After living in Maine for 10 years, many years ago, Its a setting I love and its perfect for a thriller and for this particular thriller Doiron's character Mike Bowditch is at it again with interesting characters, murder at every turn, and a mysterious father and daughter, possibly on the run? A dark and fast paced, edge of your seat story. You don't want to stop because you want to know what happens next. I love that this series can be stand alone, as I've read a few, our of order and enjoyed them all.

Another great installment of the Mike Bowditch series by author Paul Doiron. I think this may be the best of the series so far and it was interesting from the start. Mike goes in search of a missing person but ends up trying to question a father and daughter that don't want to be found. This leads to 24 hours of intense cat and mouse game that does not end well for some. Mike has to brave the elements with not a lot of gear while the weather conditions are treacherous at best. Some parts were a little outlandish, but what I like the most is how personable Mike is and believable. I feel like he portrayed what a lot of people would be thinking when faced with certain situations. The ending was a crazy twist that I did figure out but was still shocked. I would add this book to your TBR list and get it as soon as it hits the shelves!

Long time protagonist Mike Bowditch returns. This time he is tasked with receiving a phone call about a missing man that is way out there close to the Canadian border. Mike has to helicopter in with a well known pilot and his father in law. Experienced woodsmen and on the run desperate men. Great novel. Doiron keeps churning the outdoor adventure novel out.

Doiron 's books usually end with Game Warden Mike Bowditch in a dangerous battle. In Pitch Dark, it starts early and continues through all of the book. Bowditch is searching for a man and his young daughter. After acquiring a partner in the search and several murders, Doiron ends the book with an interesting twist I didn't see coming.

One of Doiron’s best, Pitch Dark is #15 in the series featuring Maine Game Warden Mike Bowditch and I’ve read them all. Several things about this series grabbed my interest from the start – a mystery set in the Maine woods with a main character that doesn’t always follow the playbook. Bowditch grew and matured over the course of the series and, as he continued to hone his skills, his character developed into one of my favorite investigators. There have been a few ups and downs in my ratings but Doiron just keeps getting better and better and finally – five stars!

The writing is chock full of careful, detailed descriptions of both wildlife and tools of the trade. The plots are fresh and closely tied to the setting and the role of game wardens and the protection of wildlife. In addition to the main character, there is an interesting cast of supporting characters who all play an integral role at recurring points over the length of the series.

Although I've been a fan of the series since the beginning, I think Warden Bowditch comes into his own in this latest episode. It is twisty but believable at a pace that was at times descriptive and reflective with intense action in others. Finally, it kicked into a high gear page-turner that kept me racing to the end. Of course, the final page has me anxiously waiting for #16...

Thanks to Netgalley and Minotaur Books for this ARC. I always enjoy a novel about a thrilling chase so this book caught my eye. I had not read previous books that featured the game warden investigator Mike Bowditch, but I liked him immediately! I really enjoyed the premise of the book, hunting down a killer, and Paul Doiron does a great job in describing the varied terrain in Maine and Canada. I think the multiple twists and turns in the book will provide you with some great reading. I'm intrigued enough to explore some of Dorion's other books in the series that features Mike Bowditch.

Nice to have the Maine game warden back. His search for a missing person morphs into a search for a bad guy and again into a chase for fugitives. But there is so much more that can’t be shared without giving away the twists and turns that include murder and betrayals.

Let me tell you, Doiron does it again! Fans of the Warden Mike Bowditch series won't be disappointed with this one. We're back in the heart of the Maine woods, this time facing a chilling mystery and a whole lot of danger.

Newcomer Mark Redmond and his young daughter raise red flags for Bowditch. He decides to investigate, but a shocking murder throws everything into chaos. Now, Bowditch finds himself alone and unarmed in the wilderness, playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with a cunning fugitive.

The suspense is killer (pun intended!), and Doiron's writing makes you feel like you're right there with Bowditch. You'll be battling the harsh Maine elements and trying to stay one step ahead of his enemy. Bowditch is his usual resourceful and determined self, but the stakes are high. He needs to quickly sort friend from foe, even when alliances shift on a dime.

