A legal thriller that quickly goes from tranquil to challenging to a fight for your life drama. Robert Whitlow keeps the reader guessing the final outcome to the last chapter. His legal knowledge and expertise are on full display in this adrenaline fueled read. Robert Whitlow weaves a tale full of misdirection, leaving the reader wondering who the real culprit is. What starts as a normal, mundane week quickly catapults into chaos. The characters pulled me in to the chaos and left me wondering who would make it out. Their flaws made them easier to relate to and the story flow even better. The story lingered with me, trying to think through all the twists and surprises it gave me. I loved all the layers there were to "peel back" before the story ended. While this was my first Robert Whitlow book it most definitely will not be the last! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Robert Whitlow is an author who has made a great impression on me with his writings! This sharp legal story was mixed with murder, suspense, romance and faith, with a strong leading to see things how God sees them. I was especially impressed with Connor, a well-rounded pastor, and was quite interested in reading how he determined what to preach, and how he treated even irritating church members. He becomes involved with counseling a couple who appear to have a rocky marriage. He meets Liz, who is a successful lawyer. She wonders if she was newly hired to her new high-powered legal company for her translation skills. However, her legal skills and abilities are put to work as she is assigned to work with a lady whose husband dies and is discovered to have been murdered. There was no way to stop reading this book because it is so gripping, and the ending was very satisfying!
I very much enjoyed reading this book, compliments of the publisher. The thoughts expressed are my own.

Young paster Connor Grantham is caught between a couple he is giving marriage counseling. It really heats up when the husband ends up dead. In a small town, everyone is trying to marry off the young single pastor. Connor ends up meeting Liz, a recent law graduate who has come to time and team up to find out who murdered the husband.

Fans of legal thrillers will love this book. There is a little romance between the pastor and young aspiring lawyer. Double Indemnity is a quick and enjoyable read. Readers will quickly be trying to figure out how Matt died. They also will be rooting for the budding romance between Connor and Liz. Fans of Robert Whitlow will not be disappointed in this entry. Readers who like romance, suspense or legal thrillers will love this tale.

This book was interesting in the beginning. Unfortunately about 2/3 through it got very slow and repetitive. I just wanted to get through to the end. Did not finish.

Whitlow is a great writer. Every book I have read of his holds your interest from the very first chapter… “Double Indemnity” derives it’s name from a death that occurred from a hunting accident Is that really what happened to Matt? If his death is ruled an accident, then the double indemnity clause in his life insurance would go into effect, essentially doubling the payout. Of course the beneficiary is his wife. The only problem, that only Matt’s pastor knows, is that the couple was having marital problems. They were in counseling when he died. The wife hires a lawyer to make sure she receives the double indemnity that is in the policy. When the young minister is brought into it, he will learn to trust God as never before. I love the way that Whitlow brings Christian faith into his books. There are many twists and turns in this mystery that will keep you turning the pages until the final one. You will not regret reading this interesting book…I was given a copy from the publisher and this is my review.

This was a stunning legal mystery. I didn’t want to put it down.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

I haven't read a legal mystery/thriller in a while and really enjoyed this one. Although it doesn't ever get to a courtroom, it was fascinating seeing the lawyers at work. If real life clients are as high maintenance as Elena, I feel for them.

One of the side stories or focuses of the book is on prayer. Connor's friends are struggling yet their prayer lives are powerful and active. As he interacts with them, his prayer life is strengthened as he learns to expect God to meet with him. It was a good reminder.

There's a solid mystery trying to figure out how and why Matt Thompson died. Was it an accident or is something more at play? I enjoyed watching Connor and Liz's friendship grow in the midst of all the chaos. It was a good read and I'd recommend it.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free e-copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

