The Surgeon is a standalone thriller by Leslie Wolfe.

Wow! This fast read had me on the edge of my seat and gave me the creeps (in a good way). Just when I thought I had the mystery figured out there was more revealed and more left to be uncovered.

I loved how twisted this book was. The characters were engaging and absolutely fascinating!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Thank you so much to the publishers and to netgalley for my early copy of The Surgeon in exchange for my honest review.

Dr. Anne Wiley is fighting to save a patient that fatally suffers an aneurysm until she sees his face and recognizes him from a past she would like to forget. The port wine stain on his forehead has haunted her for years. She feels conflicted as she doesn't know if what she has just done makes her a murderer or if she truly just made a mistake. She can't help but ask if his showing up on her table was a pure coincidence or fate.. Under scrutiny by her peers, her boss and further investigations, Anne continuously revisits the day while trying to forget a worse memory from her past. Is Anne as innocent as she claims to be or a murderer?

This was shocking and twisty and everything you could ever want out of a psychological thriller. It was like Grey's Anatomy on steroids. The story is told from two angles. Anne's perspective along with a collection of memories from her past that come back in waves and from an attorney hell-bent on pegging Anne for murder.

This was my first time reading a Leslie Wolfe novel and I'm definitely looking forward to reading more of her work! 4.5/5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

A surgeon loses her first patient on the table and she admits that she doesn't want to save the patient - this is the preface of " The Surgeon" which intrigued me enough to choose it for reading. What motivates a surgeon, a very skilled one who has never lost a patient on the table, to opt to not save her patient's life - this was the burning question on my mind when I started reading the book.

The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe is not the regular psychological thriller containing countless twists, just for the sake of shocking the readers, which don't add value to the story. The story begins with senior surgeon Dr. Anne Wiley suddenly recognizing the patient who is on her operating table and deciding to stop resuscitation when his heart doesn't start as it is supposed to. What made her do that? Who is the man? What are the consequences for her, after the first death on her operating table inspite of the countless previously successful ones?

Leslie Wolf takes us through a thrilling and chilling tale of intrigue, betrayal and hatred while telling the story of Dr. Anne. She pulls the reader completely into Anne's world where we despair, fear, hate and love along with her. The many characters have their own agendas and a few of them are downright scary.

All of these put together make up for a completely engrossing and at times disturbing read that you will not forget very soon. Having said that, I must say I did feel one character's reasoning and thoughts made the least sense to me. However, I still had the most thrilling experience reading this book and couldn't read it fast enough.

The synopsis of this book is very enticing a surgeon with a secret meets the person who could destroy them on their table scalpel in hand, the story has lots of twists and turns some are predictable some are very clever indeed, where it falls down are the characters most of whom are rather unlikeable.
The surgeon is a good book with a strong idea and a well written story, it would be a great accompaniment to any holiday or a reading night at home.

Anne is a cardiologist who, when performing a surgery one morning to remove a heart aneurysm, loses the patient. Anne has never lost a patient in the twelve years that she has been a doctor. When she see the face of the man that died on her table, she is overwhelmed with nervousness and anxiety. She didn't recognize him before when she saw him for his initial consultation and he had a beard but now that it's gone, she remembers him from his distinct facial birthmark. Who is he, and could she have tried harder to save him? This patient is linked to her past and there is a very good reason why she may have wanted him dead. #lesliewolfe #thesurgeon #netgalley #bookkouture #tea_sipping_bookworm #goodreads #getlitsy #thestorygraph #bookqueen #bookstagram #medicalthriller

I really enjoyed this story. Right from the start, I knew I had something special in my hands. I was glued to the surgery and the events leading up to the death of the patient. I had so many questions. Why was the surgery unsuccessful? It definitely sounded like it wasn’t meant to be complex. Who was the patient and what did he mean to the surgeon? The tension builds up even more when the investigation began and the DA with a vengeance came in.

I was equally invested in the dual narrative alternative between Anne and Paula. They were both so driven as career women, yet so different. I was rooting for Anne but also couldn’t wait for Paula to crush and burn and it was fun seeing both their stories’ unfolding. All the twists, turns and drama had me at the edge of my seat.

This was a fast-paced, highly captivating read. The final twist was the icing on the cake. This was such a fantastic thriller that checked all the boxes for me.