If you're looking for a thrilling read that will keep you guessing until the very end, Pitch Dark is a must-grab. Doiron delivers another winner, and I can't wait to see what Bowditch gets up to next!

With his latest mystery/thriller, “Pitch Dark,” author Paul Doiron has given us a very absorbing, suspense-filled entertainment.

When Game Warden Investigator Mike Bowditch learns that a man has disappeared searching out a father and teenage daughter in Maine’s North Woods, he has three questions: Who is the man, who is he hunting, and why?

Turns out, the father, Mark Redmond, and his daughter, Cady, are custom-building a log cabin for an old, close friend of Mike’s family, bush pilot Josie Johnson. Josie agrees to fly Mike and his father-in-law, Charley Stevens, up to the site so that Mike can ask Redmond if he knows of the investigator, his whereabouts, or what might have happened to him.

Gathering around the cabin’s newly installed, state-of-the-art wood-fired cooking stove, the five chat pleasantly about the beauty of Redmond’s craftsmanship and the circumstances that might have led to the investigator’s disappearance, which is the last thing Mike remembers until waking up tied to a tree alongside a still-unconscious Charley and a convulsing Josie while Redmond and his daughter flee the scene—which is when Mike’s hunt for the Redmonds through the Maine and Canadian wilderness begins.

It's a hunt that’s filled with danger and suspense and more than a few reversals and surprises. Paul Doiron’s writing is straightforward and a pleasure to read. The pages fly by. Some of the plotting did strike me as a bit outlandish. But this is vastly outweighed by Mr. Doiron’s knowledge and descriptions of the various elements he includes in his story. Whether it be flying a bush plane; or building a log cabin with infinite precision; or manufacturing maple syrup; or law enforcement organizations and procedures; or North Woods flora and fauna, Doirons writes about it with specificity and authority.

My thanks to NetGalley, author Paul Doiron, and publisher St. Martin's Press | Minotaur Books for providing me with a complimentary ARC. The foregoing is my independent opinion.

4.5 Stars
I had no idea that there was a new Paul Doiron book coming out and was so excited to get to read and review this!

Mike Bowditch started his career as a Game Warden in Maine, but is now a Game Warden Investigator. As such he investigates crimes that involve fish, wildlife and game within the state, as well as assisting with search and rescue for those missing in the Maine wilderness. He receives a call about a man that may be missing for the past two days and is asked to come to northern Maine to determine if a search is warranted. He becomes suspicious of the man who is building a cabin for a friend, and begins asking questions. This leads Mike into a case of kidnapping, murder, and a wilderness chase that tests his physical and mental limits.

One of my favorite genres to read are murder mysteries set in the wilderness, with a main character that is a game warden, wildlife biologist, park ranger, etc. The Mike Bowditch series is an excellent example of these. Doiron is accomplished at bringing to life the setting of rural Maine and the turmoil of his characters. If you too enjoy a wilderness mystery, this is a series you should pick up!

Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author of the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Wow! What a ride! This is another fantastic addition to the Warden Mike Bowditch series. I couldn't wait as the story unfolded and Mike found himself in all sorts of dicey situations. The author is able to set the scene (and what a beautiful location!) and keep the reader interested as everything unfolds. The twists and turns with a bit of humor thrown in made this a super fun read. I look forward to the next installment and hope it's here soon. Many thanks to the Author, publisher, and NetGalley for allowing me to read this excellent story in exchange for my honest review. Don't miss this one!

An investigation into a possible missing person threatens to turn into an international incident when Warden Bowditch discovers that Mark Redmond and his daughter Cady are not who they seem to me. The father and daughter duo have some rather significant secrets. Mark (or rather, Paul) has planned for numerous contingencies and he has allies on both sides of the American-Canadian border. He is resourceful and ruthless, and despite the efforts he has taken to protect his daughter, he is willing to kill her rather than allow her to be taken into custody. Cady (or Chloe) is also more ruthless than expected. It will be a race to see who can get to the border first. Add in a Mormon bounty hunter to make the situation more complicated.

As always I love this one . I just love Mike and Charley and this one was no exception. The author drags you in and the plot keeps you engaged. This book shows the dangers of preppers and homeschoolers and how abuse is covered up in these cults .
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me review the book
