This was an okay read for me. I enjoyed the premise of this book: the setting of an isolated building filled with murder mystery writers encountering their own mystery. While I did guess part of the twist, a part was a happy surprise to me. Unfortunately, I struggled with a lot. The time periods and house seemed like a forced connection, the characters' dialogue and interaction was awkward/unrealistic, and no real action took place to create a sense of suspense. The audio was good, and I would recommend it, but it was a fast listen that would have benefited from more development and length. 2.5 stars

This was a quick, entertaining thriller. A group of author’s are invited to attend a retreat to work on their latest books in peace. It’s a beautiful location, but soon after arrival, strange things begin happening. Soon, they realize they are being targeted, one by one 👀

Honestly wasn't my fav, but considering I dnf'd 6 books in 3 weeks this one kept me engaged enough to finish it. I thought the connection between the 2 story lines was weak, as was the ending and reveal of the motive. While this wasn't a favorite it kept me engaged enough that I'd others by the author.

Writers’ retreats are very trendy right now. I enjoyed this addition to the collection. The mystery was solid and unwound in a steady way, with a few good twists thrown in.

I loved the multiple POV between past and present, and loved the ending.

I received an advanced audio copy. All thoughts are my own.

This was such a fast paced thriller that I loved!! Twists and turns kept coming throughout the story to keep you hooked, and the ending gave me chills! It was just a little hard for me to get into the characters of the other writers on the retreat. I thought it might be hard to do flash backs with the past as an audiobook, but the narrator did a great job! 4 out 5 stars!

Many thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the audiobook!

This was such a wild ride and I loved it. I've read some of Modglin's other books and have enjoyed those as well! I love whatever this author can dish out.

This is such a fast past read. It was enjoyable and kept me guessing all way to the end. 5 writers receive an invitation to a secluded cabin for a quiet writing retreat in turn for their review of the place. The writers vaguely know one another from being at various events, conferences or possibly reading each others books. Once they settle in some start writing and then things start disappearing from their rooms and the cabin. The book does toggle between the writing retreat cabin and the main characters previous years. I didn’t see the twist a the end coming and was shocked. Great quick thrilling read. Many thanks to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the Audiobook. All opinions expressed in this review are my own

This author is rapidly becoming one of my favorites! I really enjoy the way that the story unfolds and how fast paced it is!

This one is short and to the point. It’s so fast paced I couldn’t believe it. It felt like it was over so fast but then there was so much packed into it that it was just fine!

I received an audio copy through NetGalley and the narrator nailed it. There was some weird “sound effects” I guess at the end that I wasn’t sold on but I can’t complain. The suspense was clear, the pacing was great - but I do wish that there had been something to make the dual timelines a bit more clear. On audio it’s easy to forget where you’re at and it’s difficult to figure it out sometimes.

I really enjoyed this though - 4.5⭐️

The characters in this book seemed very interesting at first, but honestly could not hold my attention. There is a slight mystery through most of it but I found it kind of hard to remain interested. Very cool ending, just wish there was more to the beginning.

I have read so many of Kiersten Modglin’s books and I have to say this is one of my favorites. It takes place in the Black Hills of South Dakota, which I loved, being from SD myself. I also love how fast paced it was, I was able to listen to it all in one day.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.

You can always count on Kiersten’s reads to be quick and action packed. We have a tendency to lump mystery and thrillers into one category, but I really believe these are separate, with thrillers having a sense of danger to them. Other than a few pages, this one was more of a mystery to me. And you know reading one of her books, that it is never what it seems.

There were a few twists I saw coming and just as many that I did not. I usually listen to these books and was able to finish it in a day. Karly Robbins did a great job narrating the book and added to the tone set in the book.

If you’re a fan of quick mysteries, I’d listen to this one.

Enjoyable to listen to. Engaging characters. Solid story. Be prepared for the typical “and then there were none”, but worth the read/listen.

I usually really enjoy this author’s books but this one felt a little disjointed for me. It was entertaining and a quick read but it’s not one that’s going to really stay with me. I received a free copy of this book from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Very quick, fast paced listen. The narration was done well but I didn't really enjoy the story. I mean how many times can something go missing. I'll keep trying books by this author.

Five authors, one house in the woods, unlimited food and drink, one week, and one invitation. That's where it all began: with an invitation.

The authors are invited for what seems like a charming getaway retreat to disconnect from reality and chip away at their work. It seemed innocent enough ... until it wasn't.

Items go missing. Various property at the getaway home gets broken and stops working. Is it all a massive inconvenience, or is it something more sinister? And if it is sinister, who would want to harm these seemingly innocent authors?!

It was almost instantaneous that I began enjoying this book. I loved the two storylines being told simultaneously and then the dots between them connecting. I always assume that I have the plot twist figured out with thrillers/mysteries and I am never right! This story proved no differently and I am pleased with the outcome. I will definitely be recommending this to my friends, family, and followers.

If you haven't read this one yet, add it to your list!

This was a fast-paced thriller. I like that they were all writers on a writing retreat. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was great.

Audiobook ARC provided by NetGalley. I enjoyed this audiobook, the story kept me guessing how the book would end. The narrator was new to me and she did good at narrating this book.

This story is about an Author retreat that turns deadly and it will keep you guessing on who is behind the mysterious happenings within the hotel.

I love a good thriller that is set in an isolated location with few options for whodunnit, but where I can't figure it out. A Quiet Retreat is one of the first novels I have read by prolific author Kiersten Modglin, and I can see why people are so addicted to her writing. A Quiet Retreat takes place in a secluded luxury cabin in South Dakota. Five authors of varying degrees of fame have been enticed to a peaceful writers retreat. Ostensibly, they will be able to write their next novels while enjoying the peace and solitude the location offers. Unfortunately, very early on, strange things start happening and suspicion and paranoia turn these authors on each other.....then things go from bad to worse.

This book was a roller coaster ride of fun as readers are teased with various red herrings all the way to the final pages. While the ending was satisfying, there was a bit of a stretch of willing disbelief to it. Either way, I would be recommending A Quiet Retreat to thriller fans and fans of Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None.

I am relatively new to reading Kiersten Modglin, but looking at the list of her books, I am so happy to know that there are plenty of books of hers that I haven't tackled. These will definitely be ones I turn to when I am out of new releases.

A Quiet Retreat is an edgy psychological thriller by talented suspense writer Kiersten Modglin.
Five authors, all mystery writers of varying styles, gather for an all-expense-paid retreat in South Dakota at Black Hills Manor, a house with a dark history. What could go wrong?
Well, many things go awry. There are weird noises, ghostly visions, and belongings, as well as people, go missing. I enjoyed the dual timelines and perspectives. The present day protagonist Blakely is a layered character with a dark past, and the four other writers harbor their own secrets as well. The timeline from the past is suitably tragic and mysterious. The motivations and revelations play out nicely, and the suspense ramps up to an explosive conclusion.
Kiersten Modglin never disappoints, and I liked this dark thriller with its well-placed twists and satisfying wrap-up as the events in the two timelines come together.
The audiobook is excellent, narrated by the talented Carly Robins.

Thank you to Dreamscape Media and NetGalley for the AR audiobook. This is my honest review.
