He thinks his secret is safe. But she knows the truth…

One would think they could trust their Doctor but maybe we should all be a little more wary. This is certainly this case in this latest book by Daniel Hurst. For an author, Daniel releases a lot of books and I am going to be honest, I do find him a bit hit and miss but I have to say this one was a success.

Once again we have the horrible main character that does nothing to impress the reader but who also vital to this story, in this case Fern, then again her husband Drew isn't exactly the most principled man especially for someone in his profession. The book moves from the the different POV's of different time frames and moves at quite a fast pace. Selfish people doing selfish things does lead to addictive reading and I have to say I did find this book hard to put down, I was hoping that karma would rise its head, I guess you will have to read the book to find out if this turned out to the readers satisfaction.

The book was a bit predictable in parts but there is a twist at the end that I did not pick. Overall I would recommend this one, it was definitely an entertaining read. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.

This was the first book I read from Daniel Hurst, and it won't be my last. (I've already put several on my TBR list. His 20 Minute Series sounds intriguing.)

While somewhat predictable, and at times a bit cliche, The Doctor's Wife was still an enjoyable read. Hurst writes well, and keeps you involved and turning pages.

The characters are well-developed, though none are exactly good humans. And that's ok. Let's face it, the world is full of less than moral people. Books that have nothing but do-gooders, rainbows, and unicorns tend to be unrealistic. It's fun to read stories with relatable, thought less than desirable characters.

Thank you to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. Publication date is January 31, 2023. If you want a well-written domestic thriller, give The Doctor's Wife a spin.

Review

Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy of The
Doctor's Wife by Daniel Hurst. This book may have
replaced The Passenger as my favorite by this talented
author. Clearly, Dr. Drew completely underestimated his
wife Fern along with Rory and his wife Alice. I refuse to
give to much away as the joy of reading this book is
seeing it slowly unfold. I saw another review where they
were disappointed by the epilogue. I get it, however it
made me wonder if Mr Hurst might be considering a
follow up featuring the cunning Fern Devlin.

He thinks his secret is safe...but she knows the truth...

If you have ever read a Daniel Hurst book, you will know you are in the for the ride of your life from the very first page until the vert last. You know you are going to get an edge of your seat addictive thriller with plenty of twists, even when the outcome seems easily predictable. You know you are not going to be disappointed either way because Daniel Hurst does not compose flops. His clever, and oftentimes witty, prose is so skillfully constructed his thrillers cannot ever be anything but brilliant! I just know before I've even started that I am going to be in for a thrilling and addictive read. And THE DOCTOR'S WIFE was no exception.

There are very few characters in this cleverly constructed plot, as with many of Hurst's thrillers, and yet he still manages to surprise readers every time. THE DOCTOR'S WIFE opens with a very clear and concise scene...some would consider a spoiler...but it's just one piece of the puzzle he has created for us to try and piece together. And like with many of his thrillers, we have most of the pieces but are usually missing the final piece to complete the entire picture. Even if we (thought) we knew what that picture would look like by the book's end.

From the very beginning the reader is privy to many aspects that are generally revealed much later in the story but that is Hurst's ingenious way. Lull us into a sense of security where we think we know everything before throwing us a twist we weren't expecting.

Fern and Drew (that's Doctor Drew to anyone within earshot) have upped sticks from Manchester and moved to a quiet village bordering Scotland where Drew has taken up the position as the village GP. Why? For a quieter life and slower pace? No. Doctor Drew has other ideas and has manipulated circumstances for his own advantage because at the end of the day, that's all Doctor Drew is concerned with. Getting what he wants.

Drew is, quite frankly, a narcissistic self obsessed man (child) who pretty much throws his toys out of the sandpit when things don't go his way. He honestly believes he is entitled to get exactly what he wants and will justify his wrong doings all day long until the cows come home. He is handsome, intelligent and charming and only has to flash his smile for women to be like putty in his hands. So arrogant and sure of himself is he that he really cannot see what is really going on.

You see, his wife Fern is not so innocent herself. She has a secret as well. And Drew is so stupidly arrogant and focused on his own wants and needs that he cannot see that he too is being manipulated. Fern is not the naive wife he thinks she is. She isn't as stupid as he assumes her to be. But then he is too far up his own "you know what" to see any of this. All he sees is what he wants and that is his main objective.