Dr Anne Wiley has never lost a patient on the operating table. But when she recognises the man in front of her, she freezes and gives up his resuscitation. Would he have died anyway or did she kill him?
The Surgeon is a psychological thriller set in America. There are some graphic surgery descriptions which some readers may be sensitive to.
Anne is a dedicated doctor and surgeon. Incredibly, she has never had a patient die during one of her operations. So her team, and even she herself, are surprised when she gives up the resuscitation of a patient. His heart hadn't given any sign of damage but just won't start. She looks down at his face and recognises him from her past, then immediately calls time of death. After the op she battles with herself about whether she did the right thing or if she could have saved him. Then an investigation into his death and her behaviour is launched...
The majority of the book is written from Anne's first person perspective so we can see her dilemma and emotional anguish. The rest of the book is written from the third person viewpoint of Paula, a determined lawyer and investigator. She is hugely ambitious and is having an affair with the prospective new mayor of the city. About a third of the way trhough the book, these women's connection is revealed although there are more twists to follow...
There were plenty of twists, tension and drama to keep the reader entertained. The moral dilemma is fascinating as Anne ponders her culpability in the death. I felt the initial link between Anne and Paula was obvious but I was totally engrossed in finding out how events would play out. The ending was a bit too open ended for my liking but this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book overall.
The Surgeon is a tense and entertaining medical and psychological thriller.

The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe had me flipping the pages at record speed. I had a lot going on while reading this book and could only read for bits at a time, but found myself telling people I was with about the storyline and how gripping it was. I loved this book. If you enjoy a medical thriller then this is a book you must read! Dr. Anne Wiley is a respected and talented heart surgeon and she has never lost a patient she operated on until now. Anne is operating on a man that she's only seen a couple of times in pre surgery consults and he had a beard and wore a baseball cap both times. It's not until she sees him at the end of surgery that she recognizes him. He's now clean shaven and has no ball cap on. He's the man her sister was terrified of when they were kids. At the end of the surgery there's s point where the patient comes off the pump and the surgeon injects saline to get his heart beating on its own again. Anne does everything by the book but calls time of death 24 minutes after efforts to resuscitate don't work.

Anne's husband, Derrick, is a lawyer who has hopes of becoming the next mayor. He's doing all he can to make that happen. Paula Fuselier is a lawyer with the state's attorney's office and she has been having an affair with Derrick for 7 months. Paula wants Derrick to leave Anne for her. Derrick has no plans to do that as he's been happily married to Anne for years and married into a lot of money. Anne's mom lives with them and treats Derrick like the son she never had, including funds for his mayoral campaign. Paula is on a rampage to get Anne and she will stop at nothing. When Derrick mentions in bed that Anne lost her first patient on the table, Paula pays close attention. She now thinks she has something to bring the perfect Dr. Wiley down. She is going to prove that Anne killed this patient on purpose to get her out of Derrick's life.

Anne is distraught after losing her first patient and is having a hard time letting it go. She keeps wondering if she could've done more if she hadn't recognized the patient? When Paula comes to her office saying the state's attorney's office is looking into the case, Anne gets panicked. Who notified the state's attorney's office and why? This was her first death in 12 years!! She did everything by the book and she has no idea why Caleb Donaghy's heart didn't restart! The anesthesiologist that was with her during surgery is a bully and tells everyone that will listen that Dr. Wiley is incompetent and that she stopped trying to save the patient too soon. Dr. Wiley is notified by her boss that there will be an official inquiry into the death just like there is with every death. She will have to report her side of things to the board and they will make a determination. Will Anne be found innocent? Will anyone find out she knew the patient and had reason to want him dead? Will Anne find out her husband is having an affair with the same woman coming after her? Will Paula find anything to convict Anne?

This book will keep you up reading and the tension just builds and builds. I love thrillers that take your breath away and this book does just that! I rate The Surgeon 4 stars and recommend you pick it up asap. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Surgeon in exchange for a fair review. #TheSurgeon

I couldn’t put this one down. Who do we trust more than a good hospital staff and surgeon? Isn’t it’s everyone’s worst nightmare someone may not have the best intent who is in charge of our life? Gripping, thrilling, and worth the read.

I would like to thank NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing me to read and review a pre-release copy of this book.

I absolutely fell in love with this book! You get two different viewpoints with this one, which I find so intriguing. I feel like when you can get the story form multiple characters, it really paints the whole image. To know both sides and thought processes is something I really enjoy.

While being from two different viewpoints, the story focuses on the main character Anne. She is an experienced cardio-thoracic surgeon. She has the picture perfect life, the thriving career, the stunning husband. She has it all. But, she also just lost her very first patient. The trouble is, she recognized him. Not at first, but was it enough for her to be the cause of his death?

