This is the second book I have read by Daniel Hurst and both have been excellent. This book had some fantastic twists and I never expected that last chapter! It is an addictive read that I struggled to put down. I listened to the book as an audio book and enjoyed the narration. I'm really looking forward to catching up with this authors other work as he is fast becoming a firm favourite!

After binging The Couple in the Cabin by Daniel Hurst and with a few library audiobooks on my Reserve list (all linked to books or titles that I should have reviewed by now for book blogging purpose!), I decided to risk a quick list to another Daniel Hurst thriller audiobook in the hopes that this would another edge of my seat list and, maybe, that this author might be a new Auto-Buy author...

Dr Drew Delvin and his wife, Fern, have moved out of Manchester and into a small village for a fresh start. Well, that's what Drew has told his wife. But that's not true. For you see, the doctor isn't as honest and trustworthy as he wants you to be. Not with his marriage and not with his job and duty of care either.

He thinks his wife knows nothing. How very wrong he is... and he has no idea what Fern is planning...

Because I had listened to Couple In the Cabin so quickly before I dived into Doctor's Wife, I had no idea what I was going to get myself into. All I knew what that this was going to move at breakneck speed almost off the bat, and that's what happened here. After the first chapter from both Fern and Drew's POV (narrated on the audiobook by Sarah Durham and David Wayman), you realise that both characters aren't exactly nice people and you're not sure who you want to survive the book as, you know almost straight way, one of the them isn't going to survive.

Like I said when I wrote Couple In The Cabin, it is an addictive thriller that you can read on holiday by the pool. Yes, you do have to throw your logical brain out of the window a good way into the book as there are breakneck twists that you go "Wait, hang on..." but you get caught up with the soap-opera twists and you are just waiting to see what happens next. It's one of those reads that I could very easily stay up way past my bedtime to read.

There are things in here that are a little upset and triggering (murder, abuse of power, adultery, stalking behaviour, malpraticice). There was one moment in the book involving Drew and another character where I completely lost my temper with. I was so angry over an action he did that I nearly crashed my car as I was driving home from work.

Yes, some of the twists are ridiculous and yes, this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed myself and I can't wait to read Daniel Hurst's upcoming title, The Holiday Home, in the coming weeks.

Delectable suspense novel. The character development was spot on and I could feel the tension as the story progressed. The audiobook narrators were fantastic and really enhanced the experience for me. The epilogue is what took this from a 5 star book to a 4 star book. It tried to accomplish too much, that really didn’t need to even be addressed. I’m going to pretend the epilogue doesn’t exist and have the story end at the last chapter, in my mind. Fantastic read.

The Doctor's Wife by Daniel Hurst is not unlike many a domestic thriller that you've probably read before, but it definitely unravels in a way you would never expect. We already know from the blurb that Dr. Drew is not exactly as trustworthy as we would hope our own doctor would be. After moving to a new town for a "fresh start," Dr. Drew and his wife, Fern, begin a cat and mouse game full of secrets, cunning, and revenge.

I did get to listen to this book on audio, and undoubtedly the voice actors made this book even more enjoyable. I love when alternating characters have their own voices and I think both actors did a great job carrying their character's voice. They emphasized words in just the right ways, and conveyed attitude and tone perfectly. I found that listening in 1.75x speed was perfect for me. Which made this audiobook go by quickly, so keep that in mind!

Overall, this book was good! It didn't blow me away by any means, but it was enjoyable. I would recommend in audio form, personally.

Sorry but I did not enjoy this book.
I did not enjoy the dual POV on cheating husband and psychotic wife.
I did not enjoy the plot.
I also have more faith in the police department in the UK.
Not for me...
The narrators made a decent work but the storyline is simply too unrealistic...

This is an engrossing page turner with striking imagery and breakneck twists. The author has a crisp writing style which guides readers through this layered and innovative thriller. It was a treat to read and listen to .⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Firstly, this book lives up to the hype of previous reviews in that it is gripping, thrilling and unputdownable. Secondly, I found the first part of the book especially engaging as the narrative was told from two alternating perspectives - that of the doctor (Drew) and the eponymous wife (Fern). This technique worked really well to set the stage for what was to follow.

However, once what followed began to play out, Fern's voice became predominant. I listened to this as an audiobook so whether this was because of the audio narrator (who had a strong Liverpool? accent) or the narrative itself, I found it became grating and somewhat monotonous. By then too, the plot had become largely predictable, so the promised shocking twists and turns didn't hold the impact for me that I'd hoped for.

The plot itself was problematic in some respects. Without wanting to give spoilers, in summary there were, I felt, a few holes, where I questioned the characters' motivations and actions, particularly those of Rory. The police investigation also seemed surprisingly cursory to me, as did the subsequent legal proceedings.

However, it was an engrossing read overall, and it's always intriguing to read about flawed relationships and how the characters resolve their problems, or dig very deep holes for themselves in trying to do so!

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for providing me with an advance review co;py of the book.

The doctor will see you now…

Dr. Drew Devlin and his wife Fern have traded in the big city life for a quiet, secluded village life. It’s a rather sudden, confusing move for no apparent reason. Ha! Come on Doc, we all know the reasons you packed up to move!

And lets’ not forget dear Fern.

Has she stashed away a few interesting secrets of her own?

Whenever I’m in search for a sure-fire, fast and fun thriller I always turn to Daniel Hurst. He has a great recipe for popcorn thrillers and you know you’ll be treated to an amazing twist at the end.

And yes, once again he delivered!

