Madison is a law student at Harvard. She loves her life and does everything by the book. Then her brother gets arrested and charged with narcotics. Madison doesn't know what to believe. Danny has been a screw up since they were kids but this is a serious charge and her mom begs for her help. Madison takes a class with the judge that sentenced Danny. Kathryn Conrad has been her hero for ten years. So when Kathryn asks her to apply for an internship in her court Madison doesn't hesitate. Its a dream come true plus she can look into Danny's case. A small white lie she tells in the interview leaves her vulnerable and Madison gets much more than she bargained for.
This was a fast paved thriller that keeps you guessing till the end. All the characters in this one are perfectly fleshed out and written in precise detail. It was so good.

I’ve read all of Michele Campbell’s novels and once again her writing held my attention to the very last page! The novel follows Harvard law collegiate Madison who studies under her favorite professor and mentor, Judge Kathryn Conroy. Kathryn offers her an internship which she accepts.. then.. receives a call that her little brother has been arrested and is forced to plead guilty to a crime he didn’t commit. In jail, her brother reveals something shocking about the Judge presiding over his case.. who just happens to be Kathryn! Of course Madison is shocked and wants to find out if there’s any validity to it. She keeps his incarceration secret from everyone including Katherine.

I liked the direction this story played out, especially how it shows Kathryn’s past pre-arranged by others for their own benefit, not hers. Loved the great character development + suspense - what a fantastic read! 4.5 stars Pub. 10/3/23

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary arc. All opinions are my own.

I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

Michele Campbell is a graduate of Harvard College and Stanford Law School and a former federal prosecutor in New York City who specialized in international narcotics and gang cases. A while back, she said goodbye to her big-city legal career and moved with her husband and two children to an idyllic New England college town. Since then, she has spent her time teaching criminal and constitutional law and writing novels. She has had many close female friends, a few frenemies, and only one husband, who - to the best of her knowledge - has never tried to kill her.

This was a complex web with deadly twists, turns, and a massive cast of characters. I enjoyed this book. It was a reasonably fast-paced read, and I found the characters well-developed.

There were certain moments when it felt like the storyline could have been tightened up a bit, but I didn’t mind the way the story unfolded.

This was told in dual perspectives, with varying timelines. I found the way the story melted together to encompass everything brilliantly.

I would read another thriller from Campbell. She has an easy-to-read writing style, and I enjoyed how she crafted her characters.

Michelle Campbell's "The Intern" earns a pulsating 4-star rating from me! Picture this: Madison, a brilliant law student at Harvard, faces a harrowing twist when her brother, Danny, is ensnared in drug charges. His claims of innocence, pointing fingers at everyone from his attorney to the judge, set the stage for a spine-tingling tale.

When the judge presiding over Danny's case happens to be Madison's own law professor, Judge Conroy, an unexpected opportunity arises. Madison seizes a coveted internship in Conroy's chambers, aiming to unearth the truth behind her brother's ordeal. Little did she know, this decision would plunge her into a web of darkness within Conroy's murky world.

Campbell's thriller had me hooked from the get-go, keeping me teetering on the edge of my seat until the very last page. Kudos to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC, allowing me to delve into this riveting narrative in exchange for my honest thoughts!

I love Michele Campbell so much. I love her writing.

Her new one did not disappoint. This one is a legal thriller about a young woman who begins to work for a possibly crooked judge.

I really liked how she told the story from Madison and Kathryn’s point of view. Both characters were interesting.

I really liked how the story wrapped up. I thought it was the perfect ending.

In "The Intern," a hard-to-put-down, fast-paced novel, author Michelle Campbell provides readers with great entertainment. Madison is a Harvard law student trying to balance school and family commitments. She is delighted when Judge Conroy, the person who most influenced Madison to pursue law, invites her to apply for an internship. Her excitement, however, is tempered when Madison's brother, an accused drug dealer, claims the Judge is corrupt.

While Madison uses the internship to both prove the judge's corruption and her brother's innocence, it becomes clear that the Judge also has. alterior motives for giving Madison the internship. Hence the game of cat and mouse begins.

Although the story may at times be predictable, it is wonderfully written, exciting to read, and hard to put down. It beautifully weaves the stories of the two main characters together.. It is perfect for anyone looking for a fun, enjoyable read.. Than you Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the ARC

Madison is living the life she always wanted - she is a Harvard law student and one of her professors is none other than her idol (a judge she heard give a lecture when she was younger). When her professor invites her to apply for an internship with her, Madison can't believe it. However, Madison has a secret - this professor was the judge in her brother's trial. Madison decides to apply anyway and not tell the judge her secret. What's the worst that can happen? Her brother accuses the judge and police of corruption but Madison doesn't know if she believes him. The judge invites Madison out for dinner where they bond over similar life experiences. The judge even invites Madison to stay at her place to cat-sit while she is away. Any intern's dream, right? However, Madison quickly learns that there is way more to the judge than she ever could have imagined.

I'm a Michele Campbell fan. I absolutely love the writing style. The chapters were the perfect length and I wanted to read more. The twists were well timed and absolutely amazing. I was questioning almost every single character and I could have never guessed what was really going on. The back and forth between Madison's point of view and the judge's were fantastic. This was an absolute great read and I want to read more by this author!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the chance to read this book for free. This is my honest review.

This was a typical thriller. I usually enjoy a quick, thrilling story. This one was good, but not a favorite. I find that I enjoyed the reading experience, but honestly couldn't tell you what happened now. I read so many thrillers this happens more often that I want. If you like domestic thrillers then definitely pick this one up. I am curious to see everyone's opinions.

