A heartfelt memoir, told in a series of essays. The author is happy to move to a dilapidated farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania with her artist husband. But the births of their two sons, mental health and physical health challenges, and endless financial problems combine to turn their rural paradise into a bit of a nightmare. Hard to read, because the emotions are so raw, and hard to put down, as this author has a real talent for engaging her readers.

In her exquisite collection, Kelly McMasters explores leaving in all its myriad forms, the ways we leave and the ways we're left, with deep insight and grace. Her story is unique, yet I caught glimpses our myself and my life on these pages, felt stirred and shaken by the emotions these beautiful words evoked. I'll be sitting with these feelings, lingering over these words, for a long while. Thank you #NetGalley and WW Norton for allowing me the opportunity to read an early copy of #TheLeavingSeason.

I was under the impression that I would be following the author, looking for or finding the "elusive concept of home" as written in the description. What I found was a young woman who was looking for the elusive concept of herself. I came to a point that I would not finish this book. I thank NetGalley and W.W. Norton and Company for the advance read.

A fascinating and vividly written memoir about marriage, family and identity. I appreciated the heartfelt tone as well as the outstanding writing,.

Four stars. Beautifully written essays about Kelly’s life with her children after divorce. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