We are following Liz Acosta, who is a lawyer, and Connor Grantham, who is a pastor. Then there is Elena and Matt Thompson who are married couple receiving marriage counselling from Connor. Elena has approached Liz about possible divorce proceedings asking what her options are, etc. However, Matt dies very early into the book and questions get asked. Was it an accident, murder, or suicide? As the lawyers are working through the case, they discover life insurance policies with a clause called Double Indemnity. Which means if something happened to Matt and it was accidental the beneficiary will get double the life insurance amount, so a 1 million policy could turn into a 2 million policy. But if the death was not accidental and the beneficiary had anything to do with it there would be no payout. Liz and Connor are both trying to help Elena deal with events through their professional relationship with her and through this mutual connection they get to know one another fairly well. Elena could be difficult to deal with, one day she was fine and the next day it was like a completely different person. This was kind of expected as she was dealing with the shock of losing her husband. She became really dependent on both Connor and Liz. Connor is a single male and tries to be very cautious of the way he approaches all females within the church because of that, however Elena is continually pushing boundaries. I found the law side easy to follow once I understood what the Double Indemnity clause meant. I quickly became invested wanting to know if this was a tragic accident or something more. There were quite a few layers to the story because we have the current wife, an ex-wife with kids, and a business partnership. Add in the fact that Elena very dependant on Connor and then suspicious of anytime Liz and Connor are together. It is a small town and Liz attends the church Connor pastors. There is a bit of romance in the story, but it is not the primary storyline more happens in the background and I enjoyed seeing it develop. I really enjoyed the characters, following the mystery and figuring out what was going on. I had my suspicions of who we could trust and who maybe we couldn't. The whole story felt realistic, the way rumors spread throughout a small town, the actions of Connor and the church members. There is a large faith element in this story, we get to really know Connor, see him preparing for his sermons and his passion to be a Godly example to others. I really enjoyed these characters.

Liz Acosta, newly graduated from law school, has moved to the mountains of Georgia for a job. She meets Connor Grantham after being invited to his church by her neighbor. Connor has been counseling Elena and Matt Thompson whose marriage looks perfect to most from the outside but things are not always as they seem. When Matt is killed on a hunting lodge trip the search is on for his killer. As Elena leans on Connor for support suspicion grows. Matt’s e wife and children are thrown into the mix. The more Liz observes the events, the more sure she is that someone is not really what they seem to be.

The person "laid the memo on the corner of the desk. 'I didn't know what double indemnity meant, but it seems simple enough. If "the" death was accidental, I receive twice as much from the insurance companies.'
'Correct.'" (Key words substituted out to avoid spoilers.)

As a pastor, Connor is used to counseling others experiencing trouble. Matt and Elena came to him for input and advice on how to save their marriage. He hoped they were making progress. What he did not anticipate was that their crisis would precipitate on of his own.

Despite his attempts to be careful, Connor finds himself in the middle of a battle. He wants to support his parishioner, but some boundaries need to be drawn. When Liz is asked to be the client's lawyer, everything becomes even more complicated. Can the truth be discovered?

I so enjoy reading Robert Whitlow's legal mysteries. I am not sure that they are quite thrillers because I can read his books at night and still go to sleep. But his books always include intricately woven plots that weave into actual life. I feel like I am watching the stories play out down the street. I like the slower paced, small-town feel of the books. But I also have to keep reading to see how the story is going to play out. There are always many unpredictable elements.

Thanks to NetGalley, I did read an advanced copy of this book. I wanted to read it. All opinions are my own.

Double Indemnity is the first book I’ve read from Robert Whitlow. It was a brilliant who-dun-it, with twists and turns that kept me glued to the pages. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, wow, did I get my detective skills shredded. If you like John Grisham, you will enjoy this book!!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

I hadn't read Robert Whitlow in a long time, but always liked his similar writing as John Grisham. Double Indemnity makes me want to catch up on the rest of his books.
Connor is a pastor of a small southern church who has a new member named Elena who has marriage difficulties. Elena has hired a lawyer, Liz, to help her with divorce proceedings when her husband is killed in a hunting accident. Liz and Connor work together to find the truth about Elena's husband's death and who benefits from it.
The book has a slow beginning and I really disliked Elena and so I put the story away for awhile. But, it quickly got my attention when Connor becomes a suspect in the murder. I love that Robert Whitlow adds the Christian message to his books and in this one, the power of prayer. All legal mystery lovers will enjoy this book as well as those who love a little romance!

Reverend Connor Grantham, a scholarly pastor, serves a church in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in north Georgia. He loves the outdoor life the area has to offer. Unfortunately his life grows more and more complicated in relation to the complications growing in the lives of the couple he is counseling. The wife has a way of making her problems his problems. As she also does for her attorney, Liz Acosta.

At about twenty percent into Double Indemnity, I told my husband, also a Robert Whitlow fan, that this book just didn't feel like a Robert Whitlow novel. It just felt flat. Then around a third of the way in, there it was, Robert Whitlow's voice that I'd been missing. I am not really sure if it was because I finally became engaged with the story or because the author did. From that point on, the story was compelling, and well worth the time invested.

