I loved Trevor Wood’s trilogy about the homeless detective Jimmy Mullen. They were a breath of fresh air in the modern crime/thriller market. So seeing he’d written a new standalone was an exciting prospect.

You Can Run is a gripping, fast paced read that keeps the reader turning pages and guessing throughout. Set in a small village in the north of England, it’s a story of one 16 year old girl and a collection of unlikely allies as she races to uncover who’s behind her dads kidnapping.

Its such a fun and easy read, and further shows the Trevor Wood deserves his place at the top table of modern British crime writers.

A taut and gripping cat-and-mouse thriller. When a soldier knocks on teenager Ruby Winter's door it triggers a serious of events that will reveal a terrible truth that could rip her family apart. Reels you in from the first page and never lets up.

A fast paced thriller which sees the usually sleepy Northumberland village of Coldburn set for a rude awakening, Told largely from 16 year old Ruby’s point of view, Trevor Woods does a convincing job of writing from this potentially tricky viewpoint. With a fantastic cast of supporting characters this is a cancel your plans and read in one sitting book.

A young girl named Ruby is on the run with no clue as to why someone might be after her. Her father is captured after killing a man dressed as a soldier that attempts to capture Ruby. Along with her peer named Lucas, Ruby searches for answers while trying to stay out of sight of the men after her. It truly takes a village to protect one girl but who can she trust along the way?

I really liked this one. It had suspense, it had humor, it had heart, mystery.. I was on my toes the entire time and felt like I was Ruby, constantly trying to stay out of sight. At times I even found myself holding my breath. This story is so immersive and fast paced and really well done. I'll definitely have to read more from Trevor Wood and highly recommend this one.

4.5 stars!

Soon-to-be-sixteen Ruby Winter and her reclusive dad Alex lives in a remote house in a small village, with little interaction with those around them and the world at large. One night her dad lets a soldier into the house and after an altercation, she and her dad try to escape. When her dad is injured, he urges her to hide. Soon, paramilitary invade the village. They cut off physical, telephonic and internet access and tell villagers to stay inside while they hunt for an alleged escaped convict, but it is obvious they are searching for Ruby. But why? Who is Ruby and why did they want her? The villagers come to Ruby's aid and are an eclectic, motley bunch. Lucas is a fellow teenager, Danny as an ex military man and the star is Margeret, a cantankerous curmudgeon and tough broad. The story is action packed and never lags, and despite the main character being a teenager it didn't feel too "young adult" thanks to the other villager characters who come to Ruby's aid.

This fresh crime thriller is every bit as fabulous as we've come to expect from Trevor Wood. In this standalone story, 16 year old Ruby finds out in a very abrupt way that everything she believed about her family and her dad Alex is untrue as she has to escape the clutches of a rogue bunch of vigilantes, sent to smoke her out.
A gripping page turner that kept me guessing until the very last page, I loved it (and absolutely adored the character of Margaret, a cantankerous woman in the village!)
Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read it

Oh my word, this book is a heart-pumping, seat-of-the-pants, what-the-heck-is-going-to happen-next kind of a thriller. With a main character who is ballsy and bolshy and just fantastic! I raced through it, loving the juxtaposition of quiet village life and a violent secret.

A stand-alone thriller set in the remote village of Coldburn in Northumberland in midwinter. Told in multiple POV’s, with the main narrator being 16 year old Ruby. Well written this was fast paced and quite a quick and easy read. Some great characters, particularly amongst the villagers - Danny and Lucas but my favourite was the redoubtable Margaret who may be old but she is happy taking on all comers and her mind and tongue are as sharp as ever! She’s a gem or a character.

Briefly, Ruby is due to celebrate her 16th birthday along with her Dad Alex. They live a reclusive life so she’s surprised by a knock on the door. Alex is confronted by a man holding a rifle and demanding to take Ruby. Following a fight Alex stabs him but not before being shot in the shoulder. Ruby escapes, pursued around the village by an increasingly brutal group of men who are hunting her. Ruby finds herself working with a group of the most unlikely villagers to find her Dad and escape from the intruders.

Ruby is a feisty girl and it’s clear that there are secrets in her background that Alex has kept from her. Quite a gentle read, for gentle don’t read cozy because it’s definitely not that, but it is full of quirky characters and slightly over the top events.
A brilliant read with great characters, an enjoyable plot and action packed. I loved it.

Congratulations to @TrevorWoodWrite on the publication of his new Book, YOU CAN RUN. Fans of Trevor's Jimmy Mullen series will be happy to know that once again, Trevor has created an intriguing plot with engaging characters.

Ruby and her father, Alex live in a small remote village. Her father has always encouraged her not to trust strangers or post anything personal on social media. When Ruby posts about her upcoming 16th birthday on Facebook, she inadvertently draws attention to their village. A soldier comes to their home looking for Ruby. A fight breaks out between the two men, Ruby rushes into the kitchen. She is shocked to see that her dad has stabbed the soldier. The wounded soldier retaliates by pointing his gun at Ruby and Alex ends up taking a bullet.

