The original Legend of Sleepy Hollow is not a difficult read, even for children, but this version definitely makes the story a bit more friendly for kids. My niece and nephew were introduced to the story of Sleepy Hollow for the first time last year and got super into the story, so I was pleased to find this version and was so impressed I shared it with them to see how kids would like it - they loved it.

Junior comic book, featuring a decent but yet actually quite anaemic version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, followed by a completely jumbled lecture regarding White Lady ghosts (who don't, we are told, all have to wear white, which clearly helps a lot, thanks). Before you've got over the fascination with Mrs Madison haunting a White House bunch of foliage – as has been mentioned twice by now – you're into the final piece, which is a similar scattershot look at remnants of the Civil War. So this is USA-only as a book, but more importantly it's just not what was wanted. It comes across more as a listicle than fantastical, giving us a directory of hauntings rather than any direct route to being spooked. Even for such a young audience the bloodless nature of it will only disappoint – and two stars is generous.

This graphic novel was so cute. I love the artwork. I enjoy the stories through out the novel. This would be great for any child.

1.5/5

I agree with everyone previously saying that this was a let down.
This is supposed to be a kids lecture part of a series with different topics.
This book was dedicated to ghost stories.

The problem I had was that nothing in here was interesting.
The art didn't bother me too much, it wanted to resemble the US comics format, and even if it didn't succeeded every time, it was terrible either, just standard.

The stories on the other hand felt very flat and somehow you had to know them already otherwise there's nothing explained. It's just a sort of "guide" as others said, where basically you already know the main story and an external and present time modern narrator tells you what individuals see NOW.
But it ain't ghost story, just a sort of kinda confusing explanation.

What I axpected was the actual ghost story illustrated and narrated for a younger audience, not some personal parent version and retelling of it.

My son and I enjoyed reading the collection of ghost stories together! My 10-year-old son falls within the autism spectrum, and he struggles with remembering details. The illustrated stories were a big hit with him and had the bonus of helping him understand what was going on. Although it is a collection of ghost stories, I don't think the stories or illustrations are scary. They are very informational, and I think it would be fine for young readers within the lexile to read them. I loved that each story had an introduction with additional information and a main character list. I love that more similar ghost stories are provided at the end of each story. I also appreciated the glossary which we referenced to help my son expand his vocabulary. Overall, good read without being overly spooky which I think would make a great resource in the classroom during the Halloween season.

This reminds me of the books I would use when I taught students who were below grade level in reading. The art is ok, but there are so many tools that will help students who struggle with reading. I love the character photos and introductions. The recommendations in the back will be helpful to students who enjoyed one of the stories. It is a good short introduction to some classics. I think kids will enjoy this.

4 stars

This was pretty terrible tbh. The art was so bad, and why were the only POC characters the slaves in the Civil War stories?? And why were there so many civil war ghost stories, too?? There are literally millions of others that could've been chosen for kids to read that are so much more engaging and interesting

This wasn't something I would read or I will ever read again. I had the idea of this book consisting of some ghost origin stories as they are. Instead, it turned out to be a guide to ghost stories which you can show and educate if you will. So it has some parts of the original stories and present-day combined.

I really have nothing else to explain about this GN actually. I enjoyed it as what it was for but didn't like it much. I'm pretty sure I'm not in the demography which this book targeted.

A very fast read about a number of different ghost stories. It was interesting to see the stories behind the ghosts.

Short and engaging. Not too scary. Not disturbing. Yet gives a perfectly good insight into many classic scary tales. Quick read.
The drawings are bold, clear, and nice. The text is just the right amount to complement the drawings.
I’d say this book is perfect for younger middle-grade readers who want to read “something scary”.

I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own opinions.

I really do wish we had comics like this when I was younger. The mix of the visual and the written1 information make learning and retaining what I'm reading so much easier.

I enjoyed the little spooky mixed with a little history subjects of these comics. The glossary at the end is the cheery on top.

Short but engaging, not over the top spooky ghost stories in a graphic novel. Sure to be a hit with kids.

I really enjoyed this story – it was quite a short read but as I was reading this book on the run up to Halloween it was perfect timing.

I thought that the story was well written and it was really enjoyable too, I have a great interest in the paranormal so books like this one will always be a hit with me and I loved the mix of stories that were told. The illustrations were also really good and helped bring the stories to life.

It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended!

This is a very uninspired book with bland art. I suppose it has its place as an alternative to some iconic and classic ghost stories. But there are much better alternatives out there— definite miss.

I’m not sure what age range this book is for. It says Jr. so I was looking forward to reading it with my daughter. The language is very young, but the stories were a little too scary for her. The writing and the topic didn’t seem to match.

Thank you to NetGalley for proving me an eArc in exchange for an honest review

A compilation of several well-known ghost stories: the source and rumors of the stories are explained and the tale itself is told in a short version. Nice drawings and colours. A perfect read and gift for fans of the spooky season.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I have to be honest, this was the worst graphic novel I've ever read. The illustrations were ugly and the stories were dull. All in all. it was really lacking in creativity.

I think the idea of promoting classics to kids is a fantastic idea. I think the idea of mini comics or graphic novels is even better, as their shorter attention spans can be drawn back in with pictures.

However the ARC that transferred to my kindle was practically incomprehensible. I know this may not be indicative of the finished product, but I found it actually confusing it was so broken up. For this reason, I have decided not to rate it for the time being, but I’d be interested in seeing the finished product.

Artwork hurts to look at and the stories themselves are done terribly. I understand this is intended for children but that doesn't mean we can just allow this rushed garbage to be released even under the guise of being something for kids.