I listened to the audio as I do with all his works. The two narrators once again did a fabulous job!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio

I absolutely loved this audiobook. It was crazy but in a totally great way! It reeled me in from the very beginning, and I love the little twists throughout.

Just ok , I couldn’t get past the narrators accent and it fell a little stale for me. The story writing was good though.

3.5⭐
I listened to this on audio. I did enjoy the story but I did find it a little predictable. Fern and her husband move from the city to a village. Although Fern doesn't want to move she agrees for her husband who we quickly find out wants to move to be closer to his former mistress. The dule pov from fern and drew and getting both sides is interesting to unfold. I'd recommend it for a fast read/ listen.

I found this domestic thriller very interesting, as it was fast paced, and full of suspense and tension.

The story is about Drew and Fern, Alice and Rory. Drew is a doctor who is cheating on his wife Fern with Alice. Rory is Alice's husband. Fern knows about Drew being obsessed with Alice, but she has to pretend that she doesn't. It is all very complicated, with a lot of secrets and lies, action, drama and shocking behaviour.

I was kept engrossed throughout the book, as I was excited to see what would happen next. I especially liked how the book was set in the past and the present, and although the characters were not really likeable, I found them interesting. I liked the psychological aspects of the book, and noting how each character behaved.

The two audiobook narrators were really great at their job, and they portrayed the characters of Drew and Fern superbly.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves family dramas and psychological thrillers, and you won't be disappointed!

Many thanks to the author, narrators, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

Started off as the usual chick lit experience but developed into a more complicated plot, well thought out plot and with a few twists and turns it kept me engaged until the happy ending!. Thank you #NetGalley for the audiobook to review.

The Doctor's Wife is an extremely fast-paced popcorn thriller and works best when you know as little as possible about the plot.

The story is told in alternative timelines between Drew and his wife, Fern. I enjoyed this format as we understand how and why things unfolded as they did. While I found neither Fern nor Drew likable characters, I loved waiting for karma to come for them. The author did a great job of building suspense and tension. I devoured this book in almost one sitting.

I listened to the audiobook. Both narrators did a fantastic job and added a special touch in bringing this story to life.

With this being a thriller, I felt this was sometimes a bit predictable. However, I still enjoyed the reading journey, so I rounded my 3.5 stars to 4.

I quite enjoyed this! I found it really fast-paced (something rather uncommon in the mystery/thriller genre these days) which made for an interesting story. While I found the ending rather anti-climactic the overall atmosphere of the book made up for it. The narrators did really good jobs both at portraying their respective POVs but also the other ones for the prologue and epilogue. Overall, this was a very good book! 3.5/5 stars rounded up!

Thank you for the ARC!

The Doctor's Wife begins with a bang. Almost instantly, the Doctor lays his cards on the table, and his hand is a whopper. I knew from that point on that I would love this twisty domestic thriller. Most of the book is told from two povs. In another couple of chapters, the wife shows her hand, and hers is a doozy. This thriller riveted me with every twist and turn. I was a big fan of Daniel Hursts and an even bigger one now. The narrator gave her usual exemplary performance.

I know when I pick up one of Daniel Hurst’s books, I am in for a fast-paced twisty ride, so imagine my surprise when he lulled me into a slow burn marital drama instead of a twisty thriller. But don’t worry, it all picked up part way through and kept me on my toes. I’ve read quite a few of his books and I liked this change of pace. While I saw the very last twist coming, there were a few that caught me off guard. I have to say I’ve read a few books lately that you don’t have to wait for the twist at the end. You never know where they might happen and I think that’s a plus.

You don’t read his books for the loving characters, so don’t get put off by the unlikeable couple at the center of this. Once things start to happen, you are invested to know the outcome. Not too many details here so as to not spoil anything but trust me you’ll want to know. Their dual narration allows you to know both sides of their marital woes. And at times it seems like Fern is telling you the story as a friend.

I was both listening and reading the book, as time permitted, and I thought both Sarah Durham and David Wayman did an excellent job bringing Fern and Drew to life.

I think of the author’s books as part of the popcorn thriller genre that aren’t too long, move quickly and keep you guessing. If you love that in a book, you should pick this one up.

The Doctor's Wife feels more like a domestic drama/suspense than the gripping psychological thriller it's made out to be in the blurb. There's really way too much given away in the blurb for it to be considered a suspense novel as well - maybe suspense adjacent? That said, I still enjoyed this look behind the curtain, so to speak. It has that kind of vibe for me. It feels a little like being given an inside scoop on what the neighbors are up to, and these neighbors are up to no good.
The story is told from the alternating points of view of Drew and Fern, the doctor and his wife, and you may as well prepare yourself from the beginning because these are not likable people. At the same time, I wouldn't call either of them an unreliable narrator because they're both narcissistic to the point of bragging about things most people would want to keep secret. It's not hard to figure out where things are going, but it all plays out.
The narration is done by Sarah Durham and David Wayman, and while both were new to me, I enjoyed their performances and would listen to them again without any reservations. I feel like they both did a good job with the nuance and tone of the story. I even caught myself rolling my eyes a time or two, much like I would if someone in real life were talking the same way these characters do. That "I'm the smartest person in the room" attitude comes through loud and clear, and it's exactly how I'd think Drew and Fern would sound.
So, The Doctor's Wife isn't exactly what I expected, but I still liked it and enjoyed the listen. If you like a bit of domestic drama, something akin to a Lifetime movie, then I'd suggest giving this one a go.
