It's Halloween in Black Rock Falls so what could possibly go wrong!?
Brilliantly written, you can feel the dampness of the fog and the fear of the victims.
Although we are on our 21st visit here with Jenna and co., who by now feel like old friends, the plot is as fresh as always.

Black Rock Falls: spooky and deadly as ever!😳

A riveting Halloween story for the winter holidays? Why not? This was a total change from the typical seasonal fare in December and around New Year and I just ate it up! The author is especially good at building a picture of dark corners, misty streets and scary Halloween displays as a backdrop to the action.

D.K. Hood really kept the suspense and tension high as some fairly recent burial sites in the nearby woods seem eerily linked to the violent attack and disappearance of a local young woman in late October. Fearing more victims to follow, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner in law enforcement and life Dave Kane lead the effort to find a Halloween serial killer. And although they don't know it, his selection of this year's victims cuts close to home.

Scary, taut drama with a short but good list of suspects and some missteps by two detectives who should know better. I just wondered that Jenna was so reserved in her criticism of their actions🤔.

Recommended.

Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘A Song For The Dead’, book 21 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

It’s Halloween and the towns folk of Black Rock Falls have decorated the stores to look spooky. Freya Richardson is reported missing with her bathroom awash with blood and as Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are out searching they discover abandoned graves in the forest with the bodies of women buried in groups of three. It looks like the Halloween Slasher is back in ‘serial killer central’ hunting his latest victims. With the added expertise of Special Agent Jo Wells, Ty Carter and computer wizard Kalo, they pool resources to catch the latest perpetrator.

‘A Song For The Dead’ is another addictive thriller in this brilliant series that has an intricate and chilling storyline as the unidentified Halloween Slasher stalks his victims and kills them in a heart-stopping and thoroughly gruesome manner. The action-packed plot is perfectly conceived with suspense, drama and twists and turns. The tension increases the further I’ve got into the story so it’s near impossible to stop reading until I know who the killer is. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading this latest instalment in Black Rock Falls and can’t wait to get my hands on book 22.

Another brilliant book in the Kane & Alton series. It may be book 21 but every book is just as amazing as the last book. A real roller coaster of a creepy storyline that keeps the reader guessing right till the end. The relationship between Jenna, Dave & the team is a joy to read about and you really feel yourself rooting for them. I can’t wait for book 22. If you haven’t read this series or author you need to as your’e missing a real treat. One of my favourite authors.

Halloween in Black Rock Falls, what could go wrong...? Yes, everything. A mysterious serial killer has killed before, then disappeared, only to kill again. He kills three women. It is Halloween again and he needs to kill. But who is he, who is he planning on killing, and can they stop him?

Kane and Alton are living their new lives as parents which adds some new twists to their lives, but what does not change are the amount of serial killers in and around town. As gritty, bloody, and brutal as ever, yet somehow poetic and mysterious, which can only be understood by reading the book. A great read by a fantastic author!

This is book #21 of the Kane and Alton series. Whilst it is part of a series it can be read as a standalone book. We are back in serial killer central at the spookiest time of the year. A young woman has gone missing and Sheriff Jenna and Deputy Dave are on the case. They are also looking into the discovery of old graves in the forest and it looks like everything may be linked!

Black Rock Falls is a creepy place to live, even more so at Halloween. The book sends shivers down your spine with all the normal spooky goings on of the dressed up shops and costumed townsfolk, but add in another serial killer and the creepiness is turned up a notch. The story begins quickly with the disappearance of Freya Richardson and the following investigation into it. The chapters are interspersed with the killer's perspective, but you are kept wondering throughout who the killer could be. We get to see all of our favourite characters back for this investigation with Rio and Rowley involved, along with FBI Agents Jo Wells and Ty Carter.

The storyline twists and turns with more murders and we follow Kane and Alton around the town following up leads to try and save the next victim before it's too late. It's a gripping, atmospheric read with lots of scares and frights, alongside some gruesome murders. Full of twists and turns, this will definitely put you off having a shower! Would recommend!

Halloween always gives Sheriff Jenna Alton the creeps - and especially this year with all the decorations over town, she's really on alert. She and her husband, Deputy Dave Kane, are supporting a dig in the woods when a woman's body is found - wrapped in bedding and with a cell phone. It gets stranger, the more they uncover at the dig. In addition, complicating their case, a woman in town is brutally murdered after taking a shower. With one of the best supporting casts, Jenna and Dave work to determine if these cases are linked and find the killer. They are also balancing their jobs with becoming parents to a very special young boy, Tauri... and the author finds wonderful ways to weave him in to the story. Thank you to Bookouture for an advanced reader of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.

