Dani, Laurence, and Peter find themselves in a small Rhode Island beach town where they take a hard look at their lives, pushed by each other to make some changes. Famous photographer Dani has a gut feeling that something is missing in her photos. She is determined to learn from the best, Laurence, a cantankerous old recluse who needs a shove to get involved with his local community again. Laurence’s grandson Peter is on track to take over the family business. The only problem is he wants none of it.
With many additional characters and several plot lines, the story moved quickly and had a satisfying ending. I struggled in the beginning because we were dropped right into drama, upheaval, and life-changing decisions. Difficult to figure it all out, I wished for more backstory and/or fewer plot lines with deeper dives into each one. Also, the dialogue was a bit choppy and short. Very direct and lacking emotion in some of the scenes that needed more nuance. The many plot lines and quick turns and changes distracted from the main theme of the story. This book is about loving yourself, making the best choices for your life, and giving to others who need assistance and hope. A bit too many broad strokes in this one for me to love it. But if you’re a fan of city-girl meets small-town-life give this one a chance.