The story unfolds in the dual narratives of both Fern and Drew respectively, so you get a taste of both of them in all their unlikeable forms. Part of me sympathised with Fern but when I realised she wasn't as naive or as in the dark as I had first thought, I began cheering her on...even though she wasn't entirely likeable. There was just something that wanted her to come out smelling of roses. Drew, on the other hand, I just wanted to slap his arrogant mouth and set his pants on fire...preferably with him in them!

Despite knowing what's going on as we are being drip-fed the story little by little in minute detail, Hurst still kept a few things up his sleeve till the end. And although I had my suspicions and was proved right...I didn't see the final twist in the epilogue until near the very end.

His first publication with Bookouture, THE DOCTOR'S WIFE is a fast paced read that I read in one sitting (split into two with dinner in between...lol) in the space of around 5 hours. Daniel Hurst's thrillers are always uncomplicated easy and fast paced reads with a few twists thrown in for good measure and packed with loads of secrets, lies and manipulation making for a fabulous entertaining read. Hurst has an incredibly easy style that really draws you in and doesn't let you go until the end. I have loved every book of his I've devoured in the twelve months since discovering him and he has firmly earned the place of one of my go-to favourite authors I auto-buy without even reading the premise.

Overall, THE DOCTOR'S WIFE is an easy entertaining read that you will easily devour in a matter of hours, if not one sitting (as I did). Once you have read one of Hurst's thrillers, I doubt you will be able to resist hunting down his other books which are sure to keep as you entertained as any of them.

I would like to thank #DanielHurst, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheDoctorsWife in exchange for an honest review.

I gave this book a 3.5 stars

He thinks his secret is safe. But she knows the truth. On the surface it looks like our main character Drew, has it all together; a great profession, a loving wife, and beautiful home. But it’s far from the truth. His wife, Fern discovers that he isn’t the faithful, perfect husband he acts to be. What could happen next?

I really enjoyed that it was a fast read. The first half was a little slow but it did pick up near the middle. Overall I think the whole story was a bit predictable. The author lets us know the plot twist early on. I think I would have enjoyed it if it was only one POV so we wouldn’t see the Wife’s perspective until half way through the book since she gives a lot of insight. Regardless it was a quick and enjoyable read.

This is an interesting, suspenseful little thriller that culminates in a dramatic twist. This writer is always good when I want a story that’s quick and intense with an ending that’s all but guaranteed to be satisfying. I liked this one as well and will be keeping an eye out for what comes next.

This is my first read from this author and I was pleasantly surprised by his writing style! The character development and storyline were both attention keeping.

Just because I can, I will start at the end of the book. That twist at the end...and the one in the epilogue was amazing! You thought it was done and then it wasn't. Really well thought out. I am becoming a huge Daniel Hurst fan. This book needed something to pull it through and that pretty much did it.

It started off pretty slow, meeting the married couple Fern and Dr Dew and trying to piece out why they would move from Manchester to a little town in the middle of nowhere. The storyline flows really well as the plot comes together. We root for Fern, although her character is a little bit unlikeable. The dual POV's gave all the answers you will seek.

A really good story that hits the mark!

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

I hate to admit how much I was intrigued by this book from the get go. Dr Drew is such a jerk but I couldn’t put the book down until I knew what his wife, Fern, had planned. Written in the first person, from the view point of both Drew and Fern, this is an easy, fast paced, page turner.
True to Hurst’s writing style, The Doctor’s Wife is another must read!
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture and Daniel Hurst for the opportunity to read and (guiltily) enjoy this ARC.

What would you do if you discovered your spouse cheated on you? The logical response would be to confront and then request a divorce, right? Well, that was not the response of Fern, the heroine in The Doctor’s Wife. Fern epitomized the quote ” Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’. One can only describe her plans for revenge against her husband and ultimately his mistress as diabolical. While reading, I felt like watching an episode from the documentary ‘Deadly Women’.

The characters featured in the Doctor’s Wife are not very likeable. I started out disliking Drew, Fern’s husband and his mistress Alice and feeling sympathetic towards Fern and Alice’s husband Rory. After all Fern and Rory were the victims of their spouses’ infidelity. However, by the end I disliked them all while feeling a tad bit of sympathy for Alice. I will say this though Fern was not only diabolical she was also smart which made her a force to reckon with.

