A thoughtful collection of helpful passages to calm the mind and soul. A great gift for most anyone.

Unfortunately I was not able to finish this book in the time I had it. I did enjoy many of the devotions, especially as an overthinker! My only true critique is that I felt the devotions that were summaries of specific books of the Bible did not fit with the overall theme of the book.

I chose to give this book 3 stars simply because I did not finish.

This devotional is very generic. There are devotionals on each book of the Bible, but they are all very similar to each other. Nothing in this book was super thought-provoking for me. It was just fine.

I really love The Overthinker's Devotional: Meditations, Scripture, and Prayers for Refocusing Your Thoughts by JoAnne Simmons! The Overthinker's Devotional is a beautifully written devotion that is thought provoking and helps us stay focused on what is True, by turning our mind towards Scripture. I love what I learned through the devotional and used it as part of my devotion time. (I even read more than one devotion entry most days.) I highly recommend The Overthinker's Devotional: Meditations, Scripture, and Prayers for Refocusing Your Thoughts. It Ministered to me and I believe it will Minister to you too. Thank you to NetGalley and Publisher for the opportunity for the read this book! My review is also on Goodreads.

I guess this author and I have different views on what "overthinking" means, so this book was not at all what I expected. As a neurodivergent individual who can think about nearly anything from 42 different perspective points, I find that overthinking - complex thinking - is a gift that God has given me, and I was hoping this would be a devotional that would invite me deeper into overthinking the things of God. Neurotypical folk might say I was expecting to get to "geek out" on the Bible in new and exciting and deep and overthinking ways.

Instead, this is a book that condemns overthinking as a pathology. The short devotionals, which contain very, very little content, either invite the overthinker to shift their focus and read a specific book of the Bible at length...or explain to the overthinker why the Bible says their thinking pattern is wrong and broken and that they should fix it. It doesn't give much practical advice on fixing it - it really only tells you that it's wrong to overthink because overthinking causes worry and anxiety and isn't compatible with faith. For me, though, overthinking soothes anxiety and worry. So again, maybe that's a perspective thing.

Many of us in the world are very proud overthinkers who are not broken and who love the mental challenge of deeply exploring ideas and throwing concepts around. So perhaps what this book needs is either 1) a new title, to reflect the condemnation of anxiety contained therein or 2) a subtitle that explains, at least, that this is not a devotional intended for proud overthinkers who know their overthinking is exactly the way that God made them and that it is a gift. Because for folks like me, this book - picked up in error and misunderstanding - is extremely condescending, which I know was probably not the author's intent.

As a psychology major once-upon-a-time, I would say that for the intended audience, the book is probably a miss, too. It reminds me of the old Bob Newhart sketch where he plays a psychiatrist and all he can say to his clients, when they confess their anxieties and fears and worries, is, "Stop it." That's kind of the tone I get from this book. It really says nothing more than, essentially, "stop it." And if it were that easy to stop being an anxious, pathological-type overthinker, I imagine most folks would have already done that by now.

My mind has been known to spiral. Or get caught in a thought. Or have conversations in my brain that have not even happened yet. So much energy can be spent trying to keep all my ducks in a row. I want to know the plan and be prepared for all contingencies, just in case. This devotional is a great tool and reminder for so many Scriptural Truths that have been provided to overcome this very issue. I was encouraged and challenged to take my thoughts captive and focus on whatsoever is True. I highly recommend for all overthinkers!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.

Great Book

The author discusses overthinking, what it is, some possible causes, and provides over eighty devotionals to helper overthinkers refocus their mind from whatever worries, problems, or anxieties one may be experiencing.

The devotionals range from reading scriptures more, praying more and being more grateful, from constant wondering about things to learning to forgive, to renew your mind, to stop grumbling and complaining, and many more different topics to help put our mind at ease. Additionally, along with each devotional, the author provides scriptures to meditate on, and various prayers to seek God's help.

This is a very good book of devotionals and I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately the formatting of this book didn't work for my app. I got multiple pages, which were cut in the middle and missing bits. As such, I was only able to skim read it. I agree with another reviewer, that this book is not for those people who are heavy overthinkers.

This was more a daily devotional that encouraged you to focus on God. The topics that I read were good.

I receive complimentary books for various sources including, Netgalley, Authors, and other such sources. I am not required to write a positive review and have not received compensation.

