Indigo and Levi's childhood was sad to read about. It definitely shaped them into the people that they are today. Trust is hard won in this book. It's also treasured. I really enjoyed reading, Right Where We Belong.

Indigo is in New Zealand because of a type of “Come here and work please” program, so she and two friends immigrated. Oh if this were only real! Their stories are presumably other books in this series.

Indigo has some whack job relatives who have convinced her to never trust handsome men, but really it could mean don’t trust men in general. Levi is the mandatory handsome romance lead, but he doesn’t have the mandatory confidence most romance leads have due to growing up in foster care. Reader Friends- let me tell you, this book has ANGST! If you are needing angst in your life, you will find it here!

Indy, (This is Indigo, but Indy as Levi nick-named her, which is too sweet because she secretly adores it because she never had anyone care enough about her to give her a nick-name) needs a house. Levi comes over and removes a wally (he nick-named a spider) has a plan to just GIVE her land and a hand build her a tiny house, but this sets off lots of deep thoughts, anger, and “I just can’t accept” and ANGST.

Later, they realize they want to do the deed but Levi says “Just one night” and Reader Friends, what does this mean? You’re going to have to read to see what happens next. The ANGST continues.

This was a very good book as it kept me wanting to read more to find out what happens next. I would recommend this book to my friends for their book club.

Indigo finally takes center stage in the third volume of Jackie Ashenden’s Small Town Dreams trilogy, Right Where We Belong.  Ashenden offers up her trademark combination of angst, spice, childhood trauma, life-changing romance and small-town bonding, creating a brew that brings the series to its presumptive close.

Yarn spinner and shopkeep Indigo Jameson does not trust men – especially town lothario and adventure guide Levi King. Indigo and her two friends moved to tiny Brightwater Valley in New Zealand from Deep River, Alaska to help repopulate the tiny town, and among the many people shy but creative Indigo has met thanks to her outgoing friend Bethany, she has taken to Levi the least. Her friends Izzy and Bethany have already found love among the male populace, and now Indigo is the last single friend standing in her group.

The last person she wants to connect with is Levi, but they’re thrown together when Indigo lacks a place to stay. Both are dealing with tough childhoods; Indigo grew up isolated with her Grandma Tillie, whose paranoia about the outside world and anger at men in general have made Indigo mistrustful and introverted. Levi bounced from home to home and family to family in foster care, which taught him to get by on charm and avoid emotionally committing to anyone. He bluntly tells Indigo that there’s no hope they will ever fall in love and not to expect more than a casual relationship with him. Can this completely inexperienced woman and this very experienced man find love?

Right Where We Belong is emotionally involving and frank, but is a very slow burn. Some readers won’t have the patience for the story’s careful pace, but it’s engrossing and good and, as always, burnished by Ashenden’s devotion to angst and psychologically complex romance.

I liked Indigo more than Levi for roughly the first half of the book, mostly because she pushes back hard against the hapless-virgin-falls-in-love stereotype. She has to learn how to build a romantic relationship from the tacks on up, which is hard enough. She also has to figure out if Levi is really the guy she wants to trust with her future.

Levi took a while to grow on me, and it took a while for me to see the little boy traveling from house to house with a sandwich sack of belongings. At first he comes off as your average my-tragic-past-keeps-me-a-womanizing hero. But Ashenden goes one beyond the usual, giving depth and shading to Levi’s angst and trauma, and making his reactions to the world around him feel quite reasonable in the end.

The romance approaches slowly and then wraps its arms around you. It’s sweet and good and tender, and improves both characters as people. That’s really all you can ask for when it comes to a good love story. You just have to be patient with it.

If you’re missing the rest of the Small Town Dreams heroines, they pop in to support Indigo and Levi, as do their husbands. We get life updates for both Izzy and Bethany, and they are their usual sunny selves. And, as always, the wilds of New Zealand pop to life under Ashenden’s pen.

Right Where We Belong plucks a reader’s heartstrings without pouring on the sap, creating a memorable and worthy romance.

A very heartwarming enemies to lovers novel set in New Zealand. Indigo and Levi come into this relationship with a lot of backlogged issues and have to learn how to navigate love. Highly recommended!!

