For those who like super-cute and whimsical
Author, designer and self-taught illustrator with a passion for drawing cute characters Ilaria Ranauro presents her book "Draw Kawaii Style. A Beginner's Step-by-Step Guide for Drawing Super-Cute Creatures, Whimsical People, and Fun Little Things - 62 Lessons: Basics, Characters, Special Effects", published by Quarto Publishing Group – Quarry. The book contains 62 lessons that can be found in two parts: 1) Kawaii essentials (includes Getting Started; Proportions; Drawing Kawaii: Human Characters, Animal Characters, Object Characters; Facial Expressions, and Finding Your Own Style); and 2) Kawaii Characters, Step-by-Step (includes 55 characters divided into Animals, Peoples, Food, and Objects). Her recommendation for the readers are: "As I share in this book, when you decide that you want to learn how to draw, you need to establish a practice that includes three things: observing other artists’ work, creating a routine that lets you draw every day, and allowing yourself the time to make ugly art so you can experiment and improve!" in Introduction). Her hope for the readers is: "I hope this book will ignite your curiosity and teach you about the kawaii style, inspire you to create your own characters, and help you develop a love of drawing (in Introduction).
Ranauro gives a good explanation for Kawaii. She points out the differences between Kawaii style and Manga style and shows as well with a drawing what is not Kawaii style. The book is well written. The teaching is accompanied by tips and by clear designs. I highly recommend the book for beginners as well as for those who look for new ideas for drawing in the Kawaii style.
The complimentary copy of this book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley free of charge. I was under no obligation to offer a positive review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Very well written with good pictures to help you learn a new drawing skill. Simple enough for youth but great for adults also.

This is a lovely beginner's guide to steps for drawing Kawaii style. The guide first provides the first seven lessons to learn the technique. It details 55 fun characters, including a rainbow and a watermelon slice.

This book is a great book for those trying to learn to draw Kawaii style. I have two kids who love to draw, and both of them enjoyed learning from this book. We used chalk and made some fun animals on our driveway. Would recommend for those learning to draw this style!

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC in exchange of my review.
First of all, I have to say that I am really bad at drawing and have no talent whatsoever. But, I like to try ! And this book gave me clear step by step instructions and really cute designs ! I like the way the book was presented and I think it can be use by everyon, either to improve your skills in a different style or if like me you just want to impress yourself with something to draw.

A fantastic little book that I found very pleasurable to follow. Still need a lot more practice though, but it was loads of fun!
Thanks to NetGalley, the editor and the author for the opportunity to access this ARC.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Deaw Kawaii Style is a fantastic step by step guide book to drawing Kawaii Style. My daughter had great fun with this book and found the instructions easy to follow and achievable, too. Kawaii is such a fun and cute art to draw, and I can't wait to do some more. The book includes so many different subjects/things to draw and includes alternative sketch/drawing ideas throughout the book, too. This is great for all levels of drawing and sketching for children and adults alike.

Very cute book and lovely illustrations!
I would have loved some more tips. The book is nicely done, but it might not be suitable for complete beginners.

This is so cute! I have 7 year old twins and it’s been fun to draw with them. They liked looking at these pages and practicing everything.

This book is a nice intro into this style of drawing.

My kids ranging from 9-4 all enjoyed trying the examples. It would be suitable for kids aged 7 upwards.

The book is nicely set out with lots of different animals and cute objects examples to draw.

Draw Kawaii Style by Ilaria Ranauro

My daughter LOVES anything and everything Kawaii, so when I saw a new book for beginners I just had to take a stab at it for myself!

The first handful of pages are awesome, and stand out to me in having thumbed through many other kawaii drawing books I’ve purchased for my daughter. It’s nice to learn some history on the Kawaii drawing style, basic drawing tips/tricks, and the author’s favorite creative tools so you can get started.

Once I got into the drawings I felt like there weren’t enough steps/guidance for true beginners. If I opened this book as a true beginner I would feel discouraged seeing an animal with details in 3 steps first thing vs a drawing that appears towards the back of a simplistic food item with 4 steps. The animals and humans feel a tad rushed step wise, but the food and objects were well directed for a beginner.

I really enjoyed the alternative sketch to encourage trying different things, and an example of every drawing colored in. Be sure to pay attention to the tips strewn throughout the book! There is some really good and cute advice!!:)

Overall this author/illustrator had a well thought out approach to learning to draw in a Kawaii style! I really enjoyed learning more about the backstory, and learning some new drawings. The Witch, Painter, Pumpkin, and Watermelon were my favorites to draw, and I tried my hand at the different proportions and facial expressions. I look forward to trying more of these drawings and seeing what other fun books Ilaria comes out with in the future.

4.5/5 stars, rounded up.

Thank you NetGalley, Quatro Publishing Group, and of course the talented Ilaria Ranauro for the temporary eARC. All opinions are my own.

The illustrations in the book are adorable! I love the characters and animating traditionally inanimate objects. I will say that I did not feel this was for beginners as it is marketed. There are only a few steps for each character with a lot happening in each step. As a more seasoned doodler, I loved it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

I'm going to preface this by saying I teach kindergarten. They would not benefit from this book. I would say some grade 2 students could follow the steps if they were done as a directed drawing by an adult. Older children would be able to follow independently.

I really like how there are some instructional components that are helpful to understand the Kawaii style of drawing, such as the proportions of the style. There are some different ways of drawing the different characters (with shirts, in different positions) that allow for some cute extensions. I love the variety of characters - animals, people, food, and random objects (pencil, acorns). I love it. I can't wait to have a physical copy so I can refer to it often when journalling.

Very easy step by step but ir lacks some tips or how to apply color and shading. In that style of art i think is very important the coloring part and only shows you how to make the line.

This is a cute beginner's guide to Kawaii, with a hard emphasis on beginner

I loved the first section, lots of helpful info about placement and style. Sadly this section is very small, and the majority of the book is breakdowns of specific drawings. This would be great for a young beginner, but if someone already has basic drawing skills then I think they'd be a bit disappointed.

I'd suggest it's ideal for a 6-10 yr old who's just showing an interest in cartoon-style drawing

I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley, on the expectation that I would provide an honest review.

This was so adorable. Nothing really new, but very well done and definitely inspiring the reader to create some cute characters themselves. Easily followed instructions and a wide variety of examples.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

There’s something about cute drawings that literally draw and attract people, and this is a very good book to learn how to draw them. I like that besides the step by step instructions with pictures, the book also starts with some basic “rules” on how to make anything kawaii. The colored final result would also be useful for those who want to color their creations.

This book offers a fun guide for those who enjoy making sweet drawings. Included in this title are over 60 lessons, starting with a helpful introduction. Following this are step-by-step instructions on how to draw a variety of animals, people, objects and foods. Choose your favorites. I liked the gardener, the baby and Kimono Girl, and also the cupcake, Ramen noodle bowl and cake slice. Finally, I also liked the umbrella and teapot. Make your own picks, get out your colored pencils and get ready for some enjoyable me time.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
