I loved this story, and what amazing graphics! A great twist on the chupacabra. If you liked Chupacarter and Doña Quixote, and/or enjoy Hispanic mythology and representation, with a twist, and adorable illustrations in full cover that make you feel inside the story, read this :)

First of all, I love Chupie and he is so adorable. Also I enjoyed this graphic. It was one about family and friendship. Between both family and friends choices had to be made and Violeta just wanted to do her best to be a great friend/daughter/granddaughter. Every person in the story was just trying to take care of their family and that is important. I loved the art and the story flowed.

I love love love seeing Amparo Ortiz foray into middle grade, especially with such a bright and fun graphic novel! While not something I'm used to, I really enjoyed the back and forth between Violeta narrating the story and the dialogue (not to mention, the way that the art distinguished between the two versions of text). It felt refreshing to see a story with a friendship that includes adding a new member to the fold and while I expected to be way more into the mythology of the story, I found that Violeta's personal story was incredibly engaging! The storylines about Puerto Rico's recovery from Hurricane Maria and Violeta's family dynamics only added to the full plot.

Besides having an interesting story, I really fell in love with Ronnie Garcia's art. Their style will absolutely appeal to my patrons who love graphic novels and the colors were so bright and vibrant and made the book that much more enjoyable. I'm absolutely looking forward to hopefully seeing more work from them. Keeping my fingers crossed that Saving Chupie leads to a sequel!

This was a cute story about Violeta Rubio saving a local chupacabra from international smugglers and monster hunters. The story explores friendship, family, and doing the right thing. Chupie was a very cute chupacabra and I would totally try to keep him as a pet too.

The artwork for this comic is beautiful and vibrant. It really helps sell the story and bring this cute little Chupie to life.

After her repeated offers to help in the preparation of the re-opening of her abuela’s restaurant are rejected, Violet makes some new friends and together they set off to solve the mystery of a legendary creature that is attacking livestock in the area. A skeptical Violet soon learns the truth behind the tale of the blood sucking monster. At the heart of this middle grade graphic novel is the resilience and determination of the Puerto Rican people, many of whom were scattered across the US after Hurricane Maria, to build back from the devastation. Saving Chupie is written by Amparo Ortiz and stunningly illustrated by Ronni Garcia. This is a “must add” to my multilingual learners classroom library.

It's Violeta's first trip to Puerto Rico, and adventure awaits. When her parents and grandma tell Vi that they don't need help with the restaurant, she becomes lonely and extremely bored. When she meets Diego and Lorena, she feels like an outsider to their friendship duo and the fancy bike they're building. One day, Vi ventures into the forest and stumbles upon a chupacabra. Naming him Chupie, Vi struggles to keep him safe from notorious, shadowy men who want it for themselves. It's up to Vi and her two friends to save Chupie and make it in time for her grandma's restaurant to reopen.
This was so adorable! I absolutely loved chupie and how he acted like a puppy at all times. Vi and Chupie's friendship was cute, and I liked how Diego was able to apologize for his misunderstandings and Lorena's grace in forgiving him. Supernatural creatures meet Puerto Rican culture in a fast, action-packed thrill ride from Amparo Ortiz. With her grandma reopening her restaurant, Vi loves being able first to hand trying out the recipes. I wish I were there to try them out, too! A fantastic graphic novel read.

This was such a sweet and beautiful book! Loved it, both me and my child! The story is beautiful, a very unusual one, but a beautiful one. The illustrations are just perfect. The characters are awesome. And the Chupie is the most adorable thing ever.
The only thing I would like to point out is: I’d say it is preferred if the reader (or at least someone in their proximity) speaks at least some basic Spanish. There are a few words here and there in Spanish, a sentence here and there, and it really helps to be able to understand those.
As an added bonus, the story is not just a fairytale, there are some serious topics also. Yet those are presented in such a – I would say, in such a loving way – that it makes a perfect addition to the story.
Loved it. There should be more books like this in the world.
Also, my child said she would love to read more books by the same author. So, we will be waiting for more awesome books.

Oh wow, this is the sweetest, cutest middle grade graphic novel I've read in a long time. It's got great life lessons, it's got a precious little creature in Chupie, and it's got great representation for post-Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico and characters who are rebuilding after that disaster. I guess Amparo Ortiz can really do it all!

This graphic novel was so cute and fun! There was enough of the fun to keep the attention of kids, but it also has some serious topics thrown in too.

I would highly recommend this one!
