Book #9 in the excellent Lewis Cole series. Each book can be read as a stand alone and thoroughly enjoyed, but if you love character driven thrillers, you'll love each and every one of these books. Brendan DuBois has developed the Lewis Cole character into someone you'd want to be on your side when you need help. Cole is surrounded by a team of characters that has grown into a family that takes care of their own. Each character has their own strengths that will contribute to the actions and pace as the story grows. Their sense of loyality and "no questions asked" when Cole needs help remind me of the Jonathan Grave series.

In BLOOD FOAM, Cole is faced with problems on several fronts, which is his normal. His home is damaged and his insurance is taking their time paying out. Plus, a hurricane is predicted in the near future. When a friend contacts him for help in finding her missing fiance, he'll stick his neck out to find him. The questions he asks lead to more questions instead of answers. With the help of his team of friends, readers will find themselves in the middle of another Brendan DuBois thriller. DuBois has a permanent home on my TBR list and every new title is an auto read for me. 5 easy stars.

At what point does doing the right thing for a friend cost too much?

Lewis Cole, fired magazine writer and former DOD analyst, is not in a good place at the moment. Having survived his last endeavor (seeking justice for the severe injuries inflicted on his good friend and Tyler Beach, NH, police detective Diane), he is now living in his car while he does battle with his insurance company. During the aforementioned exploits, his house was badly damaged and car destroyed by an intentionally set fire, and paying out on his claim does not seem to be a huge priority for the insurers. Being currently unemployed, he needs to be careful with his funds. He is also concerned about news that a tropical storm may be moving up the coast from Florida, and if it does his damaged house may be a complete write off given its current vulnerable state, but without his insurance payout he can’t do anything about it. But his life is about to get even more complicated. His newly engaged former girlfriend Paula comes to him for help when her fiancé Mark disappears. He has been missing for three days; no one has seen him at his place of work or his home, and Paula has not been able to reach him. Lewis has never really liked Mark all that much, but Paula is important to him and he agrees to do what the police won’t and co-workers don’t seem to care enough to do, namely track him down. Lewis is actually afraid that Mark will turn up dead, the victim of an accident, but instead finds something in Mark’s scant belongings that opens up a whole new line of inquiry. Soon Lewis will need the help of his friend and well-connected “security consultant” Felix to help him search for the missing man, keep Paula safe from the attentions of an out-of-stake biker gang leader, and ultimately stay alive.
When a person has no family left, they generally create one with the friends they chose, and Lewis Cole has done just that. He is also the sort of person who will put himself on the line to provide help to anyone in his “family” who needs it, and luckily his friends reciprocate. Even though he can’t quite understand what Paula sees in the seemingly boring if stable Mark, Lewis will search for the other man to the best of his ability. Turns out that Mark may not be quite as boring as he seemed, and may also not be worth the price that Lewis will have to pay to honor his promise to Paula. Making his way through small Italian restaurants, biker bars, no-tell motels and more than a couple of close calls with the Grim Reaper, Lewis digs for the truth of what happened to Mark in Blood Foam, the ninth book in the Lewis Cole series. Fans of Robert Parker, Philip R. Craig and M. K. Wren will likely enjoy this series (this entry, originally published in 2015, can easily be read as a stand-alone for those who have not yet read the other books), as will those who like their fiction set on the New England seacoast. Many thanks to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for allowing me an early copy of this solid mystery.

How exciting to have another Lewis Cole book to read! I thoroughly enjoy the fast-pace, intense actions and unorthodox ways he uses to solve mysteries. This story is part of an ongoing series but is easy to read as a standalone. You’ll enjoy these so much that you want to read the others.

Thanks to NetGalley and Severn River Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.
