OK let me start this book by saying the writing is beautiful it was a lyrical and almost had a musical quality to it. I listen to it with my screen reader reading it to me and even that way it sounded so good. I enjoyed her thoughts on the things she found in her dad‘s suitcase and I can appreciate how much that meant to her and her sister. However to me writing about how excited he was to be staying in a nice hotel and hearing the lyrical tones of a beautiful woman’s voice and how good she smelled especially since he was in his early 20s and that must’ve been so exciting it must’ve been to be young and in love and in France but the whole time I read this book I was waiting to hear commentary on either his opinions of fighting for the right to incinerate whole families experiment on twins kill legions of people rip babies from their moms arms or at the belly leaf some type of counter balance but the only two times they mentioned Jews was once was in reference to a book and the second time was when mentioning that he was crowded on a French train that the Jews had to sit in the second class seating. So while we’re supposed to be invested in this man’s adventure knowing my dates from history I just couldn’t do it. I think Heather been some type of equalizer of her at least at the very least giving a general apology or making a statement that that was a horrible war and we should’ve been in it or whatever but there was nothing in that really disappointed me and I just couldn’t feel invested because no matter what he did for the German army… Whatever he did was helping to kill innocent babies peoples grandmothers not gonna go on and on but this just made me sad that there was nothing said about the 4 million Jews killed in Germany that pave the way for this man to have a grand adventure. so historically I’m glad I read it but I have read other books written by X Nazi soldiers and the children that have had nothing but regrets for their part in a war that killed so many innocent people but this one was just representatives look at the great Talmud deadhead and even when he was in prison he got the barbecue indigo buffet style launches while the juice hardly ate at all. I’m sorry I couldn’t stop thinking about that I’m glad black rose writing gives everyone a chance and there’s a big believer in the first amendment I just thought there should’ve been something about why he was there I thought that was so totally disrespectful. I received this book from Net Galley and Black Rose Writing but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.

Thank you NetGalley and Black Rose Writing!

I so badly wanted to love this story, but unfortunately, I found myself very disconnected from the story.
I love the idea of this book, and some parts I thoroughly enjoyed but overall, this one just wasn't for me.