Ruby runs to the public phone box to get an ambulance for her father. From there she sees a group of soldiers pull up to their house with an ambulance. They leave the house with the body of the deceased soldier and a wounded Alex.

In her quest to find out what happened to her dad and why the soldiers were after her, Ruby ends up getting support from the village underdogs; a nosy neighbor, a loner schoolmate, a former soldier and a hard drinking mechanic. It truly takes a village to save a child.

A gripping read from start to finish. . Couldn't put this book down once I'd started it. Alex Winter and his daughter Ruby's lives are turned upside after a knock on the door and a "soldier" asks questions. What ensues is a fast paced, twist turning gripping read. The interspersed humour is light relief from the tense plot. I had no idea how it was going to end. A definite 5 star read for me

I loved all the three Jimmy Mullen series by this author despite them including the oddest lot of heroes imaginable. So when a new Trevor Wood book came available to request I leapt at the chance to read it and yet again I was not disappointed. I’m still sorry there are no more Jimmy Mullen books but I do also think a move away has given a fresh impetus for Wood to delight.
Never the characters you think you would love but always they win you over.
Oh I love the originality of Mr Wood and now can’t wait for his next offering.

It takes but a minute before the action starts!
Teenager Ruby lives with her dad, Alex, it seems neither are terribly sociable with the other inhabitants of their small English village, Alex in particular keeps to him self.
Next thing we know there is a man on their kitchen floor and he's not very well at all, fact is, he's been stabbed! Ruby is told in no uncertain terms they must go, and go now.
Next comes another act of violence, and, along with some other hair raising and eye widening events makes it obvious that our Ruby is the target! This for me was the most intriguing hook in the story, the girl was but 16 years old, what on earth could she have done or what did she know that held such value for her would be captors?
As the story unfolds the tension rises, you do not want to miss this one!
This book really held my attention, from beginning to end
Thanks to NetGalley and Quercus

Ruby Winter, a sixteen year old girl, has been living the quiet life with her dad, Alex, in the sleepy village of Coldburn in Northumberland. Alex is somewhat of a recluse, and the Winter family very much keeps to themselves. But one knock on the door will change all of that, and Ruby will be forced to rely on the help of villagers she’s never even met to stay safe.

Ruby is very much supposed to be the main character of the story, although some of the village residents get to have their own point-of-view as well. It turns out Ruby is massively important to someone, and anything goes in getting her back. So much so that a para-military group of some sort has no qualms in closing the village off and telling the residents to stay in their houses. Needless to say, this doesn’t go down well. These villagers do not take kindly to outsiders, or intruders. This is a village that is slowly losing its way of life due to an abundance of second home buyers turning half the village into a AirBnb hotspot, and these people will not take any crap lying down.

And just like that, main character Ruby drops off into the secondary category. The villagers banding together to help her are infinitely more fun and interesting to hang out with, and they blow the character of Ruby right off the pages. There’s her schoolmate, Lucas, who turns out to be far more reliable than she expected. Although not in matters of cooking. There’s Danny, ex-millitary, who may be getting old but still knows what’s what. But the one who steals every scene she’s in is Margaret. Founder of the Neighbourhood Watch, she’s known as being extremely nosy, but she’s also smart as a whip and takes no crap from anyone. And boy, did she make me laugh!

Danger lurks around every corner, and yet I never felt the tension reached boiling point. ‘You Can Run‘ is definitely action-packed, although it lacked the thrill in thriller. There is never a dull moment though, and the pace is spot-on. However, I do admit that I was often left to think maybe the target audience was a tad (okay, a lot) younger than I am. While at times a little gritty, because it’s obviously an “us against them” kind of situation, some things just seemed that little bit too convenient, and a little too predictable. Maybe a bit too much neatly wrapped up in a bow.

That said, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘You Can Run‘ and raced right through it. It’s definitely an entertaining page-turner and an easy, quick read. I understand this is far different from Trevor Wood’s Jimmy Cullen series, but I’m dying to dive into that as well, and I look forward to whatever comes next from this author.

I am a huge fan of this authors Jimmy Mullen series, and this fast-paced action-thriller is a bit of a gear change!

Set in a small, almost deserted village in Northumberland, Ruby is about to turn 16 and is lookng forward to a small party with a few friends. Her dad Alex has always encouraged her to avoid social media and not get too involved with the other locals, so she finds it a bit strange that he let's a stranger into their house one night. Creeping downstairs to eavesdrop, what she hears is going to change her quiet life forever.

This story took off like an absolute rocket from about 3 pages in and, apart from a small-ish dip in the middle, it didn't really slow down! It was very difficult to put down at thar pace, and when you add in thr great bunch of characters, nosy neighbour Margaret in particular, you are honestly in for a great ride!