I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of Double Indemnity from Thomas Nelson via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

In the book Double Indemnity, author Robert Whitlow writes about Liz Acosta, who is a new bi-lingual attorney in a small community in the mountains of north Georgia. She is looking for some experience to land her a position with a larger firm in back in her home state of Florida. Pastor Connor Grantham is not sure pastoring is for him. He loves the outdoors of the area and studying, but does not like dealing with all the problems of people. When Liz and Connor are put together and Connor is accused of murder, will their time together lead to a deeper relationship with God and each other?
This is a great read with excellent character development. The message of prayer and the power of God in our everyday lives is great! I would highly recommend this book. This was such a good book! It captured me from the opening pages and kept me engaged throughout.

I loved watching the main characters, Conner and Liz, develop in their faith as the story unfolds. I loved many of the supporting characters as well. Even Liz's boss had more depth than I originally thought.

The story itself was well paced and had some subplots that made it endearing. Lyle and Sarah's story was especially touching on how they impacted Conner and his faith journey.

This story reminded me of the style of writing from Robert Whitlow's earlier books.

Connor Grantham is a pastor who is counseling a couple from his church. Elizabeth Acosta is a recently graduated lawyer. Conner and "Liz" find themselves working together when shortly after Conner starts counseling Elizabeth and Mark Thompson, Mark is killed in a hunting accident and Elizabeth turns to Liz for guidance on the millions of dollars of insurance and settlements that may come her way.. Little does Connor suspect that in small town north Georgia, he would be accused of the murder.

Robert Whitlow has written another well developed, twist and turn suspense novel that also includes a strong faith thread. His legal thrillers always keep my interest, and he explains legalities well enough that it is easy to see the roll they play in his suspense novels. There were plenty of red herrings that kept me guessing which of the many characters could have actually committed the murder.

If you like suspense, I highly recommend this newest of Robert Whitlow's novels.

This is the second Robert Whitlow book I've read, and I enjoyed both of them very much. I like the way he writes his characters and since my career was in the legal field myself, I love following his legal analysis! Even if you figure out the culprit, it's fascinating at how you get to the ending! Connor is a pastor in a small Georgia town in the mountains. He's very smart in many areas and loves nature. Liz is a legal associate who isn't religious and a newbie in the legal field. She relies on her boss a lot on how to proceed in legal matters. Matt and Elena are receiving marriage counseling from Connor but Connor constantly finds it challenging because the two of them are so different and are so demanding of Connor's time, especially Elena. Suddenly, Matt dies in a hunting accident and Elena's behavior is wacko in my opinion! She's all about the money she'll receives, never acts sad and her personality is strange. Pretty soon, Connor and Liz are sucked into Elena's life and boy is she demanding! I was curious as to why they pandered to her all the time and didn't seem to know the word "no"! There is a strong element of faith in this book so be prepared for that. I loved the secondary characters and they brought a lot to the story.

I read Double Indemnity until about midnight when I forced myself to be an adult and go to bed and then thought about the characters for 1/2 hr. or more! I don't know how to classify this book. There are interesting legal angles, mystery, romance, suspense, faith, and strong friendships. I loved the main characters, Liz and Connor, and their supportive friends. I enjoyed reading how Connor the pastor came up with ideas for his sermons and that he was interested in nature and philosophy. The plot has twists and turns with little surprises hiding around the corners. Robert Whitlow is a new to me author. His writing flows well and is easy to read. I would definitely read more by him and recommend him to family and friends.
I received a complimentary copy from the publishers through NetGalley and am sharing my opinion of this very well-written and exciting book.

This is the first book I've read in a little while that I can honestly say I really enjoyed!

The story follows two points of view. Connor, a young, single pastor at a small community church, and Liz, a young single attorney in the same small town in northern Georgia. Throughout the book, both Connor and Liz go through coming to faith/growing faith experiences while dealing with complicated legal situations revolving around what appears to have been a hunting accident.

As a Christian, I want to like and support Christian fiction (sadly this usually isn't realistic). It was refreshing to read Christian fiction that wasn't terrible. It checked most of the boxes for me. Likeable characters, solid character development throughout the story, intriguing plot, and a touch of romance that was not overwhelmingly steamy or wishy-washy were all reasons that I would recommend this book to pretty much anyone. If I had to pick one thing I didn't like, I would say that I felt like the characters were all a little too naïve regarding their interactions with Elena. No spoilers, but she is clearly unstable from chapter one, and I felt like everyone just gave her the benefit of the doubt when most stable people would scream to steer clear.

One of the things I loved most about the book is that it seemed genuinely Christian. I usually dislike Christian fiction because it mostly consists of steamy or cheesy stories with Christian aspects shoved in where they don't fit. This was exceptional.
