How to Make Wood Signs is a well written and accessible tutorial instruction guide by Kendra Chura. Released 15th Nov 2023 by Fox Chapel, it's 120 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is a very well written and logically arranged tutorial guide featuring lots of contemporary and attractive signs in wood. The author manages to convey the necessary info to allow readers to gather materials and begin creating projects in wood safely and successfully.

The introduction covers tools, materials, setup, choosing and sourcing wood, and safety. The choice of scroll saw is covered in depth, as are the newer-to-the-hobby-market laser cutters (lots of good info here). The practical tutorial chapters which follow include info on the process of cutting, forming, finishing, detailing, hanging the finished project, lettering, etc.

There's an in-depth chapter covering epoxies, resins, oils, and inlays. The text is accompanied by plenty of clear, color photos throughout.

The final project tutorial chapters include four full projects with step-by-step instructions. Scale templates are included. Each tutorial includes an introduction, a highlighted text box with full list of tools and supplies, and step-by-step photo/text directions.

Four stars. Well written and accessible. Very well photographed throughout. This would make an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, gift-giving, activity groups, maker's groups, and for the woodworker's home studio library.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes

Exactly what you need when starting your own wood workshop. Great ideas, beautiful pictures, and just the right amount of instructions.

This book is something I was in search of without any knowledge of where to get it and how such things could have been explained. The techniques shown here are so new to me and very easy to adapt. I was aware of wood burning but never learnt about engravings. Epoxy resin I tried once but not so fine in it.
All the steps were quite informative. Some signs were beautiful but some were just exceptional with 3D illustrations. But there must be bit easy to go steps for DIY at home also, because not everyone can afford to buy all those tools.

I found this to be a very informative book. Easily readable, well photographed, and easy to understand. Full of ideas and instructions on how to make your own wood signs. Projects range from beginners to advanced woodworkers. I look forward to using this information this winter while I am cooped up in my garage woodshop.

This book is very detailed in instructions for making signs and also includes patterns! I love crafting and can't wait to try making my own signs- I particularly love the tools sign. Would look great in my future woodshop!

I highly doubt a scroll saw will ever land in my tiny condo unit, but if it did, I would want to make wood signs like these ones.

This is a lovely book, with pictorial step by step instructions for a beginner. The projects are simple but nice. The possibilities are almost endless and the author shows some of her own really lovely finished work.

5 stars from me.

I really enjoyed this book, but I was disappointed that it didn't include more about how to create the "ocean" effect using epoxy resin and liquid white pigment. It mentions that you should use liquid pigment, but there aren't any steps for how to use it.

Other than that, I thought this was a great book for sign-making. It was thorough, giving detailed steps for every part of the process from cutting out and preparing the blank, including safety tips on sanding, sealing and painting your creation. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who's interested in using a scroll saw to create signs for a variety of occasions.

This book is incredible. It has given me so many ideas and now I want to go out and buy even more tools. The descriptions themselves are great but paired with the pictures, tips and other explanations, there is everything needed to get going. A costly book if you don’t already have everything needed as you will want to get everything and make everything…happy making!!

This is a fabulous well written book, with very good instructions, detail and step by step photographs on how to make lovely wood signs for your house, room, business, garden or anywhere a sign is needed.
Great projects and patterns included, I would really love to make the duck for our poultry enclosure, but all are lovely different. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DRC

‘How to Make Wood Signs’ is a nice guide/how-to book by author, Kendra Chura, detailing how she created some of her sign projects. It is not your typical project book that gives the user a pattern and step-by-step instructions, but it does detail the steps a person can follow to create a project of their own. The author’s instructions are very thorough, and provide a list of all of the necessary materials and safety precautions that a woodworker will need to be successful.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read and review an advanced copy of this book. When using Kindle to read it, some of the formatting was not perfect, which a paper copy should remedy.

How to Make Wood Signs is a thoroughly impressive how-to guide that I enjoyed reading and found educational for someone that has never made a wood sign (or much of anything) out of wood before.I have some experience working with woods from woodworking courses in high school, but it’s pretty basic knowledge, so I really appreciate all of the detailed instructions, pictures, and explanations for everything required to make the signs.

I didn’t have a chance to first-hand try out any of my new formed education, or test out the instructions / how-to first hand, but I found this guide to be incredible thorough (and very interesting)! Kendra’s wood sign examples in the book show her unbelievable talent as an artist as her signs are totally gorgeous.

As an example of some of what you can expect, Kendra walks us through the following items with written and picture instruction;
- all of the supplies needed
- the type of saws (like a scroll saw which I had never heard of before) or lasers required and what size and types of blades and how they work
- everything from shapes of the wood material to banding, colour, spacing, sizes, sanding, framing, adding dowels, painting and so much more.

Thank you to Kendra Chura, NetGalley and Fox Chapel publishing for the copy to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Detailed book that shows you how to make beautiful wood signs. To create these signs you need a lot of tools. I don’t see myself making these, but they are very nice and provide great details and patterns.

Thank you, Netgalley and Fox Chapel Publishing, for the ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Although this sign book has a certain style Kendra Chura is talented. Also, the book is a great detailed step-by-step and covers every aspect of how to design, assemble, etc. All the technical aspects are thoroughly covered from materials, tools, equipment, paints, etc.

There are a lot of tools involved in making these signs though which makes one wonder if this is a book really for those wanting to go into business making signs with a very saturated market. The author does a great illustration of 3D layered signs and signs with resin and lasering.

I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher, for the opportunity to read and review How to Make Wood Signs by Kendra Chura.
