The Hands On French Cookbook by Elisabeth de Châtillon was an interesting cookery book and if you love French food or want to learn how to prepare and cook it this is a book for you. It was easy to follow and has lots of interesting recipes throughout especially as it is well organised throughout. Each recipe includes a list of utensils, that you would need, as well as the list of ingredients, Plus, the background of each dish you are creating which was brilliant!

I had to go out and purchase this book which I am still working through with no complaints from my Husband!

Big Thank you to Netgalley and Books Go Social for my ARC

Description
If you think French food is complicated, decadent, and heavy, think again! If you think learning and exploring another language is difficult or boring, think again! And if you think cooking French food and learning French at the same time is impossible, teacher and home cook Elisabeth de Châtillon is here to prove you wrong. It might sound too good to be true, but The Hands On French Cookbook is full of healthy, simple French recipes that you can make for friends and family while you learn not only the French language but also a little bit about French culture in a relaxed, fun, tasty way.

This is a lovely collection of French recipes that I have tried. I thought the concept of learning the language through cooking is really cool!

I love cooking and have just started to make French food. This book appealed to me as it has the instructions in French and English.
I found the Ebook format very difficult to follow as the text was all over the place and it was difficult to read at times. I suspect that the finished copy will be a lot easier and I am tempted to buy a copy that I can use.

This title will make an excellent addition to anyone who loves cookbooks. It can be daunting for some, if they are new to these foods, but possibly a welcome challenge.

Très intéressant! My knowledge of French cooking and the language was not great but this author has a unique way of explaining both. This would be an amazing book for anyone wanting to learn French! Very immersive style of teaching.

"The Hands On French Cookbook is a cookbook with a unique approach. This book combines classic (and some non-classic) French recipes, with all text translated into both French and English. This allows the reader to both cook these achievable recipes and learn some French phrases at the same time.

My only criticism is that I would have liked to see more photographs of the methods and techniques, as novice cooks usually benefit from visuals accompanying text.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Recipes and a French language lesson....

This is a unique idea. Take a few healthy recipe and pair it with a corresponding French language lesson and add in photos. Violå.

Well, this was unexpected. I didn’t see beyond the French cooking angle on the cover, so I was surprised to discover this recipe book is also a French language primer, with all recipes and text duplicated in English and French to encourage a learning of French. It’s a fun concept but it all becomes a little confusing and cumbersome. My biggest issue is that there is no typographic distinction between the English and French texts, so it’s a bit tricky to follow the recipes, which become meandering and very long. (Note: I am reading this book on an iPad so I don’t know whether the physical book makes a typographical distinction). The recipes themselves are inviting, but I’m not sure I have the will to wade through all that text to get to the finished product. This is a very niche (and very nice) idea, but the reader needs a little help. Perhaps it would have been helpful to run the recipes separately in each language at the end?

I wasn't able to read this as an e-book.
It was all over the place unfortunately.
I was really looking forward to it.
Sorry.

I love this cookbook! The bilingual approach is absolutely brilliant because it can be used by readers of all levels of French and English. The recipes are fun, and there are dishes for all levels of cooks. This is something I'll return to time and time again.

I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. A absolutely beautiful cookbook. The photos are beautiful. I love how the recipe is in French/English. The recipes look amazing and fairly easy. I can't wait to try some of them out. Thank you again! I will be going back to this recipe book over and over.

This cookbook has some healthy versions of staple French food sprinkled in with some French in an effort to help you learn the language. In theory, this is a marvelous idea especially as it is geared at teaching some essential vocabulary. Whether to order a meal out or to know what to buy at the grocery store, this is great vocabulary to know. In practice, most people skip over the explanations and go straight to the ingredients (what do I need?) and basic instructions (what do I need to do to make my recipe look remotely like it should and taste like it too?). Therefore, the bulk of how this information is being presented and where the language is being explained is going to be skipped over. The recipes are good alternatives and it's that the appendix also includes alternatives and the original recipes at times too.

I liked the idea of brushing up my French whilst following some recipes. The problem was that the French had English in parentheses as it went along and then next paragraph was the English translation. For example
"500g/17 fl oz/2 tasses de lait (cup of milk (ou lait végétal [milk vegetable]: amande ou riz par example" then "500ml/17 fl oz/2 cups milk (or non dairy milk: almond or rice for instance)! This made the whole thing rather messy to read. There's too much repetition - asking for help if you don't understand (cutting potatoes, green beans and so on), being careful of sharp knives. There are some useful alternatives offered - sweet potatoes for spuds and some interesting bits about origins of the dishes - Puy lentils and the like. Just the 10 recipes as advertised - all fairly basic. There are the command verbs of the recipe listed at the end of each and this, again, is rather repetitive; not surprising as there are only so many things you can do to mix/crack/prepare and the like and it might help consolidate you vocabulary. Very few photographs which is always a shame in recipe books and especially one where you can easily get confused. I'm sorry, nice idea but didn't quite come out as I, for one, would have wished. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

This book is not what I thought it was going to be. I was looking for some simple home made french recipes to try out. I was not expecting to have to learn french to follow the recipes. For someone who wants to learn french this book would be a great way to get started, but if you are just looking for recipes, this is really hard to follow.
