Brokaw takes us back to his roots, to what some call ‘flyover country’ but which he makes clear is truly the heartland of our country. This was America for most Americans in those days. The book isn’t groundbreaking or epic in any way, just a simple and touching return to things and places still held dear by the legendary journalist.

An interesting read about Tom Brokaw's family roots which happen to be in South Dakota. The reader will come away with a good sense of family values that his family had or what is called prairie values. Those were tougher times, of course, and it is a good reminder of what people really were able to do when the times called for it.

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. It's a good reminder of life on the prairie.

What a lovely story. Mr. Brokaw weaves his families story is such a loving, caring way that sucks you in from page one and to be honest, leaves you wanting a little more by the end. Such a beautiful story of courage, endurance and lots and lots of love, I will admit that there were quite a few tears [for me] at the end and made me miss my beloved Dad even more than normal [he was of the same generation as Mr. Brokaw's parent's and had the same values and I thought of him over and over while reading this book]. What a really lovely read and a great way to spend an evening.

Thank you to NetGalley, Tom Brokaw, and Random House Publishing Group/Random House for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Award winning journalist and author Tom Brokaw returns again to those he calls the greatest generation for the focus of his latest book. In “Never Give Up: a Prairie Family’s Story,” Brokaw focuses on his own family’s struggles and successes as they moved across the country in search of work and a better life.
It is a loving tribute to his family, most especially his parents, Red and Jean Brokaw, who kept the family together with love, hard work, and the “Never Give Up” ethic which gives the book its title. The various episodes of their prairie life are occasionally interspersed with the author’s description of social and political events of the day as they affected Red and Jean.
Fans of Tom Brokaw will be entertained and feel nostalgic for what might be thought of as simpler times, even though the times weren’t alway simple or easy.

This book is a back story into the lives of Tom's parents and grandparents. In this book, we see how his parents were raised (Red's story is just mind-blowing and Jean's is right out of The Great Depression), how they got together, and how no matter what, they Never Gave Up. If you, the reader are interested in things that took place after WWII, you will enjoy Red's experience with the Army Corps of Engineers. He helped build some of the dams in this country, and even while his body tried to fail him, he kept going. This book is an excellent lesson on how you just don't quit.

A well written, loving account by Tom Brokaw about his family’s life on the prairie. His parents seemed like remarkable people. His dad only had a second-grade education but he also he had an incredible work ethic that led him to oversee dams being built in South Dakota. His mom was politically engaged, supportive of Democratic causes and exhibiting a firm moral compass.

This was a short book. I would have preferred it was longer but I was still satisfied with what I read. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

I love the simple style this book was written in, it was very easy to read yet captivating at the same time. You get a sense of what life was like on the prairie during the great depression and subsequent years. The hard times and struggles of every day people trying to make a living and live the American dreams described eloquently by Tom.

Journalist and author Tom Brokaw tells the story of his parents’ lives, in particular the story of his father’s difficult childhood and how he persevered throughout adversity. It was an interesting tale of growing up in the Midwest and West in the early part of the 20th century. Thanks to Netgalley and Random House for allowing me to offer my honest opinion of this book.

Noted journalist Tom Brokaw has penned his latest book, "Never Give Up: A Prairie Family's Story." In this book, Brokaw recounts the life of his father, who goes by the nickname, "Red." Red grew up overcoming many obstacles: working long hours at his family's hotel, the Great Depression, and his time in the war. Red's life is a good lesson in perseverance and resilience.

I thought this book was well written, but wasn't as compelling as I had hoped. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

Tom Brokaw’s memoir, Never Give Up, is an intelligently written depiction of his family background. I found it very informative reading about his parents’ humble beginnings, meeting and subsequent marriage. The history of how Tom Brokaw started in broadcasting and his rise in status as a newscaster is amazing.

My only minor complaint is that the book is so short albeit extremely enjoyable reading. I thank NetGalley and Random House for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication.

This is a wonderful story of how ordinary / extraordinary people have lived through hard times and good with resilient hope and relentless effort to find their best lives.

Tom Brokaw narrates the history of his family from the late nineteenth century focusing on their midwestern families, associates, careers, and lives. As I read this book it reminded me of my family and ancestors, and I thought about what it was like to live through similar times and circumstances. To find a way through what comes our way. His thorough telling of his story made it easy to get a feeling of what it was like.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
