So there is nothing wrong with this book. Nothing wrong with the presentation, the placing of each recipe in a story, the use of photos, the rest of it. The problem here is that I didn’t know what Dominican cuisine was before requesting this from Netgalley. Now that I’ve read a bit about it, I’m not sure it’s for me. It seems to be like Mexican meets Carribean – which I kind of expected – minus the spiciness of both. That is not a selling point for me. Well I give Dominican a go sometime? Sure, although it seems that the ingredients to do so aren’t going to be the ones I casually have in my pantry (maybe if I cooked more Mexican). Still, I can only recommend this cookbook to people who aren’t me.

This is a beautiful cookbook for a region that is a combination of many styles I like, primarily Spanish and Latin American. There's a lot of plantains, which I can't have unfortunately, and some harder to locate ingredients (in the US.) There are several recipes I would try (that aren't on the author's blog at myDominicankitchen.com.) There aren't photos for all the recipes but the included photos are hunger-inducing.

I love Dominican food but never thought I was able to make it myself. This book gives me confidence I absolutely can. Highly recommend!

Anyone not familiar with food from the Dominican Republic will want to pick up an excellent cookbook by Vanessa Mota, The Dominican Kitchen: Homestyle Recipes That Celebrate the Flavors, Traditions, and Culture of the Dominican Republic. While the food is similar to Cuban, Puerto Rican, and other Latin food, this author shows the differences and presents absolutely mouthwatering dishes.

There is an introductory chapter with a list of ingredients, and explanations of how these ingredients are used in the Dominican kitchen. This chapter is well-written and isn’t too involved, so it can be read in a matter of minutes. The recipes are written in the traditional form with the ingredients listed first, followed by step-by-step instructions that are easy for anyone, whether a beginning cook or advanced cook, to understand and follow. Most of the ingredients listed can be purchased at mainstream grocery stores, with just a few that will need to be bought at a Latin market. Many of the recipes are very easy to put together, and have minimal ingredients, so most cooks can make them in a minimal amount of time.

One of the best parts of this cookbook is that almost all of the dishes are accompanied by beautiful, professional photographs so that anyone will know beforehand just what their dish should look like. All types of dishes are included: appetizers, soups, salads, main and side dishes, and desserts, so it is easy to put together a full Dominican meal just using these recipes.

All told, this is an excellent way to get acquainted with food from the Dominican Republic; it will inspire anyone who likes to add variety to their meals, and it will tempt readers to visit the country.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

Let me be upfront and honest, I haven’t made any of the recipes from this book. YET! As a seasoned home cook, I love to browse through to evaluate the recipes’ and layout first. I am really impressed with this book’s approachability to Dominican food. The beginning section on staple/pantry items wasn’t overwhelming, and I feel like I could easily find most ingredients in my small suburb. I also loved that there were pictures with almost every recipe. I find that really helpful when trying out new recipes. I’m really excited to try some of these mouthwatering dishes in my home soon.

This book presents plenty of delicious recipes that are part of the Dominican culture. I loved all the recipes shown and the fact that they had the name in the language spoken in the Dominican Republic. The photos were great too, they made impatient in wanting to try them.

Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point for the ARC.
Awesome collection of Dominican recipes! The recipes were on point. They are very similar to what I do at home and what my grandmother, mother and aunts have taught me. There are a few recipes I cannot wait to try.

A cuisine about which I know little so always a good start. The recipes are appealing, colourful and almost all very straightforward to make. Pictures are appetising (except sopa de pico y pala - I cannot abide chicken feet except attached to said chicken!). For a European, especially in Scotland, quite a few ingredients are not easily found - fresh cassava, yams, plantains although I suppose our typical supermarket "ripe and ready to eat bananas" would definitely masquerade as the green unripe guineitos. The various other vegetables in particular are familiar and easily grown/available although the precise varieties may differ. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.

Great cookbook filled with not only delicious recipes but pictures to go along with them, which is especially wonderful to have accompany recipes you are not familiar with. I found the recipes to range in levels of difficulty but for the most part as long as you have some level of cooking knowledge I don’t think you’d have a hard time with these.

This is a beautiful cookbook filled with staples of Dominican cuisine and beautiful photos of the Island. It is lovingly created and has typical snacks, breakfasts, entrees, desserts, and drinks.

I do not know a lot about Dominican cooking so this book was so much fun to read through. This book was a bit hard to read through as an e-book (I would recommend a physical copy).

In addition, the book was beautifully done, I cannot wait to try some of these recipes out.

An absolutely delightful cookbook: lovely photos with just the right amount of story and description accompanying each recipe, and delicious results. One of my favorite dishes is chicken pates with chutney, so I was eager to try Mota's recipe for pastelitos de pollo. They were DELICIOUS.

I can’t wait to try some of these recipes, they are so many that look mouth-watering and something I have never tried before. Beautiful pictures too.

Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.

Before downloading this book i knew very little about Dominican cuisine. The book gives a comprehensive foundation of knowledge about the cuisine, the staples used and techniques required. I look forward to trying some of the recipes!

This is a beautiful cookbook with nice, simple recipes and wonderful graphics. Almost all of the recipes have pictures, which is something I look for in a cookbook. As someone who is not well versed in Dominican cooking, I found this book easy to follow, interesting, and yummy. I highly recommend both of the recipes for Arepas!

Such a bubbly book that really expresses the author’s passion for food and cooking. This is my first time reading a cookbook about the cuisine from The Dominican Republic. I love the content and layout.

The perfect cookbook, I have so much envy that this is not on my cooking bookshelf in my kitchen. The book is beautiful and bright, the text is clear and the recipes are simple yet exciting. The problem I encountered was that it does not work well with the Netgalley app, it is not available in E-book format on the Kindle app, I find on a day-to-day basis the Netgalley app not working efficiently. I would struggle to use this day-to-day in the format it is in, which is unfortunate as the content appeals to me. I have provided stars based on the book cover and descriptive content.

I am not a great cook but I love trying food from different cultures and living in Australia I don't think I've ever seen Dominican food. I do worry about the availability of some ingredients and wish there was a list of suitable replacements but that would probably make the recipes less authentic. (Plantains will be tricky to source)

I love the fact that there were many easy simple recipes so that those less cooking skilled(like me) can still make plenty of dishes in here.
