Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an e-galley of this title in exchange for an honest review. I have only previously read a handful of Smith's novels, and was interested in reading a collection of short stories this time. These were perfect bites of intrigue, each one a standout. Some of them I wish would turn into full novels, and only a couple of stories felt like they dragged on too long. They were infused with clear attention to detail, humor, and research to make you feel transported to wherever the story was. An overall enjoyable read!

Is there nothing Alexander McCall Smith can’t make charming? His prolific works have trained me so well; all I need to see is his name and my heart becomes calm and happy.

This is a book of short tales about spies, rooted in non-fiction and branching into fiction. I appreciate that the introduction includes references which lead to the true stories from which these grew.

Interesting, soothing, and at times laugh-out-loud funny, these stories are highly worth your time. Nuns and Spies was my particular favorite. I’m looking forward to sharing this with patrons!

Thanks to Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage and Anchor, NetGalley, and of course Alexander McCall Smith for allowing access to a digital ARC in exchange for my opinions.

Alexander McCall Smith turns his hand to spies and revenge in the short stories of The Private Life of Spies and the Exquisite Art of Getting Even. The spies come from all countries and times, usually more relaxed than active in their roles. The revenge is fitting and usually gentle in getting even. I loved the story of the German spy who parachuted into England as a nun and hid out in a nunnery where he made himself useful caring for the pigs. Great read tp relax in front of a fire.

Alexander McCall Smith is my go to author for charm, wit, and humour and this book does not disappoint. I was literally laughing out loud with the first story about the German nun. So funny!! A huge thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher Pantheon (Penguin Random House) for this ARC. I hope Smith NEVER retires!!
