Being vegan in the South isn't easy, and one of the hardest examples of "going vegan" is the ubiquitous BBQ-culture. After all, barbecue is comfort food around here, and well, Terry Sargent has given Southern vegan a reason to rejoice and fire up the grill just in time for summer!

There are so many recipes in this book that I hardly know where to begin. Sargent takes you on a culinary journey through the South, but everything is vegan so you can enjoy your barbecue without feeling guilty. Not to mention the recipes are so hearty and mouth-watering that even the most die-hard carnivore will be asking for a bite. Covering everything from spices, rubs, and sauces to sandwiches and "meaty" main courses to sweets and drinks, Vegan Barbecue has something for everyone--even the little ones! (Carrot "hotdogs"...mmm, sooo good!)

Whether you're an established vegan, a newbie, or just looking to try a few meatless dishes to see what all the fuss is about, Vegan Barbecue is sure to please. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a grill to light.

I was skeptical. Vegan barbecue sounded like an oxymoron UNTIL I read this book. I’m from the South. Barbecue is a way of life so why shouldn’t there be a vegan option?

Things I loved:
- The complexity of the flavors. (Complex flavors does not equate to complex recipes)
- The ease of directions. The chef writes the directions very well and easy to follow for a home cook.
- This one is a first for me- the type font. It’s just lovely.
- These aren’t just vegan good recipes. They are just good recipes.

Things I would have liked-
- More pictures.

I am so excited to see a vegan barbecue cookbook! The author is correct in that BBQ is a staple in the south, and I'm thrilled to be able to try new things at cookouts other than a veggie dog or black bean burger. The Smoky Rack of Riibz recipe featured on the cover is going to be a staple this summer, right along with the Smoky Collard Greens and Smoked Mac n Cheeze. I'm so happy to see that the smoky flavor in the recipes included in this book comes from actually smoking the "meat" and not just from liquid smoke. Thank you NetGalley for the ARC. I look forward to owning a physical copy so I can drool over the beautiful pictures without ruining my tablet.

I've been a vegetarian my entire adult life, so this is something like the thousandth vegan cookbook I've read. A lot of them fall short of the mark with complicated or time-consuming recipes, hard to find ingredients, or pages and pages of salads that you don't really need a recipe for. Vegan Barbecue puts all of those books to shame. I'd easily put it on my list of top ten cookbooks.

The recipes are easy to follow, use everyday ingredients you can easily find in even basic grocery stores, are easy and mostly quick to prepare, and really deliver on the flavour (especially the jerk marinade. You won't be disappointed with anything you put that on).

My one complaint is that a few of the recipes use processed fake meat, but it's so very few that it almost isn't worth mentioning.

I'll definitely be returning to this book any time I need a yummy meal idea.

Yum!! Stoked that this book exists. As a vegetarian/vegan I always feel left out during bbq season. This book is packed full of recipes I think will change the feeling of being left out at the barbecue. There are so many amazing sandwiches and sides. I love that they give you some basic spices and rubs as well. I am looking forward to trying out the vegetarian brisket sandwich! The only thing I felt this cookbook was lacking was photos. I would have loved to see more photos of these amazing recipes.

Terrific bundle of summer recipes that I think will even impress non-vegans. I love that there are sauces and even desserts here.

This book is filled with intriguing recipes for the vegan cook who loves grilling and smoking. The recipes are written clearly with pictures of the completed dishes. It should be noted that many of the recipes do call for the food to be smoked which may be a turnoff, depending upon your feelings about extra gear. The recipes do seem to be adaptable in case you don't own or don't want to smoke the dishes. It is nice to a book with homemade, crafted vegan dishes rather than adapting commercially available fake meats.

I did not pick up this book for me: I picked it up as plant-based cookbooks just fly off our shelves and with BBQ season coming up, there are bound to be people looking for things to grill. Lots of ideas in here that go "Beyond Meat" (oh why eat something that is frankenfood genetically-engineered product with hundreds of ingredients when a burger has so few and you can name all of them???) and that will make your meals sing.

I am more into the side dishes here (Smoked Pineapple Salsa, Glazed Smoked Asparagus and Smoked Creamy Pumpkin Soup to name a few) but I will recommend this book to anyone looking for plant-based meals that are grilled, smoked or created in a BBQ manner.

This cookbook is about so much more than barbecue fake meat! The rubs look delicious without an assortment of obscure ingredients. The recipes themselves are grouped into sensible categories and they all look delicious. Each recipe I read looks like something that any cook from novice to experienced could reproduce with ease.

I loved the cover of this book and one thing about being vegan, I miss a good barbecue with the smokey flavors. I wss so excited to check out this cookbook and found many recipes that I cannot wait to try!

