I was pretty confident going into this that I would enjoy it: cute art and a story about a bunch of teen girls experimenting with wicca? The Craft came out when I was a pre-teen and became an insta-favorite of mine and my friends, though we were nowhere near as cool as the girls in this comic (regardless of the writer trying to make them uncool, haha).
The comic even bluntly addresses the influence The Craft had on this story, with the characters mentioning it, and even watching it at one point. Another clear influence that is also mentioned in-story is Buffy the Vampire the Slayer, with one character's moms trying to get her to watch the show (the moms being Tara/Willow shippers for sure). The entire story felt very similar to the sort of monster-of-the-week of classic BTVS or Charmed, and gives strong nostalgia vibes but not too much. The main girls are all very much Gen Zers and the story straddles that line of nostalgia and present-day setting well, in my opinion.
I also really enjoyed the colorful art by Da Coffee Time and Christo - it was crisp and cute.
Overall a very enjoyable YA horror comic! I only removed one star because I wasn't thrilled with the ending - an abrupt cliffhanger. I hope that means a sequel, though!
I feel like this had the potential to be great but I just felt like it was too disjointed. The groundwork was there but I felt no affinity for the characters. I liked their sisterhood but the dialog and banter just did not gel for me. It almost ventured into manga levels of spontaneous yelling that was out of place a lot of times. I liked the overall "The Craft"-ness of it and by the end, I was actually ready for more lore about their families and connection to Collette. But getting there, that was a lot of work.

Rating: 7/10 – 3,5 stars out of 5
Genre: Graphic novel
Friendship is the strongest magic.
In this graphic novel we meet four very different friends who want to save their town. However, not everything will go smoothly.
The designs are quite cute and perfect for teens or older. Some are too impressive for small children.
The colors are incredible and allow you to differentiate the friends from each other.
The plot is interesting, and the final twist is quite well staged, although I would have liked them to delve a little deeper into that part to know the story and know how their powers were going to develop.
I would read its sequel without thinking. I really liked it and it reads very fast.

Thank you NetGalley and Europe Comics for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was a very fun and exciting graphic novel. The illustrations were excellent and beautiful, allowing you to really get a feel for the characters and their personalities. I loved the plot, it was addictive and was really easy to get into. This was a well rounded book, with good diversity and relatable characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for an Arc of this graphic novel!
I really enjoyed Coven and thought it was a really fun and feel good, with slight horror and spooky aspects, YA graphic novel!
The art was absolutely beautiful and really made the story come to life! I loved the queer and body representation, the characters were all so lovable too — the friendships were great to read as well as their humour dynamics.
Overall, this was a fun and entertaining read filled with witches, demons, and a quirky friend group! I would recommend this to YA audiences!
This graphic novel took me back to my days as a 90s teen carrying out seances and witchcraft with my friends. It's a fun read with likeable characters and an interesting story line that is well rounded out at the end. There were horror aspects to the graphic novel but I felt that it was more of a feel good tale following a group of close knit friends engaging in witchcraft and the trouble that lands them in. I enjoyed this graphic novel.
"Coven" is a graphic novel following four friends as they cast a spell to save a local tree in their town and then things start to go wrong.
This graphic novel was so fun to read through and gives all the spooky vibes. I thought the storyline was good and the little plot twist at the end was nice and leads me to believe this could possibly be a series. I would like it to be one because the four main character are very likeable and each have a distinct personality.
Thank you NetGalley and Europe Comics for this e-arc of "Coven".
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a reader copy.
This was a solid YA graphic novel. There were times the story lagged for me and it was hard to follow. It was also hard at times to read all the really small text.
I also would have liked more character development and why these characters were not friends anymore. Without knowing why they had grown apart, their renewed relationship and working together seemed shallow and unrealistic at how quick they agreed to team up.
This story got better and more interesting as it went on but I still found myself wanting to know more about everyone.
Four friends get back together to practice witchcraft together to save something important to them... I was wanting The Craft.... This ain't it.... Not even close. Fine for what it was... Might be better for a younger audience than me. Illustrations are nice.
I absolutely loved this. It was so fun and the artwork was great. Definitely a fun read for fans of witchy things, it gave me the craft vibes. I’m a bit sad it doesn’t seem to be part of a series.
