Four former BFFs find themselves back together to battle the town when it wants to cut down the biggest tree in the park. A quick, basic magic spell later and the tree is saved. Was it magic or coincidence?
The gang tries more magic, just to be sure, and summon the Demon of Chaos.
What happens next is a Riverdale meets the Craft meets Scooby Doo thriller.
Thank you NetGalley for the review copy!
A fun graphic novel about a unique group of friends who are trying to save their beloved elm tree with witchcraft. what could go wrong?...
Would recommend if you like easy and witchy reads!
I can’t say enough praise for this book. Friendship, magic, witchcraft, a little spooky. It was amazing. I love the friendship and how witchcraft bonds them.
This was more like a 2.75 for me! I think I see a lot of people really loving this, but I struggled getting into it. The beginning was promising, but kind of tapered in the middle. Things slowed down and then there was a flashback in the middle that kind of messed things up for me. I also felt like I kept getting distracted from the central narrative and plot line? also, this moved a bit slowly for me and there were some scenes that dragged. I also was iffy on the art. The art itself is really pretty and there are even some stunning, breathtaking panels (especially at the end when they call upon beings to help them), but there were also some panels that fell very short in comparison and seemed rushed? I don't know. I keep going back and forth with this book. It has a lot to enjoy about it, including the art style and the premise is promising as well, there were just a few things that prevented me from falling in love with it. However, I see a lot of people really enjoying this, especially those who love a good witchy read!
This book was ok for me. Interesting concept but not much action. random characters that didn’t contribute much to the story.
Still very entertaining.
Coven is about a group of friends who use witchcraft to save an old elm tree they are fond of. The girls are surprised and excited about their success, but little do they know, they have also summoned a demon to their little town...
This graphic novel is all about female friendship, relationships, and magic. The art style is very eye-catching and the images add to the storytelling in a compelling manner.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone who loves magical stories, witches, coming of age, and graphic novels.
This was a fun, easy read! I really enjoyed the friendship between the girls, they’re written like real teens which is rare.
Thank you NetGalley for making it possible for me to read this graphic novel/comic!
First of all, the illustrations in this were just absolutely gorgeous, I’m obsessed with the colours used and the character designs are so individual to each character.
This book gave me such cosy witchy vibes! And I read all of it in such a short space of time because it just had me hooked from the beginning. I didn’t find it cringy at all as I have with graphic novels in the past. There were some hilarious moments which were done really effectively and I found myself physically laughing at the book. This would be a perfect cosy autumn/Halloween read!
There were small amounts of disturbing images so make sure to check any trigger warnings before reading.
Very enjoyable! The pacing of the story was really nice and kept it engaging from start to end. I also loved the art style, particularly the color saturation! Very fitting for the story that was being told.
Coven follows 4 high school girls and their journey into Witchcraft. I loved this comic so much. It’s perfect for anyone who grew up with The Craft, Teen Witch, Practical Magic, Charmed, Witches of Eastwick etc… it has all the witchy vibes.
The characters are cute, quirky and easy to like. Their friendship is typical of high school girls, ups and downs.
On a more serious note, the author did a great job incorporating actual magick and witchcraft elements without it being cheesy or cliche. I’m not sure if they practice themselves but regardless it’s well researched and accurate.
My favorite part is definitely the design/illustration. As an artist myself, I found myself “oohing and ahhing” the color palettes and taking it all in. I plan on revisiting around Halloween just because I feel like it would fit perfectly in October.
This was such a fun, light hearted, and cute story. Our characters were the absolute best and the story was interesting and gave me the warm fuzzies. Also, the illustrations were incredibly beautiful.
This was such a fun little graphic novel! I love all things witchy, and this did a great job of striking the balance between witchy magic and danger as well as some regular teenage life aspects. I really liked the characters, and I found their personalities to be very distinct. The only thing I struggled with a bit was getting a hit lost in the ordering of the panels, which is strange for me as I do read a fair amount of graphic novels. I just found the setup to be less intuitive than I’m used to. The art was beautiful regardless and I definitely enjoyed! Thank you to NetGalley & Europe Comics for the eArc!
The vibe of this graphic novel was very much 90s witch. Adding the characters love of the craft added to the feel of this. The story telling was easy to understand. The graphics were beautifully illustrated. I love the friendship that these girls have. Showing that different personalities and backgrounds can all be friends.
I am not a huge reader of graphic novels, so my experience is limited. I did enjoy this one. I wished there was more background on the families and more time spent on the really cool villain that we didn’t get to see much of. The side story with Lily and her love interest seemed to not feed much into the story, maybe it’s building for a next book? I’m not sure. I liked the characters, but I wanted to know them better and understand what motivated them. I also recognize that it has been translated from French and things can sometimes get lost in translation.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This graphic novel follows 4 friends, Eve, Diane, Lily and Morgane. They find out that the elm tree in their park which has sentimental memories for each character is going to get cut down. They come up with a plan to use witchcraft, forming a ritual to help save the tree. But it seems they’ve done more than just that and awoken a demon.
This graphic novel wasn’t good or bad it was just ok for me. I know that those from the intended audience of YA would probably enjoy this more than me.
It had some great themes highlighting friendship, power, caring about the planet, feminism, etc. that I really enjoyed and some areas of spookiness but I would have preferred more of the scare factor. The illustrations were good but the book didn’t do what I wanted it to do. I wish we could have gotten more character development for 242 page graphic novel (my version). The pacing and set up was a little a little odd for me having a flashback to around a year ago but then moving back into present time which wasn’t clear to the reader leaving me confused about which setting/time we were in at the moment.
It was kind of hard for me to follow but I didn’t look at it close enough to realize it was a comic I just went witches and girl group bet. As a comic I liked it but I’m not great at reading comics it had a nice story it just wasn’t for me.
This comic is really cute but it took me a bit to actually get lost in the story and really enjoy it. I like that it has queer representation and a fun witchy storyline. I don’t know if I will continue with the series yet but I do recommend it!
I devoured this in one sitting. This is a totally immersive world with complex characters that are beautifully drawn. The horror scenes are dipicted perfectly and I wish I had several pages as prints. All of the characters are actually well-rounded. I enjoyed the pacing, as well as the twists. This book has mystery, amazing imagery, witches, rituals, demons, and more!
Thank you to Netgalley and Europe Comics for the ARC!
- can’t beat witchy graphic novels, and this is a great example of it!
- I loved the way music was represented in this book, and that it was referencing songs that most people would know! They went really well with the pop culture references-lots are hidden on the character’s clothing.
- I did think parts of this story could’ve been flushed out more. Graphic novels usually feel that way because there’s only so much info you can fit, but there were places that really needed more context.
- the reveal at the end felt both obvious and a little twisty at the end. I’m hoping there’s more, because it’s opened a lot of questions!
- I thought the illustrations did a great job of matching the vibe of the book!
This was overall a cute story with great artwork. The pacing was a little clunky, and the character development felt lopsided and not very thorough (I honestly can’t tell you the names of the 4 main characters, but I can tell you the name of one of their boyfriends). The relationship between the girls felt genuine enough and there were points that made me laugh.
Overall this was okay, nothing particularly stand out but nothing particularly amazing either.
