Wow! This was a wild ride! I didn't see the spouses blaming each other! I did, however, see who the culprit was far before the end of the book. That did not ruin it at all for me. This was a great time and I am now adding all of Jessica Payne's backlog of books to my TBR!

The Good Doctor is a standalone medical-based psychological thriller in which a medical professional finds her misdeeds come back to haunt her just when she feels like she has managed to escape her nefarious past and equally bad associations. Chloe Woods has never believed that she deserved a second chance after being involved in something three years ago that she still feels incredibly conflicted and guilty about, but redemption seems to have come her way and she is not about to throw that opportunity away. Chloe and her fiance Elton are about to settle down after deciding to relocate from Southern California to Portland, Oregon, where they plan to marry, have a beautiful three-bedroom new home awaiting them and where she has landed her dream job - as a nurse practitioner in the Intensive Care Unit at nearby Portland General Hospital.

Fast forward to her first day at the new hospital and she's excited that after ten years as a nurse, she is now a fully certified nurse practitioner giving her a lot more responsibility for patients. But she soon realises she will be working under her ex-husband, doctor and former Seattle resident Jameson who has inexplicably ended up employed by the same hospital; and she is absolutely shell-shocked. They had once had the perfect marriage, but when Chloe's brother Nathan, had been diagnosed with ALS it had led to irreconcilable differences between them based on the fact that Nathan desired the help of a physician to commit suicide to end his chronic suffering. So when the hospital death rate becomes much higher than it should, Chloe wonders if Jameson's sympathetic views on medical euthanasia have been implemented.

They are both asked to look back over the hospital records for the past six months to try and account for the rise, but can Chloe keep her secret past hidden, still make her dream life happen and find out the truth about the death toll? This is a compulsive thriller that opens right into the midst of the action rather than a long build-up, yet it has been structured in such a way that there are twists galore once you get a little way into the story. It's fast-paced, and although I guessed a few surprises along the way, there were a few that still came as a shock to me which is essential to my enjoyment. Thrillers involving those in authority positions and/or positions of trust/power are nearly always exciting and disturbing purely due to that sentiment alone and this one is no different. It also (re-)ignites the debate over euthanasia and whether it is acceptable or not, however, a doctor taking it upon themselves randomly to do so is quite a dangerous prospect. Easy and gripping enough to tear through in a single sitting, this is a thought-provoking and twisty-turny yarn with interesting characters and a satisfying climax.

Told from the main characters perspectives, following mainly Chloe and her new job where she intends to settle down with her fiancé Elton, seeing her ex Jameson leaving past events in question for all parties. But is all as it first appears?…

There is a contents warning at the start of this book, ‘contains fatal illness and physician assisted suicide. If these are potentially sensitive topics for you, please read with care’.

Sadly you could imagine some of these events actually happening, in some ways not what I expected, great read.

Thank you to NetGalley, Jessica Payne, and Bookouture for an ARC copy of The Good Doctor.
It's a gripping and suspenseful psychological thriller that will keep you engrossed from beginning to end. The pacing is excellent and engaging, with the suspense steadily building as the plot unfolds. It's filled with unexpected twists and turns that kept me reading to uncover the truth.

Chloe as a character was enjoyable, but I would have liked to see her take a more rational approach to her suspicions. Regardless of whether she was right or wrong, it appeared that she jumped to conclusions without gathering substantial evidence or sharing her concerns with anyone.

With its well-crafted plot, complex characters, and relentless suspense, this book kept me guessing and suspicious until the very end. I highly recommend adding it to your reading list while I eagerly await Jessica Payne's next book.

Whew! What a ride! Chloe is ready to settle down with her fiance Elton. They both have new jobs at Portland General Hospital, and everything seems to be going great until Chloe's first day of work, when she discovers her ex-husband Jameson also works at the same hospital. Jameson holds the darkest secrets of Chloe's past, and is the antithesis of the stats quo life she wants with Elton. As the past barges more ad more into her present, Chloe is forced to reconcile her role in their secret, and learns some shocking other truths along the way.

This is everything you want from a medical thriller! And, the author is a nurse herself, so so many of the details are inspired from someone who actually worked in a hospital.