Levi and Indigo have a prickly relationship. Indigo grew up feeling distrustful of men, thanks, in part, to her father abandoning her at a young age. Levi's own childhood leaves him wondering if anything is ever truly permanent. The two become entwined when Levi volunteers to build Indigo her dream tiny home. The chemistry is undeniable and the two cannot say apart.
I predictable love story but with enough complexities to the characters to keep me intrigued.

**I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book.

It was the perfect romance. Not too smutty. Probably like a 1.4 or 2/5 on my spice scale. It was sweet and heartwarming.

Indigo has lived a very sheltered and innocent life.
Levi thinks a "relationship" doesn't go past a night or two of fun

Both have trauma in their past. Both are afraid to get hurt.

Does it all workout in the end or will their pasts cause everything to crumble?

“He was one of those intensely charismatic, engaging assholes, with a surface so slick you’d always find yourself sliding off it.” (quote from ARC)

An incorrigible flirt with a heart of gold meets a shy, guarded heroine in “Right Where We Belong”, by Jackie Ashenden (Sourcebooks Casablanca), a story of how childhood trauma impacts adults’ lives in the most unexpected ways.
Both Levi and Indigo are damaged differently by their pasts. They are so different and yet so alike in some ways.
The hero’s openness and honesty about his horrible experiences as a child is an interesting twist on this type of wounded hero. But there are more layers to reveal beneath the apparent disclosure about the depressing childhood.
The sense of lack of worth and the deep need to belong hidden beneath Levi’s “easygoing and flirtatious” persona are powerful.
In Levi I appreciated watching the things he keeps hidden and the constant need to be accepted and to be part of a family, a community, all wrapped up in the charming envelope.
I could picture in my mind the little boy going from foster home to foster home with his meager belongings in a shopping bag.
I liked watching Indigo fighting the attraction while also being fascinated and attracted by Levi’s undeniable charisma.
Indigo’s lonely, isolated childhood and the hurt she went through allows her to have a special outlook on Levi’s complicated baggage.
The romance between these two is sweet, sexy, and full of surprises and discoveries, highlighted by Ashenden’s writing talent.
I loved meeting again the romantic couple’s friends and partners and Brightwater’s residents, including Mystery, the stray dog which seems to have adopted Levi.
I miss these characters and the beautiful New Zeland small-town already, but perhaps the author will write about some of the secondary characters in future works.

This is a sweet story from Jackie Ashenden and a departure from some of her earlier work. All around, a nice series.

Right Where We Belong is book 3 in the Small Town Dreams series by Jackie Ashenden, however this is the first I read in the series and can be read as a stand-alone but I would suggest reading in order to get a deeper layout of the characters and who’s who. The characters were so well written with really engaging characters (slightly enemies to lovers) and two strong leads. This takes you through all the romance feels, I couldn’t wait for them to get together. I will definitely be reading the rest in the series, I hope they as cute, spicy and beautifully written as this.

Ahhhh! I so enjoyed this story! So much to love!!

This is the third book in the series set in (fictional) Brightwater NZ. I have enjoyed reading the connections between Chase and Izzy, Finn and Beth, and Levi and Indigo in the other books. Levi and Indigo's story started a little like a "sunshine/grumpy" trope for me. But it's not, not really.

These women were new residents to the town, and it's been fun watching each of them find their own HEAs, that they absolutely deserve!
The descriptive imagery of the NZ landscape and setting (based in reality) is interesting and engaging. It was easy to "see" the beauty described. I did a web search for the infamous "Wally" - and I completely agree with Indigo!! Yikes!! 😆

The writing style of this author allows me to connect with the characters, and I loved "hearing" their inner thoughts! It is part of what makes this author one of my favorites. I found this read addictive, and entertaining.

In the description of this author, it states:
"She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who’ve just gotten the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines."

This is 100% true, and exactly what happens to these characters. I absolutely loved reading this book and series. Read in order for the best experience. I am sad to have finished the series, but will be binge re-reading at my earliest opportunity.

I was fortunate to be able to grab an advance copy of this book. I thank Sourcebooks and Netgalley for my free ARC, and I voluntarily leave my review.