Madison Rivera has worked hard to pull herself out of her humble upbringing and stay on track to achieve the life she dreams of. Since her aunt helped her enroll at Catholic Prep and saw a former student and current judge, Kathryn Croft, speak, Madison has known she wants to follow in her footsteps, from undergrad and law school at Harvard to a successful career as a lawyer. Not only is Madison taking a course at Harvard Law taught by Justice Kathryn Conroy, but she’s also been invited to apply for her open internship. Madison couldn’t be happier about the internship if only she weren’t harbouring some secrets. Secrets from her past could cost her the internship and the degree she has worked hard for. It turns out that Madison’s brother Danny took the fall for a drug bust—one he insists he is innocent of despite pleading guilty—and Kathryn is the judge assigned to the case. With allegations of corruption to the highest level, Madison agrees to try to get more information, but how can she do it without jeopardizing her opportunity? It may not matter, as Madison soon discovers the judge may also be hiding things. Did Kathryn know who Madison was when she offered her the internship? And what is going on beyond her chamber door? Will Madison’s lies come back and destroy everything before Madison seeks out the truth— nothing is as it seems
Review | The Intern Told in alternating POVs, the book starts narrated by a law student named Madison Rivera. Madison is enamoured by her law professor, Kathryn Conroy, having seen her speak many years earlier at her Catholic Prep school. I was glad we quickly got context on Madison because I didn’t love the idea that this could have been a book about an obsessed student. That’s not what this book is at all, and Madison is very bright, hard-working, and often trapped between her ambitions and her desire to help her family. Her choice becomes particularly relevant when she accepts the internship for Kathryn Conroy, even though she realizes Kathryn is the judge of her brother Danny’s case. Madison and Danny lost their father when they were young, and their mother’s grief consumed her throughout most of their childhood. That led to different living situations for the siblings — where Madison thrived, but Danny spiralled further from the boy he was. Madison takes the internship, even while she weighs the pros and cons. But it becomes clear quickly that something is strange about this internship. She hears rumours that the former Intern, Olivia, has been fired, but the law clerks act suspicious when she asks about it. The background screening and non-disclosure agreements seem extreme, even for such a prestigious office. Even the clerks seem troubled by the additional screening for a lowly intern. Late one evening, Madison and Kathryn were the last two in the office, and Kathryn invited Madison to house her and watch her cat over the weekend. Madison agrees, but a strange man arrives on the doorstep, aggressively trying to reach the judge.
Further, the judge asks Madison not to let him in and has her hold the phone up to the intercom so she can pretend to be home. I wondered what was going on in Kathryn Conroy’s life. Who was this man? And why is the judge so secretive and protective of her security? From there, we switch to Kathryn’s POV. I won’t spoil what we learn about Judge Kathryn, but her past and present were fascinating. Her chapters riveted me. Kathryn was mesmerizing even through the pages of the book. Her past is dark, and there is a lot to learn about Judge Conroy. I liked how her story was revealed to the readers throughout the book, with more secrets and twists each time we revisited it. It was interesting to get Madison’s take on the current events, then switch to Kathryn’s POV, eventually dovetailing to the exact moment but from her perspective. The further I got into this book, the harder it was to put it down. I had to know what would happen next! I was on the edge of my seat. Every chapter turned the story, and I was unsure who to trust. Whenever I thought I had it figured out, something else would get thrown in and change everything—gripping. I thoroughly enjoyed reading my first book by Michele Campbell.

I want to thank St Martin’s Press for my ARC copy and NetGalley in exchange for an honest opinion. My opinions are my own.

Madison Rivera gets a chance to intern for one of her law school professors, Kathryn Conroy, who is also an alumni of the same private school as Madison. One thing standing in the way of Madison's success is that her brother has been arrested, which could eliminate her from being interviewed for the position. She decides to leave out this fact on her application. After becoming the successful candidate, Madison begins working in Kathryn's office and begins uncovering connections between her brother's arrest and Kathryn's life.
The two women begin a cat and mouse game of truths and lies.
A suspenseful storyline that has you second guessing motives of characters to the very end.
Thoroughly addictive read for all you mystery lovers out there.

An edge of your seat thriller, Couldn't put it down and lots of twists that I didn't see coming. I was rooting for Madison, the main character, a Harvard law student with secrets of her own.

Came for the courtroom drama, stayed for the chaos. If you are okay with suspending disbelief and just going along for a ride, I imagine you will find The Intern quite enjoyable.

Thank you for allowing me to read this book as an ARC.
I was totally in love with this book! It caught my interest from beginning to end! It kept me on my toes and I totally did not expect the ending...so many great twists and turns that were unexpected! Great job with this book! This was the first one for me from this author and I will be looking for all her other books for sure!
The two protagonists worked well with each other and complemented the storyline. They were both likeable and at times unlikable all the same. Amazing job on having the lookback and how it feeds into the present time. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and did not want it to end!

Her heels clacked on the tile floor as she made her way to the office. The door creaked as she pushed it open, but no one was inside. Something felt off about the room as she looked around… something sinister in the air. And that’s when she saw him… the man with the gun.

The Intern is a legal thriller following Madison who is a law student interning for a very well known judge. What she doesn’t know is the danger she’s about to step foot into when she enters the judge’s world.

I was immediately drawn into this book and many tense moments had me turning pages quickly, but as the story progressed things became a little bit too unbelievable for me. It was entertaining throughout and I enjoyed the read… I just wish it would have felt a little more realistic or gone a different route.

If you’re a fan of legal thrillers and unreliable characters then you may enjoy reading this one!

Michele Campbell has brought together the perfect ingredients for a psychological thriller; complex characters, propulsive plot, unreliable narrators, drama/lies/and the secrets women keep. I hate that it took me a while to finally pick this one up because once I started reading I couldn’t set it aside and it will land on my top thriller reads of 2023. Thanks to NetGalley and, St. Martin’s Press for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. I will be adding a print copy to my shelves.
