This series just reiterates so spectacularly how nonfiction does not have to be boring! The facts are fabulous! The premise so fun! Kids will love continuing to engage with this book. Special touches I appreciated: the share of the photo of Kari as a 4th grader and the fact table at the end of the book.

In this sequel, we get to play a guessing game. Is it a butt or a face? Look at the picture, take a guess, and turn the page to find out if you are right or wrong.
When you turn the page, you also learn a fact about the animal.
I think these books are such a fun idea. I like the facts about the animals in the book. I also like that they keep the facts short. While reading this book, we learned about some new animals.
My 7 year old said the book was amazing, great, and awesome.
My 9 year old said the book was fun and silly.
I'd recommend this book. I loved learning about new animals too.

5 ⭐️
Fun for the whole family.

My 9YO and I had a blast tossing out our guesses of face or butt to see who was right, and we really enjoyed the interesting information about the animals and the location mapping at the end. I definitely learned some things.

🐒 Great images, great facts, and cute puns. Definitely gift-worthy!

Thanks to NetGalley, Sourcebooks, and Kari Lavelle for providing me with a complimentary ARC to review!

Similarly phenomenal as the original. It's very much a 'volume 2' versus a sequel, because it's exactly the same but with different animals. Either volume would be an excellent read for an appropriately aged child (or reasonably easy to amuse adult, like myself!) but because I read volume 1 first, I would lean towards it a little more. I think there were more animals I wasn't familiar with in volume 1 as well. Great read, nicely educational, lots of fun for everyone.

This book is fantastic. I can't wait to get it into the hands of our patrons. It is full of animal facts but makes you laugh. This is a perfect book to sit down and read as a family.

Much like the first volume, Butt or Face? Volume 2 does not disappoint. Apparently I have the humor of a middle grade student, because even looking at the pictures makes me giggle.

Besides the fun game of guessing, facts about the animals add substance to the book. Volume 1 has been a hit with my patrons (who are 10-22) and I'm already anticipating buying this for my library. And possibly as gifts for friends.

I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. Not as good as volume one of Butt or Face, but still fun to guess Butt or Face?

Part guessing game, part nonfiction animal book, all fun! If you haven't yet had the pleasure of trying to identify whether you are looking at the front or back end of the animals in the original Butt or Face, then please do so. Even if you have already worked your way through those amazing animals and their difficult to figure out heads and heinies, there are plenty more animal mysteries in store. And if you know a youngster who was head over tails in love with the first book - you must get them the second one!

For all those doubters who said it couldn't be done, Kari Lavelle has put together a book full of even more intriguing animals and their amazing faces and fundaments. Each creature is shown first in a close-up that could be either its face or its butt. Readers must guess, then turn the page to see if they were correct. The answer page has a photo that shows a more wide-screen view of the animal along with text that tells the name of the animal and a few details about it. Sidebars labeled "Face the Facts" or "Beyond the Backside" offer even more information about the animal and its various body parts.

This book is perfect for young animal lovers, kiddos who enjoy guessing games, classes studying animals, or caregivers looking for a book to get a child interested in reading. Who could resist finding out that a giraffe's "patootie provides a perfect place for a power nap," or that there is such a creature as an alien butt spider? The author's note explains the inspiration behind these amazing books.

This book is due to hit the shelves April 2nd, so mark your calendars!

In a Nutshell: Quite similar to the first book BUTT with new animals and new butts and faces to sort out from. Great as a classroom resource.

When I had read “Butt or Face?”, I wish I had known that there was a second book in the offing. I used all my *booty*licious puns in that review, and have *bottom*ed out of *face*tious vocabulary. Kindly *ass*cuse the lack of *cheek*iness in the rest of this write-up.

The format is the same as in the first book. We have some tricky photos of some part of an animal’s anatomy, and the reader has to answer a simple question – is it a butt or a face?

As kids enjoy potty humour, I am sure they will have fun with their guesses. To add to the fun, ask kids if they can guess which animal, or even which species the depicted butt or face belongs to. That is much, much trickier!

The answer is provided on the next page, along with the complete photo of the creature. (I love books that present animal facts with actual pictures instead of using illustrations – it makes a huge difference.) This is accompanied by some interesting trivia about the animal, which comes under some *fanny*tastic headings. (Yay! One pun slipped in!)

