The Out Side: Trans and Nonbinary Comics by The Kao, David Daneman and Min Christensen is a wonderful graphic novel! Serving as an anthology of voices and insight, it provides various stories and messages from different people with different life experiences. This is so important because each person has a different journey in their identity and this book holds space for that.

I loved how each storyteller had their own style, voice, and POV--it clearly came through. Citing the artists/storytellers also provided a really neat opportunity to find creatives to follow and support. The Outside depicts the full gamut of human emotion, as rich and vibrant as the spectrum of folks amongst us.

There is so much one can learn from this book whether you're a member of the community, an ally, a member of a support system, or starting the process to do so.

The more we learn, the more we know, the more we grow. This book demonstrates how accessibility to learning how other people navigate the world can create a more compassionate world.

The Out Side is a necessary comic, one that talks about what it means to be trans or nonbinary. As a cis person, I am not familiar with the experience on a personal level. Yet as trans rights are under attacks, we need more of these stories.

One person finds out their grandfather wore bras in private. Another talks about how it hurts to be called "ma'am" while back home. Each time, a new voice adds to the mix of stories that are getting suppressed in many states. The art also shows a wide spectrum of style, with bright cheery pieces to go with moody ones. And I enjoyed every one.

A wonderful way to explore how important acceptance and variety in gender identity is. I loved the diversity of styles and experiences, and the truth and courage of the contributors in sharing their stories.

Gotta give it up to this book—it helped me mentally work through some gender stuff. Could I be non-binary? It’s more likely than you think!

I liked the diverse stories and hearing how various people worked through their own genders and sexuality. Gender is so beautifully fluid.

I loved this! As a cisgender woman, I try my best to seek out stories like this one to be suppurative for my trans and nonbinary friends and this did not let me down! I loved all the stories, even the ones that made me sad. The art is just too cute as well!

5/5 stars

This a great anthology chronicling so many different artists and their journies of self acceptance! The stories are all quite short, only a handful of pages each, but the stories don't feel like they're missing anything at all. Fantastic and very important read!

The comics in this anthology are short, but filled with emotion and personal experience. This is a quick, but enjoyable read that will be very helpful to anyone who has shared the same struggles as the comic creators included in the volume. I really like the range of art styles, the different angles taken with the topic, and the way it provides a closer, personal look at people's experience with gender dysphoria and self-perception. Beautiful comic anthology!

A collection of trans and nonbinary stories, mostly focused around coming out. I loved looking at all the different art styles and feeling all the queer joy!! I love hearing others view on gender and and how it impacts their lives, made me feel less alone in this world.

The Out Side is a comics anthology of short autobiographical comics from trans/nonbinary comics creators. I couldn't resist reading it once I saw the cover, which is super cute. The collection includes some better known creators (such as Dana Simpson, the author of Phoebe and Her Unicorn and an introduction from Julia Kaye, author of Super Late Bloomer) and some more obscure ones. The stories are relatable, emotional, charming, funny, painful, and everything they can be. It covers a spectrum of types of stories (and art styles too!) that highlight some of the very different things that being trans can mean and the ways that experiencing gender can be specific to the individual while also being a part of a communal experience. Trans people looking for experiences like their own, cis people looking to understand trans people, and people questioning their gender identity will all find this to be a rewarding collection. Recommended!

It is a beautiful collection of personal and emotional stories about the authors' relationships with their gender and where they fit within society.

This one was a hard read for me, but not because it was a difficulty in the language. It was because these stories help one understand. Some of the comics are beautiful about coming out, but some are painful. I think this opens up an important dialogue to people who aren’t a part of the LGBTQ+ community, to hopefully understand.

The Out Side is filled with comics from 29 trans & nonbinary artists as they share their personal journeys of self-discovery and acceptance.

This graphic novel doesn’t just focus on coming out, but some talk about the later processes of their life and what it means for them now.

There’s 29 different artists, so there’s 29 different styles of art and stories. Some I liked more than others, but I still enjoyed and loved this as a whole.

Highly recommend, especially for those who are trans and nonbinary as they will most definitely see themselves within these pages.

This was a nice collection, but many of the comics had poor image quality. It was difficult to read the text on some due to the size and the image compression. Comics were interesting and well done regardless of that issue though!
