How can things be divided and what is a remainder? or is it Remain Deer? How can maths be fun?
There is a complete page about prime numbers and remainders, and another about feeling left out.
The illustrations by Marie Hermansson are fun, brilliantly colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school/classroom or your local public library!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from SOURCEBOOKS Kids | Sourcebooks Explore via NetGalley. Thank you

This book shows it's possible to include math in a story and have it be fun. What a fun way to learn about math. This story was absolutely delightful and the illustrations charming. The ending of the book is great because it tells what remainders and prime numbers are as well as what to do when someone is left out. Great Book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.

This is a fun math concept book. A new reindeer joins the school and it’s put their number at 13 so when the groups are told to pair there is always a remain-deer. The book rhymes well and gets it’s lesson across. Kids will understand it and the play on words of remainder and remain – DEER. All in all, this was a fabulous math book that got the concept of prime numbers across in an excellent understandable way.

The dozen reindeer have been together in school for a long time. Then, on the day of the big Showcase, a new student arrives. They spend the time in different classes trying to figure out why their groups always have a remaindeer now. When they finally get to math class, their teacher introduces them to prime numbers and how they work. The group figures out how to revamp their projects and include everyone in one large 13-member group. I appreciate how Howes incorporates math information in the story. Readers will enjoy the fun and learn more about math. I also like the way these students work to include everyone after leaving the new student out for much of the day. The author includes informative text on math and on how we can avoid leaving others out at the end of the book.

I can’t wait to tell our math interventionist about this book. It’ll be a perfect book for her to use to introduce the concept of prime numbers. The story is cute and is great for SEL and not just math. It has a lesson about not leaving people out and what being alone feels like as well.

The Reindeer Remainders by: Katey Howes

Math in literacy is a very effective way to engage kids in math without the anxiety some students feel in math class or with math homework. This picture book is a perfect example of this as because it is full of beautiful illustrations and authentic reasons that require division. Prime numbers are also addressed in the context of the reindeer problems. I think it is a perfect way to introduce and practice the concept of division in a classroom or at home as it can be a difficult concept for students to understand and conceptualize.

I would definitely use this picture book in my math classroom to investigate division and prime numbers in an authentic context. The illustrations will help children to visualize the problems and allow them to 1:1 match and see different ways to represent their thinking when trying it on their own. I would recommend this book for kids in grade 3-5 who are investigating division, fair shares, remainders and prime numbers. It would be the perfect addition to classroom libraries, school/public libraries, and a student's personal library.

Thank you Net Galley, Katey Howes and Sourcebooks for the opportunity to review this advanced copy. All of my opinions are mine alone

Such a fun story to teach kids about prime numbers and remainders! The concept of remainders in math also applies to a new reindeer student who is left out of the groups until the reindeer can solve the problem. I loved the charming woodland illustrations. I appreciate the guide on how to address students feeling left out as well as a summary of prime numbers and remainders at the end of the book.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebook Kids for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

This is the most adorable introduction remainders I've ever seen. With a cute story about 13 reindeer trying to work in even groups, this book gently covers division and remainders. But it also is a great discussion starter about feeling left out. I love the backmatter which goes into more depth about the math aspect as well as the SEL aspect of the story.

The Reindeer Remainders by Katey Howes. This book using 13 reindeers allows for fixing groups so no one is left out. Feelings about not being included is brought out in this book by using math to do so. We need to teach our children how to have compassion and kindness towards our friends and classmates.

➗I’ve got a cute STEM book for you today!!

➗The reindeer school has always had 12 students, which is a nice even number and makes splitting up into even groups very simple – 2 groups of 6, 3 groups of 4, 4 groups of 3, or 6 groups of 2. Lots of options, right? But now they have a new student, which brings their total to 13 and they can’t create groups with the same number of reindeer anymore. No matter what they do, there is always one left out.

➗The commonsense thing to do would be to add the remaining reindeer to one of the groups, right? But this is a math story, so instead, you will learn about division, remainders, and what a prime number is! A prime number is only divisible by 1 or itself. So, the reindeer learn there is only one combo that includes all reindeer and that is a single group of 13.

➗The back matter includes some extra info about how it can feel to be left out of a group, including tools to manage those feelings. I wasn’t expecting that, and I appreciate that it was included.

➗The illustrations in the book are wonderful.

➗This book would be great for primary classrooms and home libraries.

Thank you @netgalley and @Sourcebookskids for an eARC of this book, which I have read and reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is an extremely clever, adorable, and fun-to-read picture book about--math! I confess I had forgotten what prime numbers were, and boy, did this book make it crystal clear! The forest school setting, with reindeer as the students and various woodland creatures (rabbit, bobcat, owl) as the teachers, is charming, and the rhyme is delightful. Unlike other books in this genre, this one features excellent back matter that delves into both the math issue and the social-emotional one (being left out, like a remainder, makes one feel bad; how can you address these feelings?). A must-have for the classroom!

Math can seem complicated and overwhelming to readers (of any age!) and having a picture book like this, that explains the concepts of remainders and prime numbers in a fun, accessible way, is invaluable. The story itself, about working together to make sure everyone in a group is included, is a joy to read with energetic rhyme and lively, colorful illustrations!

This math story really is full of heart! It tells the story of a reindeer classroom where the students are unable to divide into equal groups without leaving someone out - a compelling way to make prime numbers and remainders memorable for kids, but also convey the feelings associated with being left out of a group, and ways to show empathy. The rhyming text is fun to read aloud. Marie Hermansson's lovely illustrations add playfulness and emotion and help to visualize the math concepts. And the back matter--about remainders, primes, plus what to try if you or someone else is left out--is all clearly and compassionately conveyed, with actionable tips. I highly recommend this book, both for classrooms and for home!

This was a fun educational book for kids. The graphics are terrific, and I love how it explained some math equations to children. It did get a little confusing for my child (8y) at the end, but it was probably because he was not in the mood to learn math. I feel like this book would help children who struggle with these math concepts a lot!

I received a digital advanced reader copy of this book via Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is such a cute mathematical read! I normally don’t like math but if all math classes were like this, I’d enjoy it more! A class of 12 reindeer start their day just like any other but a new student comes to join them, making their grand total of 13 reindeer! But what happens when they attempt to divide up evenly into groups? Groups of 2? Groups of 3? Of 4? There’s always one REMAIN-DEER (pun, get it? Haha).

The book helps teach students about remainders and prime numbers such as 13. I love how it used illustrations to help further explain the division as there are some learners (like me) who prefer to see it visually. It helps it click!

The illustrations were great! Beautifully drawn and colorful. Overall, I definitely enjoyed this book and would read again, especially when my daughter or my nieces and nephew starts learning about prime numbers. Perfect for the classroom!

Kids are sure to enjoy this delightful rhyming story about prime numbers and remain-deers! I love how this book - and the wonderful math teacher, Mrs. Lynx - invites readers (and reindeer) to solve the puzzle at the center of the book themselves. Why, the book asks, is 13 a number that can't be broken into groups? Except for groups of 1 or a group of 13? A fabulous introduction to the concept of grouping, with themes of inclusion as well! This fun and educational book will get kids thinking about math - and about forming groups everyone can join. Highly recommend!