A Song for the Dead by D.K. Hood is the latest installment to the Alton/Kane series. The setting takes place in Black rock falls around the eerie Halloween backdrop of misty roads and spooky decorations. The team must call upon their FBI friends to assist with stopping of a murderer that is killing in 3s and women are disappearing from their town.
This story is a suspenseful, twisty mystery that leaves you clenching all of your muscles and needing to remind yourself to relax and breathe. There are many twists and leaves you not quite sure who the suspect really should be.
It is a fast paced, gripping novel and series that i highly recommend to any thriller/mystery reader.
Thank you to D.K Hood, the publisher as well as NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Well written book with fantastic and very interesting characters. The plot is good, but the story is hampered by the inserted chapters written from 1.person POV, which is strange and unnecessary.

“A Song for the Dead" by D.K. Hood is a gripping addition to the Detectives Kane and Alton series, delivering a suspenseful tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The author skillfully weaves a complex web of mystery, blending tension and intrigue throughout. The Halloween backdrop adds an extra layer of spookiness to the narrative, enhancing the overall atmosphere.

Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are well-developed characters with a dynamic partnership, making them engaging protagonists. The plot unfolds with unexpected twists and turns, keeping readers guessing until the very end. Hood masterfully builds suspense, creating a palpable sense of urgency as the detectives race against time to solve the case.
The writing is evocative, painting vivid imagery of the eerie small town of Black Rock Falls. The interconnectedness of past and present crimes adds depth to the storyline. Although the 21st installment in the series, the book stands alone well, making it accessible to new readers.
While the pacing is generally excellent, some sections felt a bit rushed, hindering the full exploration of certain character dynamics. Overall, "A Song for the Dead" is a solid four-star read for fans of thrilling crime fiction, combining mystery, suspense, and well-crafted characters.

Thanks to Ms Hood, the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sheriff Jenna Kane and her husband, Deputy Dave Kane are investigating the disappearance of a woman. There is so much blood in her shower and bathroom, that she has to be dead, but the case is ruled as a missing person until the body can be found.
Graves are found in a forest, and Jenna is certain that a serial killer is in town.

I am glad that I live in a country that does not celebrate Halloween! The creepiness of people stalking you in costumes and masks would freak me out.
This novel is very creepy, and the murders are sadistic.
I was kept guessing until the end as to who the serial killer was.
If you want to be creeped out and frightened of having a shower alone in your house at night, you will love this book!

4/5 stars. I recommend

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book

Another great read in the Kane and Alton series, book 21 and still as fresh as ever. I don't know how the author does it but it's full of twists and suspense right to the end. Black Rock Falls is definitely the serial killer capital of the US! I wouldn't like to live there, especially around Halloween, I loved the costume and decoration descriptions, the team dynamics and the return of Jo to assist with the case. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

“I just had a call from a young woman, Clara Finch, she lives in an apartment on Elm. Her friend, Freya Richardson, has been missing all weekend and she’s worried about her. She asked the landlord to open the door to see if her friend was okay and says the bathroom is covered in blood. No sign of her friend.”
And so it begins.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "A Song For The Dead", the 21st book in DK Hood's "Detectives Kane and Alton" series.
It's Halloween in Black Rock Falls, so naturally Jenna and Dave, Shane Wolfe and their teams have another serial killer in their midst.
With the discovery of recent remains in three graves, previously thought to be historical, the hunt is on; especially considering that a young local woman is now missing and presumed dead, judging by the state of the crime scene at her residence.
A killer like no other they've ever hunted is hard at work this Halloween, and he's set his sights on some of the most vulnerable of Black Rock Falls citizens - single women whose every habit he's studied and whose homes he's violated. But it seems that not everyone in law enforcement believes the reports of strange goings on at the women's homes - possibly to their detriment.
As suspects are identified and the investigations shift into high gear, will Dave and Jenna be in time to save the next target?
DK Hood does not disappoint in Book 21 - the suspense is still just as high as ever and Serial Killer Central does not let us down.
While this book can be read as a standalone thriller, it's highly recommended that you read the series to get the full impact and character back stories. Looking forward to Book 22 and beyond.

I honestly don't know why anyone lives in Black Rock Falls, which has a murder rate of some countries. That said Jenna Kane and Dave Alton are dogged law enforcement officers who always work out the identity of the villain- in this case a villain who is choosing victims who look like Jenna. They're also busy working on being parents to Tauri, which is causing a small amount of friction between them due to their different styles. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I've only read one of the preceding books but that wasn't a problem. It's a twisty page turner.
