I thought this novel was lush and beautifully written.

Made it made me want to learn more about traditional hula.

Covering generations of mothers and daughters in Hawii, Hula delves into the history of the land and the kingdom through the stories told in hula, as well as those passed down through families and matriarchies. Once used to the flow of the writing (there are jumps in time which was a wee bit confusing in the audio version) and the characters of each generation, I was very involved in the relationships and in the status of the native Hawaiians in their struggles for acceptance, land and their rights. A great read.

Absolutely excellent. Well narrated, perfectly paced, the different voices and multi generational storylines blend really well together. Thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook.

I was excited about this story because it is woman-dominated and tells an important story. Unfortunately, I was less drawn into the story than I would have liked. The content was compelling, but I felt disconnected from the characters. This storytelling style wasn't for me, particularly as an audiobook. I felt like I was missing part of the story. It was clear that the author is knowledgeable and did immense research on the subject, and I commend her for writing this book about the stolen land of Hawaii.

What a beautiful novel of Hawaii. I loved this magical story and learned so much about Hawaii and it was eye opening. The tale of a Hawaiian family coming to terms with the past while reconciling with the present they never saw coming starts in 1960's and moves through the 90's and touches beautifully and clearly on the time when Hawaii was a kingdom.

I loved how hulu was a metaphor for the matriarch and the women of Hawaiian culture and begs the question what makes a person Hawaiian and what makes a family.

I loved how the book was written in the fourth person and created a collective voice telling the history of Hawaii.
The narrator did an excellent job setting the tone of Hawaii and helped with the pronunciation of hawaiian words I probably would have messed up if I was reading instead of listening.

I loved this book and I am grateful to NetGalley and the publisher who provided the audio ARC in exchange for my review.