I read this book along with my younger daughter, and we had a nice time competing over who could guess the most right answers. (It was a tie!) A couple of the animals were too familiar to both of us, but there were enough novel creatures to keep us both happy. Some of them are so weird-looking that I couldn’t figure out where the butt or face was even after seeing the whole image.

There is a little author’s note about what inspired this series. I can’t recollect if this was present in the first book as well, but I enjoyed reading it as it contained quite an interesting fact.

Finally, there’s a table, detailing the habitats and the eating preferences of the animals pictured in the book.

The only reason I am not going higher in my rating is that it offered exactly the same experience as the first book, which is great for consistency but also feels like too much of a good thing. There’s no pushing of the bar in terms of novelty. (Such a tough demand to make of an author, right?)

All in all, this is a fun and informative read that ought to work excellently in classrooms as a guessing game. The humour will appeal to the target age of 6-10 years. Younger ones can also have fun guessing the butt or face part, but the trivia might be too advanced for them in vocabulary.

4 stars.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Kids and NetGalley for the DRC of “Butt or Face? Revenge of the Butts”. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

This was such a cute read! I even got a few of them incorrect. The facts about the animals were interesting and taught me stuff.

The added bonus at the end of the where they lay their butts and what they put in their face was an added bonus of fun along with the map showing where all the animals are from.

Bonus points for having my favorite Axolotl in the book!

This was a really fun book to read with my four- and six-year-old! The potty humor game is strong in my house and this book was engaging in the extreme for my kids to guess if they were looking at a butt or a face. Highly recommend to anyone with little kids!

Hmmm.... I'm off to find more in this series. Butts are never not funny. Some people grow up and still think it's funny, and those parents will have an especially good time reading this book with their kids.
I was really impressed at how much information was packed into this little book, too. It's always good to learn science in a fun way.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

We love this now series! It has the littles and the big ones cracking up and trying to guess, at the same time as learning on every page. We cannot wait to see this one in print and are already hoping for a third one!

Thanks NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. This book had the whole family laughing out loud as we guessed face or butt (some are harder than you may think). Each photo is accompanied by facts about the animal.

Butts are always funny. My boys love the concept of these books. The educational content is great for adults and children. My husband and I got a good laugh out of our incorrect guesses.

Thanks to Net Galley and Sourcebooks Fire Kids for the ARC,

The first volume of Butt or Face? was easily one of our favorite reads of 2023. This continues the hilarity of the first volume, while encouraging curiosity and to explore the natural world. I wish this book included as many interesting or unknown animals as the first one. I was surprised when we saw a giraffe, for example, in this story. Still, we will definitely be including this on our purchase list!

The focus of this book is "Can you tell the butt or face?". I especially liked that it had pictures zoomed into a variety of animals, including peacock, caterpillars, and giraffes. It gives facts about each animal. the pictures are bright and colorful.

This engaging little science book for early readers is a gem. My thanks go to Net Galley and Sourcebooks Landmark for the review copy. This book will be available to the public April 2, 2024.

The title is the content in a nutshell. One page has a large, sometimes whole page photograph, but we don’t know what animal it belongs to, or what end we’re looking at. These are cleverly chosen and stumped me about half the time. When I set it down, my spouse picked it up, began leafing through it, and I heard him say, “What? You’re kidding!”

There is no real story here. You open the book, and you leap right in. Picture, then the solution, right down the line. Whereas I like a bit of scaffolding and accompanying narrative myself, I also know that there are children that will prefer this book exactly the way that it’s written. Children in early elementary school that are in the stage of development in which they find potty jokes gut-bustingly funny will absolutely adore it.

I was previously unfamiliar with Lavelle’s work, and hadn’t seen the first in the series, but after perusing this one, I knew my grandsons had to have it, and since this one won’t be out till spring, I bought the first volume of Butt or Face for the second grader’s Christmas gift. That’s a strong endorsement.

Note: my blog, Seattle Book Mama, will run this review on March 26, 2024, one week prior to publication.

Sometimes it takes a little spin to get a kid reading. Like the "What if you had animal eyes" series, the Butt or Face books encourage kids to use their imaginations while teaching them about unfamiliar animals. Anyone can enjoy the guessing, and the accompanying answers and animal facts are educational and interesting. The pictures of the animals are displayed in a compelling way, around colorful text and pull-outs.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I'll look into the first volume and purchase this one for my library.