Now after reading the reading the prologue I had a fair idea of what was in store for the characters. So don’t pick up The Doctor’s Wife expecting a mystery. However, expect a journey so twisted you will find yourself glued to the pages as you anticipate the outcome.

Narrated from POVs of Fern and Drew readers’ gets front row seat into the minds of both individuals. Readers learn what happened in the past as well as the present. Also the secrets they both harboured came to light. The story concluded with an interesting epilogue leaving one to wonder if a sequel is in the making or if in the vein of all books in this genre will readers be left to draw their own conclusions.

THE DOCTOR’S WIFE delivered an addictive, twisty and clever tale of deception and betrayal. A tale where not one but two marriages are destroyed and lives are forever changed. This story demonstrated the reason one should never underestimate a woman. I enjoyed my first Daniel Hurst novel and look forward to reading more of his work.

Drew has a big secret from his loyal wife. Hes convinced he has the power sadly he's too self obsessed to realise things aren't that always what they seem.
A fantastic physiological thriller full of twists and turns. Good strong characer development. Told from the couple's individual point of view.

Polished precise and hard to put down.
Look firward to the next one

First, I want to thank Daniel Hurst, Bookouture and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review.

O.M.G!! Why have I not read a Daniel Hurst book til now?! Well, that will definitely change in the future!! O.M.G!! The Doctor’s Wife read like a prime time soap with all the juicy drama filled storyline that you just couldn't help but binge read!

Miley Cyrus’s Flowers song kept playing in my head while I read The Doctor’s Wife! Why do you ask? This is another one of those reads that reminds me I am better off single than be in a messed up situation like this!!

Let’s talk about the good doctor that more than one time creeped me out and totally upset with his behavior. However, I just couldn’t stop reading it.

WOWZERS! Can we talk about the wicked secrets, shocking revelations, and the curveballs that made my head just spin?!! I am not just talking about at the climax of the book but spread out throughout.

Daniel Hurst is one author I need to read and review more often-especially if every book is like this one!! The Doctor’s Wife deserves way more than 5 stars as it is a must read book! Thank you to Bookouture for introducing me to this new to me author!!

“She hadn’t been the only one in this village who had loved the deceased. He was popular with the opposite sex, too popular, if anything. And that was one of the reasons why he was now dead.”

The Doctor’s Wife starts off with a dead body on the beach. You don’t know who that body belongs to or how it came to be there. But you find out that and so much more as this story masterfully unwraps like a present.

Wheeeeeee this was quite a ride. I flew through this book in record time! It was just so compulsively readable. With dual POV, both Fern (the wife) and Drew (the husband), and short chapters, this murder mystery kept me guessing and was twisty turny throughout. I don’t want to say too much more as I think the more blind you go in the more you’ll get from it.

I was given an advanced copy of the audio along with the ebook and it was fantastic. Told with dual narrators, one each for Fern and Drew, it was captivating and sucked me right in. Each narrator expertly captured the tone and mindset of these characters, making them seem all the more real. Just a fantastic story and a fantastic delivery all around!

Thank you so much to Netgalley, Bookouture Audio, Bookouture Publishing, and the author for the ARC and ALC in exchange for an honest review.

I want to thank Daniel Hurst and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this book and give an honest review. My opinion may not be a popular one. I found it to be predictable without the plot twists and turns that I enjoy in a suspense novel. I do appreciate the length of The Doctors Wife as I feel that there is some unwritten “law” to make the authors story 300+ pages.

This was an excellent audiobook! It kept me interested the entire time.

The outrage you’ll feel while listening is pretty impressive. From the cheating, to the overall mistrust and injustice…there’s never a dull moment.

However, sometimes characters aren’t what they seem in this one.

It’ll have you on the edge of your seat as it draw to conclusion.

This one wrapped up nicely but also left the possibility open for a sequel.

Fern knows what her husband Drew doesn’t think she knows about. Those who are in the know hold the power.
This is a wicked read. I snickered at Fern’s plans because sometimes it feels good to side with the wronged, especially when the wronged plots and plans with such finesse.
I guessed partly what would happen and wasn’t surprised when someone else knew what Fern knew too, except it would be costly for that character.
But wait, yet still someone else knows and will Fern be found out??
An entertaining devilish read.
