I loved this book that I received thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers.

The book is a personal account of Scott’s learnings in his company (I guess founded by his father) and how he realises his errors in his own leadership as well as the impact on the culture of MB.

There are so many pieces in the book that are noteworthy - his realisation of being a self-centred person by his staff and then having to learn to respect and value all his employees. The need to be encouraging of people who need it the most - the ones at the bottom. How he sets about a culture of love in the organization with a focus on relationships which he says is much more easier than command and control!

Cultures are hard to build, even harder to repair, but easy to destroy - useful quote! The anecdote about his trophy being won through cheating was insightful - he was schooled by a young girl to return that trophy to the actual winner, which he gracefully accepted and had an event to handover the trophy in front of the young girl. It takes a lot of humility to accept inputs from someone that younger than him and to also admit to his mistake and take corrective actions. The impact on the organization with such stories can be very strong!

He creates couple of characters to emphasise the points. The indestructible hero and the culture heroes - the first to be rid of and the second to be carefully selected and leveraged.

He also shows how important it is for leaders to connect with their people through his anecdote of his wife’s approach towards interacting with employees during parties. This also adds to the culture of love.

Each chapter has a list of questions at the end that help the reader to assess if they are doing the right thing with their own org culture.

A book that is of use to every leader and also to those studying organizational culture.
