Don’t let the title trick you. This is more of a supernatural noir detective story than a horror one. I found Mike Lucifer to be intriguing and humorous as the book progressed but I wanted more. Kind of hoping for this to become a series so I can learn more about the characters and their world.

This was fine but in terms of a noir urban fantasy with notes of Dresden Files, just didn't land as well as I would have liked. It does play to the tropes of its subgenre very well, but I personally didn't feel it really pushed anything beyond them to give the audience a glint of something new. (I think this is partly why it appears to have annoyed Dresden Files fans so much - that, and that for all that the Dresden Files are deeply flawed, they are better at eliciting an emotional response which makes you invest in the MC and the story). So overall, entertaining but missing something. Probably just the thing you're looking for if you're after Rivers of London lite.

Great Noir mixed with the supernatural elements. Definitely gives off Dresden vibes but with enough unique world building to set it apart. Recommended.

All Souls Lost was a great read by Dan Moren. Mike Lucifer is a Spiritual Consultant. He’s back in town to take care of business, but that means that things must be bad. He spent two years running away from his past. A young woman shows up at his office asking for help since her boyfriend has been possessed by a demon. He finds out that her boyfriend isn’t possessed but he is dead. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.

I really enjoyed this book. Mystery and magic—perfect for me! Others are marking it down because they’re comparing it to other books—not fair, really. And not an issue for me as I haven’t read any of the mentioned books. I love books set in my home state, so this was perfect.

It was just the right amount of funny, too.

I’m only taking off one star because the narrator took me out of the story with some mispronounced words (li-Barry), and the weird accent for Whisper. Not everyone can pull off accents. Just don’t do them if they’re not going to sound like anything real.

Otherwise, I’m hoping from the ending that more is to come!

This was a decent murder mystery with supernatural elements. However, at times I felt like I was missing information about Mike Lucifer and the whole he inhabits. I thought I had missed a book in a series at many points and I wish there would have been a bit more explanation of the supernatural in this book. I enjoyed that Mike was somewhat of a reluctant hero in this book.

Sadly had to DNF this one. not a fan of the narration... possibly would have had a better experience if I was reading instead of listening.

Great book, love the mixture of sci-fi and mystery with the down right usual all mixed into one. Great character development and world building. Looking forward to see what the next book will bring and what super natural situations they will find themselves in.

I was really let down by All Souls Lost. It started out promising and went downhill fast. This is perfect for people who would love The Dresden Files, but who haven't actually read The Dresden Files (if that makes sense). Basically, it hits all of the same notes, but to a much less satisfying degree. If you haven't read Dresden but think it sounds interesting, read this (or just read Dresden because it's much better). If you loved Dresden, you will be disappointed.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was pretty good. I started out really into this book but found myself stopping it and moving on to others. It wasn’t bad by any means, just didn’t hold my focus and keep me interested like I hoped. I would probably read the next one in the series.

All Souls Lost sounded like something I was going to love. Sadly I did not love it but I did really like it. The story follows Mike Lucifer who is a spiritual consultant. He takes a case that starts with a possible possession but ends up with a dead body.

I liked Lucifer as a character and his investigation skills, but everything seemed very cliche and unoriginal. Even though this book deals with paranormal themes everything seemed to happen exactly as you expect any mystery or detective story to play out. That’s what stopped me from loving this story.

As Lucifer digs deeper into the investigation he discovers more of what you expect. The person who comes to him knows more than they originally said and big corporations are evil. This book could have easily been something great if it brought more original ideas.

I may have sounded a little harsh on this book but I want to be clear, I really enjoyed it. The main character was a well-developed great lead. I just left this one wanting a little more.

I loved the noir theme of this book. A recently retired private detective who specializes in the supernatural only to come back home to be swept into a new case is right up my alley. Lucifer is a great main character and narrator for the book. You can hear his personality in his words and how he tells the story. The mystery is gripping from start to finish.

Mike Lucifer (coincidence – I think not – but I will turn each page thinking a conspiracy is afoot or something is about to happen or is this a clue) is an investigator/spiritual consultant. Money is an issue. He is broke and lost without his business partner. BUT.. a visit and check from Jenna Sparks needing help with her ‘demon possessed’ boyfriend keeps Mike in town. A detective with a supernatural twist, add in some humor – you have winner.
I rarely get to anything supernatural, but I loved it. My gut is telling me there will be more – possibly a series. I passed this along to my hubby who loves this genre and he is currently listening and has warned everyone NOT to interrupt him!

Mysterious, and yet a little on the comical side I thought. A washed out PI Lucifer is only in it for one more gig to get the money for him to take off again into the sun set to run away from getting his partner killed. Little does he know that along with this new case he will be gaining a new and impressive side kick Sparks. At the peak of the action it was very hard not to listen to the book. The narrators voice was easy to listen to and keep you engaged with his tones and voices.

This is my first Dan Moren novel to listen to or read but will definitely not be my last! Especially if the same narrator is reading. I loved the supernatural sleuth feeling of this audio book but to be honest was really did it for me was the narrator. Narrated by Mirron Willis, I couldn’t have hand picked a better narrator for a book with a supernatural spin. His telling is just creepy enough. Looking forward to this dynamic duo again.

Things turn into a hard case not only when the two visit Peters apartment and find him dead but the Police label it a suicide.

Wards/enchantments, Spirits, charms.. A fast paced paranormal mystery plot.

This started off really good and then I found it hard to follow for a few reasons.
The story is written in first person and I felt like the character could have been built up more. Because hes the main character and there's not much about him you know as a reader I really lost interest in what what happening. I also felt that throughout the plot there is a lot of telling me hes magic but no actual description to show me the magic. We are told there is a friend developing between Jenna and Mike here and there but again no evidence to really support this, no connection outside of this case work. In fact, Not much else happens in their personal loves; do they eat? sleep? do lunch? anything?
I found even in the way they address each other a little off. All throughout the book its in first name bases like 8 year old best buddies out playing together and not the adult professional manner you would come to expect from a business relationship. So it read very YA to me when these characters are actually made out to be adults. I personally found the plot to be constantly high paced throughout the chapters, so when a high impact moment was actually happening, there was no actual buildup pace to take me there. Very check point descriptive tasks following the next. Overall great story, just not my cup of tea. Would have loved to have gotten to know the characters and felt more of the mysterious paranormal theme.

I wanted to love this book.... BUT I just liked it. I found myself drifting and not paying attention at time. HOWEVER, if there is a part two (there will be) I will give that a try.

All Souls Lost was fun. It reminded me of detective noirs of yesteryear, but with a supernatural twist. Frankly, it was like reading an episode of Supernatural, and I’m all here for that. I liked getting to know the main character, Mike Lucifer: Spiritual Consultant, and all of his shadows. The ending of this leaves the door open for more books featuring this supernatural detective of sorts , and I am really eager for that, because the writing and the humor were right up my alley.

Mike Lucifer is a Spiritual Consultant who has had trauma in the past that keeps him from moving on, but an insistent stranger drags him into a case, which forces him to confront his mistakes in order to solve the mystery.

So this book is definitely a riff on Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files and Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The idea of a secret world existing alongside our own is a great way to explore the world’s oddities and strangeness in a humorous, and sometimes horrifying, way. Lucifer is an interesting character and the story’s ending leaves the possibility of a series, which I would probably read. The story started slow, but picked up nicely and had a relatively satisfying ending. I’m interested to see where Mike goes after this!