The jaw-dropping storyline created by Wolfe will keep you turning the pages to know what happens next. It is filled with twists and turns I was not expecting. The excitement and mystery of it all flooded throughout the book. The unraveling of this story was phenomenal. Once I started this book I couldn’t put it down. It is completely binge worthy!

I’m a huge Grey’s Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder fan. Really, I’m just a huge Shonda Rimes fan! In the two viewpoints, you get both a doctor and a lawyer. This peaked two of my personal top interests to watch/read about. So if you are like me, you may find that interesting as well.
I know that after reading this novel I want more from this author! I will definitely be checking out more of her stuff. I think it was so well written and the entire book kept my interest. While reading, I laughed, I cried, I even got pretty shocked at times. I have to give this one 5 stars! I highly recommend reading The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe.

Dr Anne Wiley is a 41-year-old prominent surgeon in Chicago, who never lost a patient before. Until that fateful day.

Following surgery, Caleb Donaghy’s heart wouldn’t start. Anne and her team attempted resuscitations, but when she saw his face, she cut them short and called the time of death. She recognised the patient as someone from her past…

Paula Fuselier works for the State Prosecutor’s Office. She’s ambitious, relentless, and her reputation precedes her. When Paula discovers that Anne has lost a patient and that something might not be quite right, she is determined to ruin the surgeon’s life and career. The question is – why?

I really enjoyed this tense psychological thriller.

It features two successful and professional women, whose lives collide. At the beginning, Paula was so self-assured and in control, however, towards the end of the book, she started to unravel and appeared almost unhinged.

Anne, on the other hand, started off as a little bit meek, but as the story progressed, she gained confidence and her ability to stand up for herself gained much needed momentum.

Overall, it is a great tale of revenge and power, featuring a couple of wonderful twists.

Thank you to Bookouture for approving my NetGalley request to read and review this title.

Oh my, I was hooked from the start. A heart surgeon with a perfect record of saving her patients that loses her first one? Then we learn she recognized the patient. I wanted to know who, what, when, where and how. Was it an accident? Did she do it on purpose? How does she know him? I love when an author can stun me and in this one, she did. I won’t go into any details because of potential spoilers, but I am usually able to guess and limit things down to a few different guesses on the outcome and love when the outcome is something other than what I have suspected at some point.

I didn’t like the main character, Anne. Yet I still was invested in the story. That is a fine line to walk and this was well done. The complex story kept me guessing. As soon as I had an idea where it was headed, there was another layer or twist to change my thinking.

I both read and listened to this one, as time permitted and loved Gwendolyn Druyor’s narration. I think this is my first listen to one of her audiobooks and she kept me interested in the story.

I can’t wait to read Leslie Wolfe’s next novel and think if you like complex, unpredictable mysteries, this one is worth your time!

Really enjoyed reading this book. This book was really hard to put down for me. Kept me up till late at night to finish it. The plot twist was really really quite surprising.
Regret that I didn't request for the audiobook version of this. Would've been great in audiobook form.

Overall its a great read! looking forward to reading more books from this author.

Medical thrillers are one of my favorite genres to read. This one did not disappoint! The surgeon is faced with a decision that she makes in the spur of the moment and the story unfolds as that decision plays out. The twists were unexpected and kept me guessing. I did feel like the end wrapped up quickly, but overall this was a great read. Thanks for the early ARC.

The Surgeon by Leslie Wolfe is about a surgeon who lets a patient die because she doesn’t want him to live. The death brings investigators to solve what really happened. Is this one mistake going to risk Anne’s career or can she cover her tracks?

I thought The Surgeon was an okay read. I think because it’s a softer thriller than what I normally do, a lot of the twists were easy to decipher which did let the book down for me.

Sadly I didn’t connect nor felt anything for the characters but I was able to understand their thinking process and actions. Which I think makes up for the unlikeable characters.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the digital copy of The Surgeon for reviewing purposes.

I don't want to give a plot summary and give anything away, since I was genuinely surprised by some of the twists and want other readers to feel the same. However I will say that I really enjoyed this suspenseful novel with a likeable heroine and a vicious antagonist out to bring her down. The how and the why are what make up the meat of this story.

This is the story of a surgeon facing an impossible decision when she learns the identity of the patient on her operating table. Twisty and powerful, this is the best type of read!