This third novel from Jessica Payne is full of secrets, twists, and constantly building supsense.

Quick paced, short chapters that identify the POV of the main characters kept me flying through the intrigue. I totally didn’t see the ending coming. The subject matter of medical assisted suicide might be a sensitive subject/issue for some readers. I liked it.
Thank You to NetGalley, Bookouture, and Jessica Payne for the opportunity to read this ARC.

I finally have everything I’ve ever wanted: a career saving lives, my dream home among the pines, and my caring fiancé, Elton. He doesn’t know about my past. And I’ll do anything to keep it that way…

I’m so excited for my life with Elton—we’ve even discussed which room would make the perfect nursery. And we’re working together in our new jobs in the ICU at Portland General hospital.

But when I walk in on my first day, I see my ex-husband Jameson. His familiar broad shoulders are unmistakable in his white doctor’s coat. The shock knocks the air from my lungs.

I’m thrown back to the moment Jameson and I gathered around that hospital bed as the steady beeping on the monitor slowed.

We did something unforgivable that day.
And for the first time, I saw who Jameson truly was.
The truth scared me more than I can explain.
So I ran.

If Jameson tells Elton what I did, I’ll lose everything. Will he destroy my new, perfect life? Is he still a danger to the innocent patients all around us? And how far will I have to go to stop him?

This is the third Jessica Payne book I have read and I’ve loved each one. I love her writing style, she manages to keep your attention all the way through, which is rare. Usually, there is a lull you have to get through, to get back to the good bit, but so far I haven’t found this to be true with her books. Jessica Payne is an automatic buy for me and one of my favourite authors.

This is the first medical thriller that I have read, and I was slightly sceptical when I first read the book description, but I found myself really enjoying the hospital setting along with the personal drama and the many twists that kept me wanting to find out more!

My thanks to the author and Bookouture for my advance copy to read and review via Netgalley. Due out 14th June 2023.

This was a good read. The cliffhanger chapter endings kept me wanting to read and I loved the alternating POV. It was an interesting medical thriller. I figured out whodunnit early on but the way it was written kept me vested in the outcome.

Thanks to NetGalley, Jessica Payne and Bookouture for my digital copy of this book.

The mortality rate of patients is very high in this hospital... and it follows a pattern. A very suspicious and abnormal one. New nurse practitioner Chloe had escaped this life a few years ago, ran away and rebuilt her life far away. But now she's pulled back into this... the same situations and with the same people. She has a pretty strong suspect. But really, who's the true killer?

This started out very cliche. It was a bit slow but i didn't mind it. The author gave enough mystery to keep going. I can tell that the author meant to confuse and throw her readers off. I thought that there was a lot of effort put in to blame and point to one person. I expected the twist. But the twist in the twist?? ... no. This was pretty enjoyable. Not "edge of my seat" kind but I was nervous for the most part of this book. It made it extra real too since I do work in a hospital. Although I'm not a nurse or a doctor, I do work closely with them and I do go into the ICU. The plot was too close to my real life which made it more exciting.

Thank you netgalley and Bookouture for a free e-copy of this book. I enjoyed it.

This is a fast paced medical thriller that will have you questioning just about everything and everyone while steadily building the tension and suspense the more you read. I really enjoyed the dual POV and that it had a bit of a romantic suspense feel along with the mystery/psychological thriller plot line. Definitely an entertaining book that you can devour in one sitting. 3.5⭐️

Chloe’s life is going well. She recently relocated to Portland with her fiancé, Elton, purchased a new home, a new car, and landed a job as a nurse practitioner in the ICU. She couldn’t be happier.

However, her first day at the hospital takes an unexpected turn when she discovers that she will be working alongside her ex-husband, Jameson Smith. There’s a history between them, a reason she ended their marriage and fled from him. Now, forced to collaborate closely, Chloe fears her carefully constructed life might unravel. She can’t expose him for what she believes he’s doing without exposing something from her past as well.

Jameson, known as “Dr. Death,” has gained notoriety for advocating legal euthanasia, believing in the right to die with dignity. Chloe suspects he has taken his beliefs to extreme measures, turning into a medical serial killer. Determined to uncover the truth, she engages in secretive investigations, walking a dangerous path while also guarding her own hidden secret from Elton.

