My goodness Camille is infuriating. You're willing to die because your boyfriend said "please don't wear that thing because it'll kill you" but it's YOUR CHOICE SO YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT AND LITERALLY ALLOW YOUR BRAIN TO MELT BECAUSE GOD FORBID SOMEONE TRIES TO HELP YOU. CAN'T HAVE PEOPLE HELP YOU BECAUSE YOU HAD TO WORK FOR WHAT YOU HAVE.

These two should not have ended up together. They do not communicate. This story had the ability to be interesting, but in the end, it just dragged on. and on. and on. and on. I think it was too heavy handed on the hot button topics of today, only to come full circle and have exactly what Camille hated about Ward happen to her.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers at Berkley for providing this digital ARC in return for an honest review.

With most anything-fantasy related, sign me up. Throw in a dash of star-crossed exes, (enemies to lovers is gold but exes reuniting holds its’ own), and I’m onboard.

We open to a prologue set ten years in the past, with two cruel, exacting voices plotting and simpering before landing on two drunk, stumbling mortals as their newest chess pieces.

Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay come back together after disagreeing on their future and breaking up. Both are embarking on new jobs - Ward in a secretive antiquities world with a limited (and possibly mythical) clientele; Camille a curiosities establishment catering to….unique clientele.

Set in a game managed by ancient gods, Ward and Camille must defy the odds and outfit the game.

Unfortunately, I found this book to drag on and on, the story felt repetitive and contained a lot of fluff about how each character felt about the other, their good qualities etc. stated over and over again. The writing was good overall but the plot left me wanting.

Quirky, funny, not very complicated.
Ex-lovers Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay accidentally end up in London, both interviewing for a job in an antics store. Both get hired and find themselves in a strange magical predicament. Now they must find a way out and figure out if they see a future together.
It was an easy read but I was disappointed how well everything tied together in the end. All the buildup, and the story just sort of petered out in the end, giving everybody a nice tidy happy ending.
Some moments annoyed me: Camille continues to use a headdress that is killing her in order to get 5 minutes of telepathic conversation with Ward. When Ward conspires to destroy the headdress after realizing she will not stop using it on her own, Camille gets upset and feels betrayed. Really?
The magical creatures could be a bit more interesting. I think having more of them could also be nice.
I think this is a great premise that could work really well as a series or a movie. As a book, it was a nice but forgettable read.

Thank you for the ARC, NetGalley!

I have been excited about this book since I read the description! I'm not really sure what to say about it now that I've read it. I was, of course, thrilled to get an ARC to review so I dove into reading it right away. It starts out pretty strong as Ward and Camille are introduced right as they are reunited as a couple. Their passion for one another is clear, although at this point we don't know why they have been apart. They are fairly quickly separated again, however, and stuck in their respective buildings as the book blurb describes. It takes them a while to figure out what the heck is going on and as they do, they try to come up with a plan to escape.

I think what I was disappointed in with this book is that I expected it to be a book full of excitement and longing. Instead, the characters felt somewhat irritated with one another throughout the book, despite stating they missed one another. The book is filled with illusions to scary consequences, but they never really suffer any of these things. The story just sort of unfolds and concludes. I kept waiting for really high-stakes moments, or for the characters to break down or do something wild to happen. It just ... doesn't.

That being said, I liked the story. It kept me reading; I wanted to know what happened and why. It just wasn't the story I felt like I was going to be getting from the blurb and the story I felt like it could have been.

I’m not normally one for fantasy, but the premise here was just too cool to pass up. I loved every minute. This was a fun, unique and exciting reading experience. I had moments where I felt I really related to the characters. And the story was just so good.
Roselle Lim is on my radar now ❤️.

"Night for Day" by Roselle Lim is a powerful and moving fantasy novel that weaves together the elements of destiny, love, and the supernatural. The story revolves around Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay, who, after breaking up to pursue their dream jobs on opposite sides of the country, unexpectedly reunite in London.

The narrative unfolds as Ward and Camille find themselves interviewing for similar jobs, only to discover that they got the positions working opposing shifts. The spark between them is reignited, and they decide to give their relationship another chance. However, their love story takes an unexpected turn when Ward finds himself trapped in the building after the day shift, and Camille faces a similar predicament after her night shift. Despite being physically separated, they discover that they can communicate a few minutes before dawn.

The novel introduces a fascinating supernatural element, where Ward and Camille are caught in the middle of a war of the gods. The consequences of their choices will not only determine the course of their relationship but also play a crucial role in the outcome of the divine conflict.

