious illustrated examples kept me enthralled throughout.

I occasionally found it irritating when technical terms were introduced without a clear explanation of their meaning, but I had the digital version of the book so full text search meant that this wasn't a serious problem.

My main criticism would be the index. It contains plenty of references, but they are mostly grouped under just a few headings. In order to find endosperm, for example, it's no use looking under E, you have to know to look under R for reproduction! If I'd been reading the printed version I would very easily have got lost.

Don't let these issues put you off though. They didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book, and I'd thoroughly recommend it to any gardening enthusiast who'd like to learn more about the underlying science.

This book was a little hard to get through. It really delves deep into the basics of botany and while some sections were very helpful, I still found the writing fairly cumbersome to comprehend and get through. I think this would be helpful for gardeners who are REALLY into understanding plants but for the rest of us, it might be a bit much.

A Gardener's Guide to Botany is a wonderful introduction to plant life! I am new to caring for plants (indoors mainly) and I have definitely learned a lot from this book. It really goes in-depth to help one understand all there is to know about plants.
This book is definitely one I would buy for someone who loves plants, be it a beginner or a green thumb.

Like a biology refresher - interesting info, but very scientific. Good images help to explain the concepts.

I would like to thank Quarto Publishing Group - Cool Springs Press and NetGalley for granting me this ARC in exchange for writing an honest review!

I will be honest, I haven't read the whole book for various reasons; I have skimmed and read some parts. The top reason is that I prefer having a physical copy rather than reading it digitally since it's more textbook material. If you are into botany and plants then this book is for you. It talks about plants from A to Z such as the physical appearance of a plant, what they need (water, nutrients, light), their reproduction system, and so on. The pictures and description are marvelous; I have thoroughly enjoyed the parts I have read.

Absolutely beautiful book. This is a quintessential book for anyone who either loves botany, or is just getting into it. The content is thorough, thoughtfully organized, and very easy to understand even for someone who doesn’t understand bitany to begin with.
This book is gorgeous. The pictures, illustrations and graphics make it so pleasant to read and look at. This would make for a great coffee table book. Wonderfully done!

I made a career change mid-life to working in a nursery and most of my knowledge is either on the job, or self-taught. Since my college coursework was in a different field, I never studied botany, but always wanted to know certain things. Scott Zona's book covers a wide variety of botanical questions I've had and some I didn't even know to ask. It's written in an easy to understand format that you don't need a science degree to get through. It would certainly be helpful to anyone who didn't train for this field or just the average home gardener wanting to know more. An entertaining, enjoyable and education read all in one.
