I'm Fabulous Crab takes it's premise from Moana's villainous Tamatoa- a crab who covers himself in all the bling it can find so it can stand out among the other crabs and the dull ocean floor. The author uses a lot of great rhymes, but perhaps goes too far in her efforts to include challenging vocabulary for the book's intended audience of picture book readers. Having two or three great unique words is always a good idea for children's authors, but including one on every page is overestimating a child's attention span for words and concepts (like an art installation or gallery) that they've never heard of. Most children don't want to stop the action and melody of a rhyming book to ask, what does that mean? repeatedly. Love the illustrations!

A prettily illustrated book....& a story that kids can understand about a crab in the ocean environment. I especially liked the rhyming way it is told. I think it'd be fun to read to kids, & I bet they'd enjoy the fun rhyme too! A good book for any library.... 2 thumbs up!
I received an e-ARC of the book from publisher Flyaway Books via NetGalley, to read & offer my own fair/honest review.

This book has a nice rhythm and rhyme while reading the story. The animations are well done and well-liked by myself and my three-year-old. This is a heartwarming story about a crab who doesn’t fit in. The crab decides to decorate his shell the way that he likes, which later saves himself and the other crabs from some ocean predators. After this event, he is then accepted by the other crabs, who then decide that decorating their shells with shiny bright things is a good idea. This book shows us to be ourselves even when others do not see eye to eye. It also shows us that in time some individuals may come around to accept you for who you are. This book is a good read for any child and for adults out there who are resistant to change. This book would be a good addition to any school or public library.

Henry is tired of being a drab hermit crab who hides on the ocean floor. He wants more so he starts to decorate his shell with brighter objects; he piles on more and more until he is stuck under the weight of all the bling. The other crabs had discouraged this behavior and run off when he asks for help. This is a terrific point for readers to make predictions on why they think the crabs ran off and why Henry feels a sense of dread. Readers may be surprised by who rescues Henry/Fabulous and appreciate the joy in the ending. An encouraging book to be brave and take a risk.
The rhyme scheme works and the illustrations adjust colors to show how brightly Fabulous shines as he builds his design.

This picture book was hilarious throughout, of one crab who didn't want to be mundane. So "Henry" turned "Fabulous" and added jewels and sparkly things to their back, shocking the other crabs. From an octopus to a shark, Fabulous has a high life until everything begins to weigh him down. It's quirky and funny and shows how we can be open to change.

I like the colorful illustrations. The text is too much for a picture book. This book would not go out in our library as I work in a rural Christian area of Pennsylvania. They would see the message as LGBTQ+.and would object.

As a sea life fan, I was very excited to read this book. The illustrations are beautiful and mix of characters (who are more cartoonish) and other sea life in the background that is more realistic. It is colorful and a bit reminiscent of Tamatoa from Moana. A little plot twist around the value of collecting decorations...

What surprised me is there wasn't any back matter -- even a not. Decorator crabs are a real thing (though they are not hermit crabs. They stick anemones and other thinga right on their shell.

This book had such great use of color. The pictures are so lively and fun. This crab wants to put himself out there and he proudly does. It’s a good lesson in being yourself.

I absolutely loved this book! Henry is a hermit crab who wants to stand out from the rest of the crabs - he wants to be fabulous! It was relatable, even as an adult - who doesn't secretly want to be even just a little bit fabulous? I loved how the crabs came around to it at the end and they all shared in some of Henry's bling!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

Henry wants to be different, to stand out from the other hermit crabs. He's jealous of how colorful the other sea creatures are. He spots a shipwreck, and piles on sparkly treasures until they weigh him down so much he can't move. A shark comes by and sees him an art piece, taking his picture.

At first, the other hermit crabs saw his bright display of bling as dangerous, because it would actually attract predators to him, instead of camouflage him like his shell does. But, they learn that a little shine isn't bad, and Henry is able to move again as they each take a little bit of treasure from him for themselves.

Each of us is unique, and we should embrace our differences instead of trying to blend in. Everyone has their own talents and abilities that contribute to their successes and society as a whole. People are inspired by seeing others being truly authentic. It lets them know it's okay to be themselves, that there are other people out there just like them.

Thank you so much to Flyaway Books and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Fabulous Crab is bored of being a Henry so he finds lots of shiny and pretty things to make him stand out becoming Fabulous. His friend scurry away in fear he will get himself eaten leaving him alone.

This was cute and I loved that he wanted to express himself with as many shiny and pretty things he could, but he overdid it and couldn’t do anything after a while. I loved that even though his friends judged him they eventually learnt and realised a little bit of sparkle and colour is never an issue.

I liked the illustrations in this book, seeing the different sea critters, seeing the artsy shark that was funny and most importantly seeing Henry go from drab crab to fabulous crab which was amazing and hilarious. This is a fun book to read and I recommend it, it’s easy and simple and lots of fun.

Students will love the ocean setting of this book and the illustrations are colorful and eye-catching. As a teacher, I love that it is written in verse as it can be difficult to find high-interest books that are.

I'm Fabulous Crab is the perfect children's book to help kids learn to love themselves and be unabashedly different. I will be buying a physical copy for when I have kids, because the message within is very important. It is about courage, confidence, and acceptance. The artwork and color choice reminded me of one of my childhood favorites Rainbow Fish.

I received this book free for review from the publisher through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

Just a dreary old crab wishing he was a bit more shiny!
Get it?
Oh, Henry, the trouble you cause! But a lesson you give in learning to stand out from them all.
A cute read. I think fans of Moana would enjoy it.
