An interesting read about the author’s experience as a peace corps worker in Paraguay and the range of people that he meets during his time living there as well as the experiences he has.

Thank you to Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) & NetGalley for sharing this title~ White Cloud Free is a the semi/mostly autobiographical debut from Peter Michael Johnson which follows Peter, a peace corps worker based in Paraguay who, after witnessing a horrific tragedy, must flee his village. The majority of his book follows his journey and the people he meets along the way-- a priest, a homeless boy, and a transgender sex-worker. Years later in mid-life, Peter returns to Paraguay for closure. I will only comment on the writing since it is difficult to comment on the merit of the plot of someone's life? I enjoyed the writing style-- there was a comfortability and intimacy in the way the story was told, while also offering moments of poignancy and reflection on the human experience that made it more than only a recounting. I was worried this book would come off as white-savior-y/exploitative like many stories of its kind end of being, but I felt it was much more human than that, however, I would be curious to know how someone much closer to the the subjects of this story might feel and would take their word for it over mine.