The narrative skillfully presents a dual point of view and dual timelines, weaving an intriguing tale. The concept of a medical serial killer adds an extra layer of suspense to the story, keeping readers engaged. Although I did figure out the ending, the book still managed to surprise me with various other twists

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an ARC in exchange for my honest review, and Thriller Book Lovers Promotions for allowing me to be a part of this tour!

Another great thriller by Jessica Payne!
Her books always had me on edge and interested from the beginning until the end. Make sure you read the trigger warnings before reading this book because the topic may be sensitive to some of you.

The plot is interesting, with the mystery and the medical background. The writing style is easy to read and the author discussed the sensitive topic in this story really well.
The pacing is good and the short chapters makes me keep flipping the pages to know more.

The characters are suspicious and comes with a complex history and relationships.
I find it hard to know who to trust cause each of them have their own secrets.
Not just a mystery suspense story, it also comes with a dash of swoon-worthy and angsty romance!

While I manage to guess the twist early on, it doesn’t hinder my enjoyment for reading this one. I actually feel like I win something knowing I was right!
However, I would have like more explanation regrading the killer’s motive and adding the killer’s POV would have been great as well.

Overall, this is a gripping fast-paced psychological thriller. The idea is also unique, there’s not a lot of medical serial killer story out there so this one was a breath of fresh air for me.

I’m enjoying my time reading to find out the truth and figure out who’s the culprit, I would recommend it for those who love to read thrillers with medical background then you’ll have to check this one out!

It’s a good thing Chloe, the main character, couldn’t see my facial expressions as I read since I scowled a lot.
I kept thinking for someone who has so much education and experience she possessed little common sense.
How could she take a job where she was workin alongside her ex husband?? And why was she spending so much time with him???
Turns out I was the dunce because Payne bamboozled me very well with who the culprit was.
Coding in book land!!!

A medical serial killer and a nursing practitioner who can’t tell anything to anyone? Well this is the kind of thrillers that promises a fast read. And it actually did.

Chloe and Elton are finally settling down with a ring on her finger, a new car and a home to their name. Portland is the city that attracted them to settle down where they both will have secure positions, unlike their times as travel nurses. But on the first day, all the dreams that they built together starts to shake when Chloe realises that she has to work with Dr. Jameson, her ex-husband from Seattle who she left after she realises who he is. Chloe struggles with her work because the past comes crashing to her in the form of same situations being repeated in the same ward as her past. She starts doubting Jameson is scared that her life might be in danger. Being unable to tell anyone, including Elton, Chloe tries to frame and make Jameson confess. What is Chloe right?

This was a creepy book with so many situations that made me turn my head and look through my window! It radiated fear every time Jameson appeared in the book, with POVs from past and present giving the same eerie vibe. I liked the protagonist and her determination to catch the culprit. Although I actually figured out the killer way before, it was nonetheless a shock to read the circumstances surrounding it. A great book to read especially if you are a thriller fan!

Although I'm the type of reader who's usually immune to hooks and taglines, the one for The Good Doctor (Grey's anatomy with murder) was accurate in the best way possible. If you're fan of medical dramas with compelling characters make sure you pick up this one! If like me, you consume a lot of psychological thrillers odds are you'll figure out the twist early on but that did not take away from my reading journey at all because I was so immersed in Chloe/Jameson drama.

Chloe is just about to start a new job (and a new life) as a nurse practitioner at a Portland hospital her fiance also got a job at. They bought a new home, are planning their wedding. The only snag being that Chloe's new job surprisingly involves working with her ex-husband Jameson. The two share quite a history. And a number of secrets...

I loved the setting, concept, writing but most of all I was there for the characters and relationships. I am sure I won't be the only one who founds a new book boyfriend in The Good Doctor. Though this book deals with some heavy topics (trigger warnings included in the book) I found it to be a quick and engaging read, something you'd like to add to your summer reading list.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

I am a fan of this author’s work but this one is not my favourite …. Overall story is well written except it did feel a little repetitive from the main narrator’s POV .

I did guess the big “twist” at the end , mainly because I just couldn’t see what else could be happening - but I still enjoyed the journey to the end