JoAnne Simmons has a track record of wanting people to have their minds healed by Jesus. Ms. Simmons is a veteran author for Barbour Publishing and has a knack for writing in such a way that is intelligible to a wide range of ages and educational backgrounds (1 Cor 14:9-12). This can be seen from her previous titles of "Bedtime Blessings and Prayers for Courageous Girls" and "Prayers and Promises for Boys: 200 Days of Inspiration and Encouragement."

The Overthinker's Devotional is like a balm in Gilead to those who can't shut off their brain. At first glance the cover, font, and artwork are beautiful and calming. Right away in the introduction the tone is set when the author states: "...Overthinking, even with the best intentions, is just a slight step away from worry and anxiety...We who tend to overthink just can't suddenly stop--not on our own. And so we must go constantly to the one who can truly help us think well and wisely." This book isn't about trying harder. Instead it teaches you to use your gift of thinking in a Spirit empowered and God honoring way as he is the one who gifted you with thought. Each devotional starts with a Scripture verse with a variety of translations, then a small application and most importantly a prayer. The length of the devotions are meaty but they avoid being burdensome so this can be done in the morning, before bed or when you catch yourself overthinking in the middle of the day.

Overall The Overthinker's Devotional is great to help you re-center yourself and go to the one who is omniscient and cares for you. You'll come away thinking that overthinking isn't bad because it allows us to ponder God's thoughts after him and be content with the One who has perfect knowledge.

Each Day Brings a New Nugget To Hold Onto!

I really felt this was helpful to read each day and meditating on it whenever my mind began to go off to that place of overthinking! Each day had scripture, a short devotional and a prayer. I could see this being a gift for a friend or a loved one. You don’t have to be struggling to appreciate this book.

I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley on behalf of the Publisher and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.

"The Overthinker's Devotional" by JoAnne Simmons is a great source for someone who only has a couple of minutes and would like Biblical insight surrounding a variety of topics. The devotions are very brief, and thus they don't go into much depth at all. Each devotional starts with a Bible verse or passage and ends with a prayer. If you're someone who is looking for a brief, daily reminder, this is a good book. But as a Bible study, I found it to be too lacking in depth and details.
I received an advanced readers copy from NetGalley, and these opinions are all my own.

I can't read the file, so can't review the book.

The Send to Kindle version doesn't format the file properly - it is landscape instead of portrait, it looks as though the book is a series of pictures rather than text, and there is a big white box covering a block of text in the middle of each day's devotional rendering it unreadable.

I can't read the downloaded acsm file at all.

"...you'll learn a little about each of the books (of the Bible) individually to help you understand... and grow..."
This book is more than a devotional, it is a quick study that encompasses the books of the Holy Bible. Focusing on those of us who tend to overthink anything and everything these short devotions encourages us to have a closer walk with God using that over thinking gift of a mind. There are reminders that we deal with an enemy who wants to sabotage us with our propensity to overthink, stress and question ourselves, or even God.
I received the advanced reader's copy of JoAnne Simmons' book from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley and this is my own personal opinion. I am an over thinker which can lead to overwhelming hours of trying to figure things out. These devotionals remind me to give things over to God (sometimes not easy), let go and pray for clarity. It is all too easy to keep a racing mind overburdened with stress, too many things, on and on. These daily scripture verses, short meditations and prayer prompts help guide the reader to slow down, think in a more calming way. I think as we approach the 2023 holiday season that this would make for a nice gift for that one who dwells on things, stresses and can use a calming reminder to give it to God.

This is a helpful devotional with doable tips and wise suggestions along with daily prayers and scripture references. There doesn't seem to be anything groundbreaking here, and honestly, I was hoping for a deeper dive that would tackle the hard issues and be geared toward those readers suffering from anxiety. However, for what it is, this is charming and well-intentioned.

I received a complimentary e-galley from the publisher; all opinions are my own.

It was interesting to note that if there were no sin in the world, there would be nothing to be worried about ! Model prayers are suggested, and it is emphasized that the Bible is the living Word and it is the main way God speaks to us!

Exercise, music and singing are shown to be ways to keep your mind engaged and Your spirit focused on the things of God.

An outline of the books of the Bible and a summarization of specific topics discussed in each book are given to help you focus on God's Word and not your anxiety.
