I different book about art. Interesting to see what the artists were looking at when they created their pictures.

A beautiful book for young readers, illustrated in the artist's uniquely profound and boldly colorful style. It chronicles Frida's early upbringing, the crippling accident that rendered her bedridden and how she used art as her creative outlet and coping mechanism during her short life.

What an amazing story with the most vibrant illustrations I have ever seen. I have seen pictures of Frida Kahlo on various items, but I did not know her story. I'm glad the darker periods in her life weren't glossed over as happens in other children's books.

The added art project ideas for the reader to do is a fun added bonus.

This book really touched my heart. I had no idea that such beautiful artwork was born in such pain. What a lovely testament to art and painting and its healing effect on the human heart. This book was well written and the illustrations were so pretty and colorful and helped draw you into the world of Frida, as she must have seen it. I would recommend this book to families who are interested in learning about art and not afraid to talk about difficult topics with their kids. Even as an adult, it took a few sittings to read in it’s entirety, for a picture book it’s fairly meaty and the subject matter is emotionally weighty. So give yourself some space to digest the material, but it is well worth the journey.
Thank you for the eARC, I learned a lot through this book.

I always count on DK's The Met series to have beautiful illustrations, and a solid historical look at the subject. The Met: Frida Kahlo was no exception. This was a lovely history of her childhood, marriage, and art. The illustrations mimicked her style, and color was included throughout. It gives readers a look at who Frida was as a person, and what inspired her art.

I highly recommend this for all libraries, and will be ordering a copy for our youth department collection.

This is the life story of one world class artist who overcame many difficulties in her life by expressing her talents in brilliantly colorful paintings. She was first confined by the damages of polio, then by being broken in a bus accident, later by illness, and still later by complications of previous injuries. She painted wonderfully and had many things to say about her ability to overcome adversity.
"I am not sick, I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint."
"At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can."
BECOME A WORK OF ART!
"There is nothing more precious than laughter-it is strength to laugh and lose oneself, to be light." Throughout the book there are the illustrations by Natalia Rojas Castro which are delightful, imaginative, clear, and with the brilliant colors the artist herself preferred.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or teacher or your public library! An excellent book!
I requested and received a free temporary e-book on Adobe Digital Editions from DK/DK Children via NetGalley. Thank you! And thanks to the MET!

A very thorough biography of Kahlo's life, especially for a children's book. I appreciated the depth provided, as often biographies aimed at young readers drastically oversimplify someone's life. The artwork was stunning, and I liked that the author included artistic prompts and conversation starters in appropriate moments, bridging the gap between consumer/appreciator of art and creator.

The colors and stories from this Frida Kahlo biography for kids. I just wish in the age of DEI initiatives and the notion of 'mirrors and windows' in children's literature, I wonder if it was considered to have a Mexican author and/ or illustrator.

I really liked this book. It adds more information than some biographies I've read about Frida. It talks a lot about her disability, but we never see her with an ambulatory aid. It's important that we not only get written descriptions of disability, but also visual representations.

I liked the activity suggestions both throughout the book and also in the back matter.

Frida Kahlo is a fascinating character and artist and this wonderful book tells her story so well. It is beautifully illustrated and is full of detail and stories about Frida.
As well as the story and pictures I thought the addition of questions and activities for the young reader were a brilliant idea.
I will definitely be recommending this to our children’s librarian and I look forward to seeing it being read by many kids and parents alike.

This biography series for children (7-9 years) brings an amazing character of Frida Kahlo whose colorful surroundings and supportive parents influenced her to become an original artist.

Her story begins in childhood. Her grandfather was a painter, and her father, who came from Germany, was a photographer. He showed her how to take pictures and taught her appreciation for nature. Their blue house, La Casa Azul, was surrounded by lots of flowers, attracting colorful butterflies, birds, and other animals. Her father believed that, like boys, a girl should have an education, which she pursued.

To help her parents with money, she got a job as an assistant to a printmaker. This position gave her opportunity to learn how to draw by copying the work of famous artists. In her final year of school, she got into a horrible accident. She suffered many fractures and broken bones. She had to stay in bed for months where she grew restless. Her mother came up with very creative ideas for Frida to paint. And this is when her creative soul blossomed. As soon as she was able to walk, she went to Diego Rivera to have a look at her paintings. At her school, Diego Rivera, a prominent Mexican painter, was hired to create a mural. He was dazzled by her artistry.

Her story continues with her marriage and how she developed her authentic style.

Frida’s story is engrossingly presented. It exposes her whole life, with enough details to give dimensions, but not to overwhelm. There are some words which might be hard for children to pronounce, and the meaning might have to be explained.

Overall, wonderful storytelling and eye-catching illustrations that pop-out of the pages and enforce the true spirit of the artist Frida was.
