Suspenseful thriller with an ending I could not have predicted. I really enjoyed reading this book. The story moved along quickly and there were lots of twists and turns. It was not predictable which I appreciate. I enjoy that the main character reconnects with an old flame and there’s an undercurrent of romance throughout. This kept the plot interesting aside from the mystery. Overall a great and very interesting read. Thanks NetGalley for allowing me to read an early copy!

This had a great premise that sang to my true crime loving heart. Unfortunately, in execution, it failed. There some thrilling parts and surprising twists, but it was difficult to enjoy them because of the writing style. It was clunky and awkward and made it impossible to get into the story.

This was a hard read. The writing wasn’t great and I was not into it at all. I wanted to DNF it numerous times.

Kacy is an urban explorer on YouTube. She comes back to town after many years to take care of her ailing father. She finds an abandoned camp to explore and comes across a dead body. Her ex boyfriend is now a cop and she helps him investigate. They think it’s linked to a case there from 30 years ago.
This was a thrilling read I flew through but was a bit off in places and what happened to the kid?
Thanks NetGalley and Immersive Books Publishing for this ARC!

I like the idea of this story because social media is everywhere and stories need to be told about the dangers... I just didn't love the writing and it fell flat at points for me. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. Three stars.

I enjoyed this book and liked the twist at the end! However, I found it to be a little slow moving and I found Myself skipping through to get to the end.

Sorry. That was not our day dear book.
Well. I admit, I was seduced by that Reese's Book Club sticker - which has been removed by now. Obviously. Because the book is not ready to be in any kind of book club. This book needs a very talented editor to go over everything again twice.. thrice even! The writing was so weird. Kind of middle school simplistic but also trying way too hard to sound smart while still coming across as very young - even though the author is of a higher age. I sometimes even had the feeling that a non-english speaker had written it - or at least a person with english as their second or third language. And then they google translated it! The writing just didn't flow through my brain at all. It was so weird.
The story itself... it could've been pretty good, but it was all too quick and too inaccuarate at times. There should have been a bit more about the racial parts. Maybe a tiny back-in-time chapter to 1986. Just more of everything. It was all too fast and like I said - the writing was just not anything that endears a book to a reader.
But it wasn't all bad - it was okay. It was a bit interesting and suspensy and emotional here and there. There is potential for more!
The cover is pretty. But the title doesn't really make any sense either. 🤷‍♀️

I would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I was intrigued by the premise, a Youtuber who records herself visiting abandoned places goes back to her hometown to help her ailing father but learns about a 3 decades old murder at a local summer camp. While at home, she re-connects with an old flame, who is now a cop and trying to solve this same murder she has somehow found herself involved in. With very short chapters, I basically flew through this book and enjoyed it.

The overall plot line of this book is intriguing. We follow Kacy, a determined YouTuber and abandoned building explorer as she returns home and soon finds herself embroiled in a murder investigation that unearths a similar murder from the past. We get to watch the circumstances unfold as she and her childhood friend Robert, now a local detective, fit the investigative puzzle pieces together to bring a killer to justice.

I did find that the simplistic writing and abrupt chapter transitions threw me off a bit in terms of reading flow. Additionally, the featured romantic relationship seemed to pick up too quickly in a way that felt unrealistic, and the intimate scenes were a bit awkwardly written.

This is a fast paced and attention grabbing thriller with a lot of potential. The author touches on racial issues and how bias can impact how crimes are handled, which is a thought provoking topic that made the story more impactful to read. I rated this on a personal scale of about 2.5-3 stars.

Thank you for the opportunity for an honest review!

This mystery kept my attention for the most part and was a quick read with short chapters; the pacing was excellent! Unfortunately, the writing style was simplistic and the story became more unrealistic as it progressed. I had originally requested it from NetGalley as it it has the Reese’s Book Club sticker; come to find out this was a mistake and Reese has chosen another book with “Pines” in the title; the sticker has since been removed. I wish I had liked this one more than I did!

Thank you very much to NetGalley and Immersive Books Publishing for the advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!

This was a fast paced thriller that definitely kept my attention. Kacy comes back to her estranged father in Oklahoma to get him back on his feet after a heart attack, only to end up finding a dead body in an abandoned summer camp. Kacy is a Youtube Influencer who investigates abandoned places for a living, so she decides to give trying to solve a 30 year old murder a try. Only standing in her way is the boy she left behind 9 years ago when she left town, tight lipped law enforcement, and her own curiosity. I'd give this 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4. It seemed like she and Robert just picked right back up after 9 years way too easily, and she went back and forth between hating her dad and forgiving him. But I did like the mystery. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