Coven is a witchy, queer, and coming of age graphic novel. Our main characters find themselves attempting a spell in order to prevent a tree from being cut down, which they do. But in doing so, they open a portal that allows a demon of chaos to seep its way into their lives. From causing them to see things that aren’t really there, to forcing them into a fight over nothing, the demon attempts to break them apart and make them fearful. This is a pretty fast paced, enjoyable novel and I would love to see more of these four witches in another story with a different plot.
4/5 You know how you are sixteen and you and your friends play with witchcraft and you accidentally summon a demon? We’ve all been there!
Honestly, this graphic novel is so reminiscent of being in high school from the witch rituals to the fights between friends that it almost made me miss high school all together! Back when finding a spell book and talking about demons was PRIME sleepover material. The art in this book is truly stunning (sometimes so graphic that it made me jump!) and I would love a whole tarot deck from the artist!
There were some parts that had me confused, parts where it didn’t make sense what happened but could be explained by “the curse” even if that doesn’t make much sense either. I’m gonna need some justice for Diane though!
I love the potential for more and would gladly check out more! If you want a quick and fun read to help you reach your reading goal or as a cleanser between your books, check this out! It’s currently available on NetGalley!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!
This was a graphic novel that centers on four girls that are trying to save a tree by using a spell. It seems to have worked as the tree is no longer a point of demolition. However, bigger issues may have risen due to their activities.
The illustrations were very neat and well done to match the writing. I found the storyline relatively easy to follow. However I just felt like the ending was very abrupt and kind of left me with more questions than before I got to the ending. It does sound like there are more to come, but it also wasn't a very clear cliffhanger type of ending.
I found some pages to be overdone with the "noises" of the text where they spend multiple pages making 'grrrrr' sounds for example.
An enjoyable fun read with original characters. My only complaint is that I want there to be more. I hope there is a sequel.
I want to start this review by saying that I absolutely loved the art!! The details in the drawing were amazing and the colors used really helped set the tone.
I loved the story and how diverse every character was. Their friendship was cute and it was great to have insight to each one of the girl's backstories. I enjoyed seeing their individual stories too. Lily was my favorite. I really enjoyed the writing style because it felt authentic in the way teenagers were portrayed and talked.
Their adventure with magic was fun to read and very entertaining. Overall this was an easy read. The ending felt a little anticlimactic to me, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
I loved this quick, and fun graphic novel! The story was great for teens and YA readers! It was whitty and spooky with very little gore. ( I can only think of one instance of gore and it was pretty tame). The only thing I didn't love was the artists style of facial expressions. All the characters look angry all the time, which makes it a bit difficult to figure out the characters feelings. I would highly recommend this to YA horror fans!
A cute story about some girls who Wang to save a tree, Them chose to try to ude magic, but it May not work as they expectet… something eveil this Way come.
I realy enjoyed The story and The drawings was really good, and perfect style for The story
Fan of both the original craft movie and the recent sequel will enjoy this graphic novel about a group of young Witches stepping into their power. Although it is obvious The Coven is heavily influenced by the craft there is a great twist at the end that makes it worth a read.
A cozy, quick read to satisfy the perpetual need of autumn and witchy stories.
The artwork for this novel was adorable, although some of the colour choices and amount of text in the bubbles was questionable, it was an easy read and relatively easy to follow along with the story.
There wasn’t anything too dark and mysterious, it didn’t have me on the edge of my seat or anything, but, it was enjoyable and lighthearted all the same.
I think if it had been slightly longer so that we could get to know each character just a little better and how they all came together as a group (as the history between them was somewhat unclear- were they always friends? had they drifted apart?) and how they work together, it would have made this a 4 star read for me.
Thank you to Netgalley for gifting me this book!
Posted on Goodreads: I wanted to love this so badly but it just didn’t do it for me. The best part was the references to nostalgic witchy shows from my childhood. The art was cool and I enjoyed how every character was unique in their own way.
Overall though the pacing was off, none of the characters were likable, the twist wasn’t really a twist, and it felt predictable the whole time. Man I really wanted to like the main characters but even with chaos causing them to fight, they weren’t likable to begin with. It felt wordy in a way that felt like filler rather than driving the story. This really made me sad because this is my kind of story.
I wouldn’t say don’t read it but be prepared to be annoyed with everyone but maybe it’ll give you solace that it feels like this is a filler backstory novel to get us to the covens real adventures 🤷🏼♀️
