Thank you so much to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for access to an eARC in exchange for my honest review!

I read one of these poems every night with my sister and my niece and nephews, and honestly, I was so in love with it the whole time. The kids always want us to read more to them, which was to be expected, but some nights, I was the one who wanted to do more than one poem, to keep it going long past our expected bedtimes. These poems were sweet and emotional and evoked so many amazing memories in me and in the kids. I really adored the opening to each poem either being a sort of lesson on how to write the specific kind of poem or on ways to recite the poem or connect with the story its telling. Honestly, I would recommend this book for anyone with kids, hands down, and even for anyone who just has a love for poetry. Just because they're written for kids doesn't mean they aren't fun for anyone to read and enjoy!

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This is a good book for kids who like poetry. It is also good for reading aloud as a group.

Thanks NetGalley for the preview!

Such an important poetry book for our kids to read. I especially loved the emphasis on how learning to say no is important and an okay thing to do. That’s a hard lesson to teach and learn. Definitely going to check out the rest of the series asap!

Thanks to Netgalley and Quarto for the ARC of this!

My kids and I enjoyed this book of poems together. I liked that each one had a little description of the type of poetry as well as ideas for the child to start their own poem in a similar style. The art was sparse but cute.

Joseph Coelho excels again with this new book of beautifully illustrated poetry. Covering a broad range of subjects relevant and engaging to children, his word choices, structure and wordplay make the poems a delight to read out loud. I love the accessibility of poetry compared to novels and the engaging artwork will draw young readers in and create immediate interest. I liked that this was a short, quiet exclusive collection of poems that had clearly had a lot of time and effort spent on them so each one could be celebrated rather than missed or passed over. Joseph Coelho uses so many devices in his work: alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors, rhythm, rhyme and humour - it's the perfect tool to teach language in the classroom. This is going to be a stunning book in the flesh.

Title: Courage Out Loud
25 Poems of Power
Written by: Joseph Coelho
Pub Date: 18 Apr 2023
Publisher: Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions, Wide Eyed Editions
Genre: Children's Fiction | Poetry

The role of this book it a well intentioned one. To teach children how to be themselves and how to adjust their changing lives and society.

For the most part I believe Coelho has done a wonderful job with this work. However there are a few fault in my opinion.

One of the bigger problems for me was the use of difficult words, which may enhance a child's vocabulary but might actually put a child off the book, It would also mean that the child, depending on their reading age, can not read the book themselves.

While I also like the authors notes I think they would have been better placed either before or after the poem rather than under the heading.

Regardless this was an enjoyable read and something I would gladly read to my, soon to be, five year old niece.

Courage of loud by Joseph Coelho and Daniel Gray-Barnett is an illustrated children's poetry collection about courage and facing your fears. The 25 poems have tidbits of wisdom that I feel can be very important to teach children, life the poem that teaches children that it is okay and even healthy to cry sometimes.

I liked that before many of the poems, there's a section talking about the type of poem and how to write your own. It encourages children to interact with the world and create something.

While i love the idea for the collection, I felt like some of the poems fell flat or had awkward lines at times. Despite that, I don't think children are as picky to me when it comes to poetry, so I definitely recommend this to those who want to teach kids to face their fears and be courageous.

I adore this series of poetry books - I use them extensively in the classroom due to their range and accessbility.

A eclectic mix of styles which ultimately pull together to show children the power of their voice - very much needed - an absolute hit.

This poetry anthology is all about standing up for yourself, loving who you are and not being afraid to be your true self. Filled with many positive affirmations and great mental health strategies, this book is perfect for teachers or families looking to foster these kinds of beliefs in their children. There are some more challenging words at times (this is often the case when trying to make rhymes), but I think that these poems could easily be enjoyed with adults, so if there are complex words or phrases it would be something the child could clarify with an adult. The illustrations are interesting and will also help with comprehension. I would recommend this book for children in the age 5-11 range. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the chance to read and review this book!

This is a remarkably adorable and inspiring poetry collection for children. It's about finding courage in diffent and ordinary ways like making friends. making art, and saying no. The illustrations were perfect for each poem and will be loved by children. The kids in my life all loved this book!

This is another brilliant book from the inspirational Joseph Coelho. I loved the little introductions to the poems with explanations about the types of poem or tips to encourage readers to write their own. The message of courage and grit running throughout the book is such a positive and helpful one and hopefully young readers will be encouraged to be brave and find their voice through poetry.
This is a must have for the classroom!

I have to applaud the mission of this book above the actual quality of the poetry. (a couple of the poems were pretty good, but most were just okay within the parameters of being for kids) I really think it was ingenious to add ways for children to interact with each of the pieces before each poem, I'm sure younger readers will find the exercises enhance their reading /writing of poetry.

The poetry is honestly tertiary to 1. teaching children about poetry 2. getting children to be excited about poetry and 3. getting children to try and write their own poems! All of these goals, I think this book would be fantastic at.

"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."

Great book that includes and describes may different types of poetry. Each poem has it's own activity attached to it, which is rather fun . I liked the idea of drawing your own Furry Sorry after reading the poem. It seems very therapeutic.
Fall down Three Times get up Four is another favorite.

A great fun book.

Courage Out Loud by Joseph Coelho is a stunning new collection of poems all about feeling afraid but being brave enough to push through them.

Each poem is preceded with some information about why the poem was written, information about the structure of the poem, or an invitation to have a go at writing your own poem. My favourite poem was one where saying “No” to some things made saying “Yes” to others much more enjoyable. I think it will resonate with children and adults alike and it provided a really clear message about the power of “No”.

Each poem is accompanied by beautiful illustrations by Daniel Gray-Barnett, matching the themes perfectly.

With the recent, rather sad, report on the use of poetry in Primary classrooms, this book would be an amazing kick start to any teacher who wants to start to introduce it a little more. The poems are accessible for young children and the suggested activities are good and could easily be incorporated into PSHE or writing lessons. I will be using some as whole class guided reading texts to support our Feelings topic and I know the children will love them.

Courage Out Loud by Joseph Coelho is published by Quarto Publishing Group on 18/4/23.

Although the topic of this book is admirable, the poems themselves are unfortunately not very engaging or interesting for children. The rhyme scheme is questionable for many of the poems and not very fun to read aloud.

Everything Joseph Coelho touches is gold, and this is no different. An uplift, empowering, and relatable collection of poems which will touch the hearts of many children. The vibrant and energetic illustrations make it even more enjoyable. The poem about crying was my favourite, but I can see many children reading or being read any of these poems and feeling a little less alone and afraid.

I swear that one of these days NetGalley will break my bank and here is another one that is going into my Amazon shopping list.

I love this book. It is more than just a list of poems. I love how Joseph Coelho put in little notes at the beginning of each poem to inspire children to write poems. This is a perfect book for teaching poetry.