Lim's storytelling is rich and evocative, creating a vivid and atmospheric world. The concept of fleeting communication between the protagonists before dawn adds a layer of anticipation and longing to their relationship. The immortal clientele and the challenges they face during their respective shifts contribute to the fantasy elements of the narrative.

The characters are well-developed, and the emotional depth of their connection is palpable. The novel explores themes of destiny, sacrifice, and the enduring nature of love. The war of the gods serves as a backdrop, adding an epic dimension to the story.

"Night for Day" is a beautifully crafted fantasy romance that blends supernatural elements with a poignant love story. Roselle Lim's ability to seamlessly integrate the fantastical and the emotional makes this novel a compelling read. Fans of fantasy romance with a touch of the supernatural will find "Night for Day" to be an enchanting and immersive experience.

Two people destined to be together, but to never see each other again, fight against the greatest odds in this powerful and moving fantasy novel. I loved that this is described this way because it really is a powerful and moving story. I quickly fell in love with the characters and the world building. 10/10

I've read and enjoyed all of Roselle Lim's previous books, each with likeable characters and a bit of magic. This one is totally different. The characters refer to it as like an escape room, but it seemed more like a very long episode of the Twilight Zone to me. Ward and Camille broke up several years ago, and meet again in London when both accept jobs there. The work places turn out to be very peculiar: Camille's clients are all ghosts, and Ward's are gods. And there's a catch--they are trapped there. I found the plot concerning East and West factions confusing, and I didn't like any of the characters, which is a deal-breaker for me in fiction. I hope Roselle Lim goes back to her earlier style. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

It’s a second chance romance where “they were perfect except they had to live on other sides of the country for their jobs.” I guess, sure, be pragmatic, but if you’re “destined” to be together and “perfect in every way” yet neither is willing to compromise on location, then are you really perfect? Because relationships take love and compromise. And now you just happen to both be in London, but when someone’s job is back in the US? Then what? And thus, I’m having to suspend my disbelief right out of the gate.

I stopped after chapter 1 (7%). It does read very well, and it was easy enough to follow along.

Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC.

Two soulmates may find their way to each other against all odds, even in the middle of an earth-shattering gods' war as both of them are trapped in their workspaces.

This smart, unusual, and extremely creative fantasy romance makes us question what's most important in a person's life, how a person can learn from past mistakes, outgrow their flaws, and embrace self-growth to take another chance in life. Ward Dunbar and Camille Buhay are the perfect example of opposites attracting. Ward comes from a wealthy family and never had to fight for anything, born with a silver spoon. He's an optimist, a charmer, social, romantic, and easy-going, while Camille is a pessimist, a skeptic, an introvert, a hard worker, and someone who had to fight for everything she's earned.

Two years ago, they parted ways, which caused the biggest heartbreak they had ever endured. Fortunately, fate brings them back together in London when both of them apply for jobs at the same time. Their chance meeting at a bookstore leads to an intimate reunion in a hotel room. They decide to give their relationship another chance as they both get approval for the jobs they applied for. Ward applies for the day shift, while Camille applies for the night shift, highlighting their polar opposite personalities that attract them to each other like magnets.

Their jobs are unique. Camille helps cross over ghosts in exchange for buying their memories, while Ward sells jewelry and artifacts to the ancient Gods. They also have to deal with their eccentric bosses. Camille befriends the kind-hearted Mr. Samson, who often seems confused about where he is, while Ward struggles to charm the spiteful, survivalist, and tight-lipped Ms. Selene. Let's not forget that there's an epic war between Western and Eastern gods, and the couple has no idea that they are the chosen ones who hold the fate of humanity by determining the winner of the war. They also find themselves trapped in their workspaces without any possible means of connecting with each other, except for the magical instruments the Gods present in exchange for something vulnerable.

They must defy the odds, find a way to escape from the wild, magical, and dangerous places where they are kept prisoner. These places are plucked out of the most outlandish fantasies, filled with gods, ghosts, magic, and dangerous immortal bargains.

Can they find their way to each other, defeating the gods' ulterior motives and solving the mystery surrounding time and chaos for their second chance at love? You'll have to grab your copy to find out and enjoy this thrilling and fascinating journey!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for providing me with a digital review copy of this wonderful book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

It was really interesting to watch an author try so many exciting things in one novel. Different tense POVs in one book, having the couple so separated, the twists and turns from the gods, the second chance elements. Definitely a very original concept

I have loved Roselle Lim's books in the past! This one is different. While I did enjoy it very much it did not have the same cozy feel that her other books have had. This is a fantasy novel. While I really did enjoy this book, it was great, I was hoping that she would include some of the cozy vibes that her other books have given me.