There are recipes that are starting with whole foods and some with vegan imitation meat products.

I can’t wait to try these recipes out and have this book as a staple in my kitchen.

I am not a vegan and I'll stop eating my favourite food of animal origin when I'm in the grave and not a second before, but I'm also a veggie enthusiast and have never had any problem with eating greens only and asking vegan friends for recipes. You think meat-eaters are too pushy? You think vegans are insufferably dogmatic? I can't relate, both camps have stuffed me with delicious stuff, and as far as I'm concerned, both camps are welcome to keep doing that.

But, until recently, I had never had anything vegetarian at a BBQ. I had a vague notion that you could grill veggies, but since nobody I had a BBQ meal with ever did, I did not actually see it in practice, and it remained a theoretical possibility. Then someone made BBQ zucchini and onions with some sauce I couldn't identify at a family BBQ party recently, and it was even better than the barbecued beef to me. That had me wondering what other delicious veggie BBQ I was missing, so when this book came along, I grabbed it.

Vegan Barbecue is a great resource, for newbies especially, because the lifelong vegans probably know everything in it already. It has the recipes organised by type: sauces (too many), salads (too few), sandwiches (who eats only sandwiches at BBQ parties?), mains (my favourite section, a couple of recipes I might try), veggie forward (looks like salads part 2), cheesy things (I don't know about you, but most combos of veggies and cheese are yuck! to my palate), dessert (the unhealthiest section for sure), and drinks (nah, wine is vegan and so is beer, the rest are glorified bar drinks with too many calories and questionable healthiness).

I was sad to not find anything remotely like what veggie BBQ I tasted, and I found some of the recipes rather too sweet, sugary, and some were downright impractical. But tastes are personal, and I'm sure others will find something they like in this cookbook, be they vegan or not.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. This book is exactly the cookbook I have been looking for. I have been vegan for about 7 years and my boyfriend is a pit master at a local BBQ restaurant. He always makes amazing looking meals on the grill/smoker and sometimes I feel left out. I do cook many meals on the grill and some turn out great others not so much. I also get tired of grilled the same meals. The author provides the type of recipes anyone looking to make BBQ needs, rubs, salts, sauces, marinades and of course the "meats." The author provides beautiful pictures for most of the recipes. The author also gets bonus points for including a Brussels sprout recipe. I highly recommend this book for any vegan interested in BBQing! I have already pre-ordered a copy of this book through my local bookstore.

I have somehow spawned a vegan…after a period of denial, I have finally resigned myself to this sad fact. But because I love my child, veganism and all, I have begun trying to figure ways to offer him yummy options when the rest of us are gorging on delicious flesh. This cookbook is super helpful. The recipes are simple and varied. And while they are tragically devoid of beef and pork, they do offer some interesting ways to transform plants into something firmly edible, even bordering tasty!

Adding this to my summer staples, there are a lot of vegan books out there but they often just become clones of each other. This one has taken the time to understand we want a little more than a sweet potato curry. Vegan Brisket Sandwich - my mouth that already watering...

This wouldn’t download, i am unclear what the issue is, so I have no opinion. I hope it works better for others.

This is a good barbecue cookbook for vegans. The sauce and rub recipes were my favorite parts. There are lots of keepers in there even if you aren’t vegan. Sargent promises real food ingredients but this is questionable. You won’t be cooking with frozen fake burgers but most of the main dishes rely on vital wheat gluten and/or TVP. Some are made with mushrooms, tofu, tempeh or carrots. There is also a lot of use of vegan sour cream, cheese, etc.

Photos accompany about a third or half of the recipes. No nutritional info is provided. Honey is used in some recipes, though agave syrup can be used instead. Otherwise it’s soundly vegan. Smokers are used for most of the recipes— even the drinks and desserts.

These seem like great recipes if you are the target demographic, you have a smoker, and you can eat gluten and/or soy. Do expect to do a fair amount of work. Otherwise it sounds like a trip to his restaurants would be well worth it.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book via NetGalley.

I'm always looking to widen my vegan options and I definitely found several recipes here I plan to try. The recipes include not only "meaty" vegan options, but also sides, sauces and even drinks. I'm not sure I'll be purchasing a copy to keep, but I'd definitely check it out from the library.

Thanks to Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

After reading this book I realize I am a super conservative and traditional person when it comes to barbecue. I had never thought about all the possibilities that are out there! Well, now I know! This book has opened up my eyes regarding this thing - a thing I didn't even realize was a thing until now. I will most definitely try a lot of these recipes, Never realized before that so many foods can become smokey. Fun to learn new recipes and try out new things! This book has a lot of different types of proteins, so I think there is something for everyone.
