Ros and Adam were on holiday in Majorca with their two young daughters. Ros makes friends with Lottie and her young daughter Caitlin and ends up having a drunken night out with her and thinks that she may have confessed a secret to Lottie that she regrets. She decides to forget about it as she won’t be seeing Lottie again. But to Ros’s dismay Lottie turns up at the local school gates and informs Ros that she has moved into the village just around the corner from Ros and that Caitlin will be in the same class as one of her daughters. Why has she moved all this way and ended up in the same village as Ros? Strange things start to happen in Ros’s life and Lottie seems intent on ruining her life. This was a really addictive read and one that I really enjoyed.

I was so excited to get this one, but it took several times for me to finally get into it, and once I did it was missing that extra something. Still a good book!

What happens when a vacation friend shows up as the Mother at Number 5? This new psych thriller by Jill Childs explores female friendships and family secrets.
Of course, nothing is as it actually seems.
Ros is on vacation with her family when she meets Lotte. The two strike up a friendship (as sometimes happens on vacation). Ros figures she’ll never see Lotte again.
Until Lotte shows up outside their children’s school (no that’s not a spoiler).
What follows is a cat and mouse game, with Ros feeling like something isn’t quite right. Why is Lotte there? Did Ros miss something during their initial meeting? Does Lotte have a connection to the area that she neglected to mention?
All of these questions and many more are answered via chapters told from either Ros or Lotte’s points of view. They don’t switch back and forth evenly, more like Lotte’s are interspersed here and there. But it’s always clear who the reader is following.
The author does a really good job of keeping the reader guessing right along with Ros. So much so that when the reveals start to occur and secrets come to light, the reader is probably as shocked as Ros.
I will say that I didn’t think the kids factored heavily into the story – that they were more vehicles for Lotte and Ros to meet. But I was wrong about that. So (fair warning/no spoiler) pay attention to the kids.
The biggest twists at the end were also well done. One, I had kind of guessed at, but another one completely took me by surprise. The author played yet another one kind of close to the chest for a lot of the story, so the revelation was certainly shocking.
The Mother at Number 5 is a solid psych thriller that is an excellent beach read (be careful of who you talk to while on vacation!). I look forward to the next book from Jill Childs.

This is a medium paced thriller. While I found the story to be a but predictable, I really enjoyed going along for the ride as secrets are revealed. There are some twists in this story and the characters are well written. Something about this story just grabbed my attention and kept me turning the page.

I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. Even though this book was predictable, it did have a small twist at the end. I felt like this storyline has been written several times but I guess that's what happens when you tend to read a certain genre. I did like how it was told in parts by the main characters and it was easy to follow the story. I would recommend it.

Thank you to Netgalley for the chance to read this book. This story started off slow but built itself up into a story that twists and turns kept coming and I was invested.

A twisty thriller that had me intrigued from start to finish!
A sudden holiday acquaintance inveigling their way into your life, home, area and friendships!
A sense of discomfort, unease and fear brought about by this new friend unsettling you and your family!
Accusations, slander, molestation and total devastation ensue as long held secrets are revealed, new revelations surface and self defence with devastating consequences!
Loved the characters of Lotte,Diana and Ros and the normality of the school run, working parents and female friendships, however not all is as it seems!
Thank you netgalley fir this early read.

The Mother at Number 5 focuses on Lotte, the mother, and Ros, the neighbour just around the corner. They met during a short holiday in Spain and got drunk together one evening. Ros told Lotte a secret about herself and that’s what the book is all about. It’s a pity Ros cannot remember what the secret was – she was so drunk the night is lost in a blackout – or the book could have been somewhat more interesting. Now it is mainly filled with the two women shuttling their children to school and picking them up, and with panic attacks from Ros. All the while, two of the three children in the story seem to have a problem. It turns out that one of them has a really big problem, and the other somehow figures out how to be more happy.
The reason behind the problematic behaviour of one of the children is rather obvious from the beginning and it takes way too long before the child’s mother comes into action. For the rest there is a lot of drinking – how many books have I read lately with young mothers that do nothing but fussing over the children during the day, and get out and get drunk during the evening? It’s grating a bit on me. Somewhere there must be some nice, sensible women who do more that drinking and serving fries and fish fingers as an evening meal to their children.
I liked the blurb but the story fell short and didn’t meet my expectations.
Thanks to Boukooture and NetGalley for this digital review copy.

This might be the first domestic thriller that had me almost yelling at the page for the protagonist to stop and think about what she was about to do. After sharing drinks with a stranger at a vacation resort and spilling far too many personal details, Ros comforts herself with the thought that she'll never see the other woman again. There's no need to worry about the secrets she told her. Then Lotte buys a house just down the street and enrolls her daughter at the same school Ros's children attend. The ending was a surprise and the journey to get there was an intriguing one.

2.5 stars. I’ve not read anything by this author before but this one sounded good so I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately I found it very slow and it dragged on quite a lot. I couldn’t get into it at all and by the end I didn’t really care what happened.

While I thoroughly enjoyed the revealing of the secrets that tied this story together, I did not enjoy reading graphic details of children being harmed/abused. It's one thing to mention an occurrence and quite another to detail it as it's happening in the story.

During the beginning chapters of this book I was very intrigued and furiously turning the pages to get to whatever twist or turn may lie ahead. Unfortunately, that feeling began to dwindle rather quickly as the turns became more drawn out and just confusing. Instead of subtle hints of danger or disaster ahead it more or less became tedious cliffhanger type chapters that left me even more bewildered than before.
The characters are phenomenal in their own ways but the story leans too hard on dubious matters that aren't really pivotal in the scheme of things. I understand the building up of relationships and how they work together to eventually tear others apart but this was just too much for the story. I liked the premise, who doesn't like revenge thrillers but I feel it could've been better executed in the prose.
